Welcome to /r/ModWatchdog. Have you ever wondered about who keeps an eye on the moderators? It is a moderator's job to make sure that users behave properly on a certain subreddit, but whose job is it to make sure that moderators behave properly?
The role of this subreddit:
That's where this sub comes in. All too often there have been cases of moderators 1) abusing their power, 2) behaving inappropriately, 3) being generally unpleasant, but no one has ever thought or cared to monitor and deal with such behaviour.
Why? That's because no one is obligated to do so, not even the reddit admins. Reddit admins typically only intervene if there is a very severe crisis at stake, e.g. major moderator misconduct on a major subreddit (e.g. /r/funny).
Unfortunately, this leaves out many more subtle incidents of moderator misconduct -- these types of cases often just get swept under the rug, and moderators get away scot-free. We don't think that this is fair to the users of reddit, and believe that moderators should be held more accountable for their actions.
Hopefully, one day this subreddit will grow into a comprehensive database of such offenders, and will serve as a resource for "employers" (subreddit owners) to check up on a potential employee's (moderator) history.
In an attempt to ameliorate this problem, we have created a scale that classifies moderator misconduct on a scale of urgency, from Very low, to Very high.
Levels of urgency:
Very low: Cases of general moderator unpleasantness and/or the display of toxic or grandiose behaviour.
Low: Inconsistent, isolated cases of misconduct in the subreddit in question.
Medium: Consistent, multiple cases of misconduct in the subreddit in question.
High: Consistent, multiple cases of misconduct in the subreddit in question, and multiple cases of misconduct in other subreddits (irrespective of moderator status).
Very high: Consistent, multiple cases of misconduct in the subreddit in question, multiple cases of misconduct in other subreddits (irrespective of moderator status), and numerous user reports documenting consistent misconduct and clear inability to hold moderator status.
Note that this sub deals with major subreddits, as opposed to small subreddits with only a few users.
Our aim is to impose damage control on unruly moderators, but small subs (e.g. less than 2 moderators) are typically not largely affected by misconduct due to their small user base.
Rules:
There are really only two rules that you should abide by:
Do not post a report without adequate evidence to substantiate your claims. This is not a place to be posting defamation for fun. Repeat offenses will result in 1 warning, then a ban.
Do not come here just to insult moderators you don't like. This is not an anti-moderator sub -- our goal is to hold moderators more accountable for their actions.
Other rules include being polite to your fellow redditors, and maintaining general etiquette. We felt that it was unnecessary to emphasise this, as we believe that redditors should always act in such a manner, be it online or offline.
Also, for anyone who wants to make a thread about the subreddit itself, please include (META) in your post title.
