Nélson Semedo would be my first option in the summer, not for backup, but to replace Valencia. Defensively he has room to grow but offensively he is amazing. I like Valencia but his offensive contribution to the team is grossly exaggerated, especially when you look at right backs like Walker and Bellerin in the league.

João Cancelo would be a hell no from me though. Offensively he is also pretty great but defensively he is terrible. Not like Nélson Semedo, who is good defensively but with potential to improve, Cancelo is just terrible defensively to begin with.

Oh wow, really? I'll admit that I have not seen any of them play. But I thought Cancelo was linked with a 30 mil Euro move to Barca in the summer, so I thought he'd be good enough for us.

And I also didn't know Semedo is good enough to replace Valencia. I mean, our Tony V's crossing is very hit or miss, but he has massively improved defensively, and that combined with his strength and pace, he's easily able to boss the whole right flank without much help from the right winger.

André Gomes and Paco Alcacer also joined Barcelona from Valencia, both very highly rated at the time, and both have been complete shit. Cancelo's alternated between RB and RW during his time at Valencia precisely to put less defensive pressure on him because he's so good going forward but very, very poor defensively.

Watching both Nélson Semedo and Valencia every week, I think Valencia is better defensively than Nélson Semedo. Nélson still has some strange decisions in him when the team is defending, especially in positioning, whereas Valencia has really improved in that regard over the years, and, like you said, Valencia being physically stronger and his use of that physical strength helps. Offensively, however, Nélson Semedo takes the cake. His crossing is better, his dribbling is better, gets past players more easily. It's this type of attacking potential of his that allows Benfica's right wingers, Salvio and sometimes Rafa, to drift into the middle and make runs to open the opposition defense up, these players know they can count on Nélson's offensive capabilities on that right side when drift to the center. In our case, players like Mkhitaryan, Mata, and Lingard also perform those runs and drift into the center, but I don't trust Valencia on his own offensively anymore. In those situations, I think Semedo would be a big, big improvement on the team's offensive potential.

Wow, thanks for your detailed input :)

Our signings in the summer under Jose have been brilliant, so I'm sure he'll find the right one!

How on earth is Valencia offensive contribution exaggerated?

Valencia has created more chances than Bellerin and has more successful take ones than Walker in less matches.

The only reason we need a replacement for Valencia is because he´s aging, he´s one of the best offensive right back in the league.

Semedo looks unbelievably good going forward from what I've seen, reminds me of a younger Dani Alves. Imagine he'd cost an absolute fortune but I reckon he'd be worth it given the lack of quality right backs in football compared to other in positions

Thoughts on Fabinho from Monaco? I haven't seen that much of him but he appears to be good with the potential to get better.

It seems like this season he has been playing as DM and not RB.

Varela looked solid when he played last season. He has got that flair of a winger but was also defensively sound. The question is is he a Mourinho player?

I'm gutted about his long term injury though

but was also defensively sound.

I personally don't think he was. He was great going forward but had lapses in concentration when defending. Coutinho's goal against us in Europa League is a testament to his relatively poor defending.

Yh. He did have some lapses of concentration but that's what Mourinho is there to sort him out. Everyone is talking about Semedo not being the best defensively but has the potential to improve. Likewise Varela is not the best defensively but he can improve, especially under a manager like Jose.

Man, come on, we're looking to build a team to win the champions league (ultinately). Varela isn't of requisite quality.

I think Darmian can be excellent. I don't think we need anyone. TFM and Axel Tuanzebe can step up.

Axel is a CB, even if he can do a job at RB, I'd definitely prefer someone with flair and pace. TFM was solid at RB last year, but he still needs time to develop.

Djibril Sidibe I would take over the mentioned three he's great at going forward and defending can play both sides plus hes built like a ford bronco
