I've been lost in a sentence before. It is the strangest feeling

That sense of shame when you realise you started the sentence, confident in your ability to wing it, only to realise you just like the sound of your own voice.

I still bear the scars.

Agreed. It's one of the best lines in the show. There's so much of Michael's character in that short exchange with Holly.

This happened to me recently at my work's Christmas party. I was having a conversation with my boss, stepped outside with buddies for a "smoke", returned, started the conversation up again only to realize I had no fucking recollection of what we were just talking about. Awkward.

Well, I'd argue you had a fairly decent excuse for that.

But hows this for a TFW.

TFW you pop out of a crowded shin-dig for a "smoke" with your buddies. But when you return you just know you stink of it. You can practically see the cloud of green fugg surrounding you.

I did this at an Xmas part a few years back and I decided that the only way to not look guilty was to get ridiculously drunk. It worked.

Haha yeah. Fortunately my boss is pretty chill. I also proceeded to drink too much but I still felt like an asshat for that conversation.

If I ever start a sentence and get lost in it, I just kind of tell the other person.

"You know what? That sentence was bad. I'm just going to start a new one and hopefully it will be more comprehensible.

[–]Glathull [

I used to do that, and it's very effective.

What I started doing intentionally several years ago is just stopping and thinking about what I'm going to say. No "hmmm, errr, ummm" or anything. Just dead silence. Open your mouth like you're about to say something to signal that you are claiming an opportunity to speak, then close it again, let the silence hang, and collect your thoughts.

It's very effective. It gets people's attention and keeps it, while you out together a coherent thought.

It's actually pretty hard to do. We don't like silences and think they are awkward, so we try to fill them, and once that happens, people shut down. They don't want to hear the filler noises and tune out.

If you can discipline yourself into staying completely silent, you'll come out looking much better, and people will be primed to listen to what you say.

That usually happens to me shortly after my lecturers begin their sentences.

Okay, okay, uh huh, hmm, um, wait what?

I've always been impressed by his complete inability to explain ANYTHING in a coherent manner. He may be a smart dude for all I know, but every time he tries to explain something remotely complicated, even things he surely understands like real estate development, he never finishes the thought. People wonder why he never talks policy, and it's because he can't. Everything has to be quippy one-liners and catch phrases, and most of the time they don't make sense (see the "Nazi Germany" from yesterday).

People say a good public speaker =/= a good leader, but a good leader has to explain the direction he wants the followers to go. We have very little to go on from this man.

He fucking ended the press conference with "You're Fired" for Christs sake. Like it's just another episode of that shitty game show he hosted.

Right after he said that he was going to cut ties with his business. nothing screams ETHICS like threatening to fire people you're supposed to be no longer in charge of if they don't run the company you totally aren't tied to anymore if they don't run it the way you want.

[–]Isho 7

It doesn't even have to be anything remotely complicated, just ANYTHING in general. He definitely has an unorthodox manner of speaking. It annoys me when he leaves you with mini cliffhangers at every point he's talking about. For example:

Trump: You want to know how I managed to achieve x? Well it all started when I was doing the rally in y, by the way how about the people in y huh? Let's give it up for the great people of y, aren't they just great? funny story 1.5 years ago when they were all saying that I wouldn't win in y, the media and the, oh and what about the media huh? bla bla bla bla

Then he just keeps on going off tangent and somehow manages to work backwards like from the movie memento and answer each of his points/statements backwards. DRIVES ME NUTS

Even Bush Jr. was a far superior public speaker.

Let that sink in. The man routinely laughed at as a bumbling fool is better than Trump at these things.

Well, when your entire philosophy is that your blue collar common sense is better than the elite experts who've studied a subject for 20 years, then yeah... you're going to hold on to the notion that you're right for quite sometime before you give it up.

"now that there is a good public speaker."

I could see his supporters arguing that requiring effective public speaking skills is elitist and unnecessary for leadership.

Edit: never mind, they're already here in this thread saying that

He doesn't use a teleprompter (I think be cause he THINKS he's a great speaker). I do like to imagine that he is though and that word fucking salad shit he does is actually written down.

I mean, Presidents have speech writers, right? I can just imagine him yelling at them, "This is comprehensible, what are you doing?! If what I'm saying makes any sense, people may hold me to it!"

He's a very effective speaker. Meaning he is able to manipulate the dialogue such that he either looks good, or him and the others involved both look bad. In the latter case he can then shift the blame from himself and onto the other party.

If nothing else he's a master media manipulation. There hasn't been a single post (at least on my feed) about the tillerson approval hearings. Thats was the point of this press meeting, and it worked.

Thats was the point of this press meeting, and it worked.

I don't think it did. People keep acting like everyone would've just been clamoring to discuss Tillerson's hearing without the press conference when we all know that's not the case. People treat politics like they treat the news - they care when something exciting or controversial happens, but suddenly when it's time for the boring stuff like confirmation hearings, people tune out. The people who cared about Tillerson's hearing are the people who kept up with it in spite of the press conference. The people who didn't wouldn't have cared regardless of what else was going on.

Criticism of his picks were watered down when they attacked every single one. After listening to Sessions speak and doing research it might have been the most egregious attack by the media of one of his picks.

Yeah absolutely. Honest criticism is a valuable things, but vilification for the sack of political gain does more harm than good.

egregious attack by the media

i know! they're being so silly for suggesting that a racist who has a documented history of attempting to undermine the rights of other people and who for that reason was previously rejected (by republicans!) for a much lesser judicial post maybe shouldn't have the job that enforces and protects said rights.

I mean...he did speak very nice with good words, right? Because that's our standard? In 2017 we totally judge people not by their actions but on their ability to wear a tie and spout lip service?

Lemme guess...on stormfront?

There's just so much that's wrong with him. Believe it or not, we complain about all of it.

The media definitely is screwing up covering him when it comes to informing the public about him. Day after day it's a personal battle between left wrong media sources going after him over vague tweets, or spending an entire afternoon talking about how meryl streep isn't overrated. But they skim over actual important topics like Rex Tillersons hearing yesterday. Other than the hearing itself did you see much of anything of Tillerson fumbling over his views on Putin as a war criminal? I supported and voted for trump but the media gives Trump a pass when they attack him personally more than they attack his pilocies. I want trump to succeed as I think the entire country should but that can't happen if the important topics aren't discussed.

The thing is, they attack him personally because he's an awful person. But it's not like Trump supporters see that and go "Well yeah but I don't care", most of them just say "Nah none of that's true".

Which they would also do (and have done) when the media focuses on his political failings.

There's literally nothing they can say about him that isn't immediately handwaved away.

His effectiveness is entirely guided by the critical thinking skills of his audience. He'd crumble in a hard core debate, Hillary should have destroyed him but she just sat there and let him say stupid things thinking Americans would see through him. People just seem to let him away with saying meaningless BS.

He's an effective speaker in the same way that someone can be an effective hypnotist. If you're stupid or gullible enough for it to work on you, then yeah he's great at it. For everyone else, we're dumbfounded that he's not immediately thrown out.

Forget public, he's just not good at speaking. Regardless his mannerisms actually do a good job of planting images and narratives in people's minds about his achievement in business, his big league success in the polls, his big wall, his beautiful children. But wow does he never have any idea where he's going when he starts talking. The only time im ever impressed with what comes out of his mouth is when he zings someone. It doesn't seem like he should be capable of it.

Yet he's lauded by some for his conversational oratory style.

If I was ever having a one on one conversation with someone who danced around the topic as much as he does in his speeches, I'd probably try to excuse myself as quickly as possible.

I don't think even his supporters believe that he is a good public speaker. Obama is a million times more eloquent and diplomatic.

Trump got in power because of his other traits, such as his bluntness, his strong character but mainly due to his policies on economy and illegal immigration. It also helped him the other candidate (HRC) was horrible. The sooner people realise that Trump will always be Trump the sooner we can all move on.

TRUMP: So I tweeted out that I have no dealings with Russia. I have no deals that could happen in Russia, because we’ve stayed away. And I have no loans with Russia.

As a real estate developer, I have very, very little debt. I have assets that are — and now people have found out how big the company is, I have very little debt — I have very low debt. But I have no loans with Russia at all.

And I thought that was important to put out. I certified that. So I have no deals, I have no loans and I have no dealings. We could make deals in Russia very easily if we wanted to, I just don’t want to because I think that would be a conflict. So I have no loans, no dealings, and no current pending deals.

Now, I have to say one other thing. Over the weekend, I was offered $2 billion to do a deal in Dubai with a very, very, very amazing man, a great, great developer from the Middle East, Hussein Damack, a friend of mine, great guy. And I was offered $2 billion to do a deal in Dubai — a number of deals and I turned it down.

I didn’t have to turn it down, because as you know, I have a no-conflict situation because I’m president, which is — I didn’t know about that until about three months ago, but it’s a nice thing to have. But I don’t want to take advantage of something. I have something that others don’t have, Vice President Pence also has it. I don’t think he’ll need it, I have a feeling he’s not going to need it.

But I have a no conflict of interest provision as president. It was many, many years old, this is for presidents. Because they don’t want presidents getting — I understand they don’t want presidents getting tangled up in minutia; they want a president to run the country. So I could actually run my business, I could actually run my business and run government at the same time.

I don’t like the way that looks, but I would be able to do that if I wanted to. I would be the only one to be able to do that. You can’t do that in any other capacity. But as president, I could run the Trump organization, great, great company, and I could run the company — the country. I’d do a very good job, but I don’t want to do that.

Now, all of these papers that you see here — yes, go ahead.

Question: ...to get Mexico to pay for it?

and the without copying the entire response he goes on to describe how he doesn't want to wait for Mexico to pay it, so he's going to start building it now and have Mexico reimburse us. But, according to a big printed note put up by the homeowner association, they're extremely sensitive for over dosage of washing powder and we'll be held personally responsible if any of the shiny new and probably, very expensive machines malfunction. So now I'm afraid to get the dosage wrong and recently washed a bunch of underwear in my bahtroom sink instead...

The best example of him time wasting and bullshitting yesterday was when he was asked:

Do you trust your U.S. intelligence officials? And what do you say to foreign policy experts who say you're actually weakening national security by waging this war of words against that community?

Trump's "Answer":

Intelligence agencies are vital and very, very important. We are going to be putting in, as you know, Mr. Pompeo and others, you know the Senator Dan Coats. We're going to be putting in some outstanding people. Within 90 days, they're going to be coming back to me with a major report on hacking. I want them to cover this situation. I also want them, however, to cover, maybe most importantly -- because we're hacked by everybody -- you know, the United States, our government out of a list of 17 in terms of industries is the worst, it's number 17, in terms of protection.

If you look at the retail industry, if you look at the banking industry, various industries, out of 17 industries -- they put this in the category of an industry -- the United States is last in terms of protecting, let's say, hacking defense. Like we had a great hacking defense at the Republican National Committee. That's why we weren't hacked. By the way, we were told that they were trying to hack us, but they weren't able to hack. And I think I get some credit because I told Reince, and Reince did a phenomenal job, but I said I want strong hacking defense.

The Democratic National Committee didn't do that. Maybe that's why the country runs so badly that way. But I will tell you -- wait -- wait -- wait, let me finish. Within 90 days, we will be coming up with a major report on hacking defense, how do we stop this new phenomena -- fairly new phenomena because the United States is hacked by everybody. That includes Russia and China and everybody -- everybody. Ok

He took 5 minutes to say "I don't know, we will have a report on what we can do in 3 months".

This sounds exactly like Michael Scott rambling on sentences without knowing where he's going with it.

Honestly it's a bit insulting toward Michael Scott that you are comparing him to Mr. Orange Face in this way

There's actually some great parallels. Maybe in 4 years he can have his own Scott's Tots episode

Not enough usage of the word "very".

I very disappointed in the attempt to attack me in very bad way. Sad! I very much have a way to very much respond to this gif in a very very bigly manner. First I will repeal this gif in with very good one of mine. It will be a very great one. I tell you I have the very best gif ideas. People always come up to me a say very much that I have the very best gif ideas very much. I tell you that very much don't like this very weak gif. I will do something that is such very very very good.

The cringiest part for me is thinking about how hard Putin and his cronies must laugh when they watch the U.S. President-elect talk like this.

Michael Scott would have had a legitimate chance to win the 2016 presidential election.

I actually like it when Trump is mad and tweet angry tweet. It's like a popcorn time.

Hell I don't use twitter but I brush up on my old twitter account to try to antagonize him.

It's the only few good thing that came of 2016, one of the worst being him winning.

I seriously thought that during campaign Trump he was talking that way for his voter base. I think realize he really talks like that...

I thought Bush messing up on a few things such as "fool me once" quote was crazy but Trump oooh boy it's fun.

Like most other show offs, after all his antics to get everyone's attention, once he has it he realizes he actually has nothing to say. The attention is the point. People past the age of 10 have usually outgrown this behavior.

Your government is a joke and demonstrates how weak and vulnerable you are to foreign policy manipulation.

Your government does care about you. Trump doesn't care that he isn't accountable to your values, laws, or any such priorities. He only cares about his and his corporate and political friends and family - to the extent that they can make more money.

Your government is an embarrassment. Trump supporters demonstrate how stupid your population is.

I am glad to see that the next 4 years will dramatically weaken your country. You boast of being powerful. Do you feel like you are influencing policy? Are you really benefitting from this? Delusional. Wilfully blind. Perfect for being manipulated.

Continue to normalize and ignore the danger. :)
