[Discussion] Potential backup signing for Antonio Valencia at RB. (self.reddevils)

Hi all,

We've recently been linked with Nelson Semedo as a backup for Valencia. I'm sure we can all agree that Darmian has been okay, but he's not particularly great in either attack or defence.

So, what are some realistic options for signing a RB for the future and who can also rotate with Valencia if the fixture schedule is too congested?

Potential options:

  1. Nelson Semedo, 22 years old, Benfica

  2. Ricardo Pereira, 22 years old, Nice

  3. Joao Cancelo, 22 years old, Valencia (linked with Barcelona).

Any other realistic options out there?

Semedo looks unbelievably good going forward from what I've seen, reminds me of a younger Dani Alves. Imagine he'd cost an absolute fortune but I reckon he'd be worth it given the lack of quality right backs in football compared to other in positions

Nélson Semedo would be my first option in the summer, not for backup, but to replace Valencia. Defensively he has room to grow but offensively he is amazing. I like Valencia but his offensive contribution to the team is grossly exaggerated, especially when you look at right backs like Walker and Bellerin in the league.

João Cancelo would be a hell no from me though. Offensively he is also pretty great but defensively he is terrible. Not like Nélson Semedo, who is good defensively but with potential to improve, Cancelo is just terrible defensively to begin with.

Oh wow, really? I'll admit that I have not seen any of them play. But I thought Cancelo was linked with a 30 mil Euro move to Barca in the summer, so I thought he'd be good enough for us.

And I also didn't know Semedo is good enough to replace Valencia. I mean, our Tony V's crossing is very hit or miss, but he has massively improved defensively, and that combined with his strength and pace, he's easily able to boss the whole right flank without much help from the right winger.
