I think you hit the nail on the head. I've noticed the trends mainly in girls who are into yaoi or slash (the former over the latter).

Some background; I've been into anime fandoms for a long time, and consumed my fair share of m/m. I understand the appeal of a lot of it, and it's deeper than just straight girls thinking gay sex is hot. A lot of the arguments I've read and agreed with about why this category is so popular is because of the equality aspect and the erasure of the female sex role. Sure, people argue all the time that the "submissive" part of m/m pairings is the representative of a woman, but in my experience this is a vast generalization. And even if a male character acts in more stereotypical feminine ways, there's never any confusion about his sex.

Compared to most m/f pairings, where the imbalance is always more extreme and stereotypical, m/m pairs certainly have an appeal to young teenage girls who would rather be treated as an equal, and who do not want to be forced to be a certain way because of their sex. In recent years (and even recent months) the amount of "transboys" in fanfiction has increased significantly too, making straight sex (though labelled as gay) all the more popular. So I don't think it's strictly about finding gay men "hot" in general, but more about that longing to be in an equal relationship where you aren't treated as a "woman".

All of this is very sad of course, and not a solution to the real problem; i.e. the gender hierarchy. I obviously don't condone straight and bi women who call themselves gay forcing their way into gay male spaces and conversations, or using their terminology, but I have a great deal more sympathy for them than I do their male counterparts because of this perspective.

I agree with this.

I'll also add that a lot of girls/women might desire men in a way that's not allowed for within the typical framework of heterosexuality - that is, they wish to be the active partner, to do things to the man instead of being done things to. Paired with finding m/m hot (which is also something that many people think women can't possibly do), it's not hard to see how they might conclude they can't possibly be straight women, since their sexuality is so much "like a man's".

Yeah, if you look at fanart and stuff about how these girls and women draw men (in ways women would often be drawn by straight men) it's very different from how media usually portrays women's sexuality. They don't want to be the sex object they see on TV. (Though I am also hm, concerned with the opposite objectification of men, since it's such a mimicry of how women have been objectified, instead of a unique expression of sexuality. It's still shaped within a patriarchy, and focused on the Penis).

Yes, it's copying/borrowing the male gaze, only focussing on a male object instead of a female one. The "doer" is still a man...

I don't think I've ever met a trans man who dated men. All of the ones I have met are in relationships with women. I don't know if that's their preference though? I have not yet met any male friends (straight or gay) who say they would date trans men, though I'm sure some are out there.

I once thought I met one but the boyfriend was FtT as well.

Yeah, her ex bf once mentioned to me that my friend was actually a boy and he was actually a girl, but neither made any effort to transition. I wasn't GC back then so I didn't call them on it.

I'm an autistic woman in fandom, and I'm seeing a lot of this - other isolated, probably on the spectrum straight women transitioning for similar reasons to AG men. You can read quite a bit about it on 4th Wave Now.

Autism should be a contraindication to transitioning period. It's not a shock that folks like us who are poor at reading social cues will take up a fairytale of why they don't understand the social construct of "gender".

Dunno about other places, but there's a ton of FtT yaoi/slash fangirls in Russian-speaking fandom (not only anime fandom, but mostly there). Most of them only pretend to be gay men on the Internet, but some of them try to play the part IRL as well. We even have an underground FtT "gay" singer like this, Michael Draw (Marina Sergeyeva). Oh, and the Tolkien fandom in Russia/former USSR is especially infamous for producing FtTs, who usually claim to be some male elvish character in past life. Not sure about the sexuality makeup there, but fairly sure not all of them are lesbians.

English-speaking Lord of the Rings fandom had an infamous FtT, Amy Player/Victoria Bitter/Jordan Wood/Andy Blake. She later moved on to other fandoms and wreaked havoc there.

Oooh I remember that person. She was channeling Merry's spirit!

Wasn't it Frodo himself? Lol.

Seriously, the appeal she had on others seemed similar to that of a cult leader. :/

I think this is definitely happening more. In young liberal circles, inclusive feminism and QT acceptance means that straight women have to accept BDSM, porn use and porn influenced fantasy acting out as being normal. Chad Evans is a hero to many young men, who have had porn available on their phone throughout their puberty. Radical Feminism is taboo so there is no representation of healthy equitable sexual relationships and no one saying young women do not have to put up with this crap.

For young straight women who are repulsed by this, one way out is to become a gay transman. You either get to get together with other trans men but without being hated as and evil TERF lesbian.

Or you get to hang out with gay young men. Some of whom may actually be straight but unable to see them selves playing the role of a mechanised penis with a power crazed head that is all they see in their world. Such young men may think they are straight, but young hormones being what they are may discover that given time and the company of an agreeable friend, protected from the pornified expectations of mainstream society, they actually sex is not just what happens on the internet.

If straight cis sex is 50 Shades, its a way out.
