This is really getting ridiculous. If I can't buy or sell during major price increase/drops, then what is the point of using them?

I would say it's a valid reason, knowing the trading system run 24/7 at some point you need to patch stuff. Regular fiat exchange have 16 hours everyday to do so.

What I don't like about Coinbase is that especially during price dips, their spread and fees are absolutely ridiculous. I can never get anywhere near market price. They've just been gouging me all the way up, and all the way down.

Yes you transfer coins from Coinbase wallet to GDAX from there you can achieve 0% fees if your order goes onto the book and not market. Market orders will still cost a fee but not as much as buying through Coinbase's front-end interface.

FYI, Gemini isn't avaliable worldwide right now. Just tried registering and it shut me down, sad to see it happen since I'm form the EU and most sites like these support our coutries. It's not like I'm trying to register from the middle east.

You can't compare Coinbase to Gemini. They're 2 different species. Coinbase is an exchange meant for consumers to buy bitcoin for retail purposes, whereas Gemini is more geared towards investment type people. If you want a true comparison, compare GDAX (Coinbase's Equivalent) and Gemini. They have relatively similar fees.

If you have more bitcoins, conduct your trade on another exchange -- just to lock in the exchange rate, then later to a flip sale that essentially moves those USDs over to Coinbase.

e.g., even though I don't use BTC-e for withdrawals, I can send some BTC there, sell it, then tomorrow when Coinbase has fewer issues related to scaling, buy back on BTC-e and at that moment sell on Coinbase.

Boom. You've locked in at today's rate but still used Coinbase for withdrawing USDs (but just waited a day extra to do that step).

Seriously though, check out the daily chart over two years. We are honestly right on the "steady growth" path. There will be runups and pull backs, but they are difficult to time, so just simple weekly buys is still the best strategy.

If you time the drops perfectly, you can definitely increase your holdings. But we are still up 80% in a year ahs 200% in two.

If 700 hundred is the new bottom though, I'm pretty stoked. Truthfully, I don't quite remember the jump from high 400s to 700, that one happened fast too.

Not really, it ran up $400 in a few weeks. It's still extremely volatile, which is great for people who like to trade it. But Once it starts to move slow 'n steady is when it will likely see more stability. Going from $700 to almost $1,200 in a few weeks is bound to retreat and retrench. This behaviour does not surprise me in the least, and is, in fact, a great opportunity, IMHO. I hope it keeps doing this for a few more years at least before it gets more stable, it's so easy to make scads of money.
