Hello comrades! As a friendly reminder, this subreddit is a space for socialists only. • This subreddit is not for questioning the basics of socialism. There are numerous subreddits available for those who wish to debate or learn more about socialism

  • Users are expected to at least read the discussion in a given thread before replying to it. Obviously obtuse or asinine questions will be assumed to be trolling and will be removed and can result in a ban.

Honestly, this who thing about the mean of production being controlled by the government is really starting to drive me up a wall. And out of curiosity, who made this and what country is it coming from?

my american textbook (high school world history) says that socialism is complete state control of everything (market, governmental functions, etc).

in 9th grade civics class, the teacher did a fucking demonstration on how if you lived under communism people are all paid the same no matter how hard they work so if you go to the grocery store there will only be rolls of paper towels and no food

i'm not shitting you lol

Does your teacher feel well? Most anti-comm's ALWAYS mention the lack of toilet paper

any textbook in any class (I'm sure the rare exception exists) is just going to be bourgeois "science" - ideology devoted to the justification of the status quo

are we still surprised? any analysis from the perspective of the proletariat (say, marxism) will be necessarily revolutionary, so these textbooks will stay as far away from an analysis of production or the class system as possible

UUUGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHh

Please speak up about this in class if the topic comes up. Uninformed definitions of socialism/communism/anarchism being taught to students is a massive hindrance to the movement.

like, no shit, half of our entire purpose today should be working to dispel the legacy of Stalinism and the influence of bourgeois ideology - schools and universities being a major source of that ideology

Why does your flair say you sound like a leftcom? Most of the leftcoms I've spoken to have been resistant or even taken offense to the idea people must be taught about socialism.

I just often criticise a lot of the garbage espoused by the (internet-based) left, and think that the majority of the left today needs to reorient (for the record, not on the basis of my own intellectual masturbation or something, but on the basis of the experience with my organisation which has a line that is different to most of the left)

I DON'T think people must be taught about socialism, as though we're prophets to the huddled masses - the role of the socialist organisation is not to "build class consciousness" as some like to say, that doesn't make sense - the natural struggle builds class consciousness - the working class will likely not even turn to socialism until the revolution is in full swing - worker's democracy has in every case evolved naturally - the role of the socialist org is to, as a party composed of the working class and intellectuals with a working class orientation, lead the struggle when the social democrats and reformists fail to provide answers to the questions that arise in the course of things

The internet based left is a horrible mess. Internet leftists have probably weakened my faith in the left more than any argument presented from the right.

the majority of the left today needs to reorient

How so?

I DON'T think people must be taught about socialism, as though we're prophets to the huddled masses

I don't see myself as some kind of enlightened prophet of anarchy lol. I simply think I've come across a very good and very important idea that I want more people to know about.

You're lucky. The definition of socialism in MY high school textbooks were even WORSE!
