You should contact the police with the harrassment the father is giving you, You should contact the store about them giving away your personal infomation, If they aren't responsive go further up in the chain about it. Give the law firm a copy of the letter they'll be quite interested if someone is using their name for legal letters if they aren't authorized.

This is one of the craziest things I've come across...just...wow. And seriously awesome thing you did for that kid.

The kid's dad is acting like you walked into their home and stole the game. Then deleted the content maliciously. And suggesting they only went on these trips to these events for that specific game?

Then why the hell did they decide to sell it? I mean really now.

Honestly if I was you, I would be pissed off/bothered enough to do two things.

  1. I would file a complaint with the game store, above the head of the franchise owner. It seems unusual enough the store even contacted you after buying it, weirder still they put the kid on the phone with you. I mean, I feel for that kid and you were cool about it. But you had every right to keep that game and who could say no to the kid? Going even further out of line, they gave your contact details to the family. Just...no.

  2. I would go in to meet with the law firm with a copy of the letter, and tell them that you would like to help them out if they wanted to do something about it but that you can't give them the original in case you receive further harassment. It would be pretty damn awesome if the law firm in question sent that guy a letter themselves threatening a lawsuit for harassment. Even better if they told you that they would take up any possible future case against this guy pro bono

Just a few days ago we had someone sell a laptop and not realize that he sold his private data, which OP promptly erased prior to a reinstall, and seller wanted it all back and was threatening to sue. That was in Australia as well. Has something gone on over there?

The initial fact pattern (for the handling of data, not for the intermediate store) is nearly identical. Although this one is going over the top with forging a law firm letter.

OP, check out this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/legaladvice/comments/5md99d/australia_i_bought_a_second_hand_laptop_on/

The initial fact pattern (for the handling of data, not for the intermediate store) is nearly identical.

For weeks now, we've been getting copycat posts. Popular, unique, questions that don't need a lot of input from the poster tend to get repeated two or three times.

I don't know if it's people in similar, but slightly different situations who realize they can ask their question here, or if it's some kind of karma-farming thing.

IANAL and doesn't really answer your question, but it sounds possible that this is a planned scam, complete with distraught little boy up to names of big scary lawyer(s). If that is the case, the game clerk could possibly have knowledge of it.

This idea violates Heinlein's Razor, but what with a similar thing happening in Australia just the other day, makes you wonder if this kind of thing is a new con favorite over there.

Giving the law firm the forged document will probably be the quickest way to get this loony off your back. They won't hesitate to investigate and will likely scare the crap out of the guy when they start talking about fraud charges. They might also be willing to do you a favour by threatening legitimate penalties if he doesn't leave you alone..

That said, I'd also contact your local police liaison and report the guys behaviour if he contacts you again.

Except I would give them the copy and retain the original. Maybe bring the original to show its real, but doubt they really need the original. They probably just want to know the exact content of the letter so they know whom to sue for pretending to be a lawyer.

Statistics indicate that animal lovers in recent years have shown a preference for cats over dogs!

Eh bring in the original, and request they make the certified copies. All law firms will have the ability to do this.

maybe try r/AusLegal

But I don't know what it is about Australians and their lack of basic understanding how technology works but we had a similar post a couple of days ago but that was about a sold laptop.

Thanks for the tip, I've cross-posted over there.

And tell me about it; I work in tech support. Explaining data loss and how back ups can't be made after the fact makes up a much larger fraction of my job than I had thought it would.

We're a few years behind the rest of the world

Which is weird. Because you're ahead of the rest of the world.

You can give them the letter he sent.

Otherwise ignore the guy.

I want to help the firm, but I don't feel like it's a good idea to hand over the proof that he did this and I'm not sure if I'm allowed to give them his phone number etc.

You're allowed. Unless you signed something saying you wouldn't or there was reasonable expectation you wouldn't, which there definitely isn't.

Oh this is beautiful..

Copy the letter, give the original to the law firm, ask them to sign your copy with "I certify this to be a true copy of a letter handed to me by <your name> , 10 Jan 2017", with their name, just in case.

You cant get sued and lose. Trust me. The shop shouldnt have given your private info either. Take the texts to the police. Give the email to the lawyer. Sit back and watch it unfold.

You cant get sued and lose

Unless you get served and ignore it OP. There's always the odd post on here by seemingly intelligent people who are surprised they lose by default when they don't show up.

[–]pottersquashQuality Contributor 2 ポイント3 ポイント  (0子コメント)

You can just give them a copy of the letter they don't need the original. Go to the police about the harassment.

I'm not a lawyer but I sure as hell hope this gets an update. Seems like something out of r/writingprompts

Has anyone ever been successfully sued based on the loss of virtual goods in a video game? I bet griefing noobs would make a good precedent. We need a test case for this.
