Neither side tells the whole truth. The difference lies in the direction they take. Society seeks to 'feel good' at the cost of avoiding having to face one's own culpability. Men going the own way, ideally, seek truth and personal accountability at the cost of the instant gratification of 'feeling good'.

Confronting reality and accepting truth, has much greater long term gain both mentally, spiritually and physically, even though it may sting in the short term. Society prefers delusions, but they all share it together and often you will see them benefit each other and attack, overtly or covertly, those that seek and stand for truth.

If you understand the game, you can seek truth internally and play there social game of delusion to stay under the radar. It takes a lot of energy and is frustrating at times.

As Stardusk once said, "The lie for the sake of happiness is just that. It is no true happiness because it is predicated on deception, and more importantly self deception." He goes on to say, "Men do it, women do it, all human beings do it. They to it to be successful, they do it to garner success, they do it in their social relations, familial relations, they cannot simply accept things as they are."
