I agree 100% with this. Democrats do stand to gain a lot from an unpopular president at the top.

He is either sympathethic or indifferent to their goals, and will just keep signing whatever they hand him. He's somewhere between accomplice and useful idiot to them.

I'm not really convinced of this. Sure, as long as Trump plays along, the Republicans don't give a shit what he says, but he's one perceived insult away from turning on the party and refusing to do anything to help them. Add to that the fact that Pence seems very much more like a party man, and that could be the impetus for an impeachment. Heck, if Trump is unpopular enough, the Republicans will claim credit for it all and reset the clock on their policies being judged.

They know that they just have to act nice to him in private and all will be fine. They're just going to fawn him to get whatever they want. They may ruin the country, but politically most of them were pretty smart to get where they are now. This is why they can still get ~45% of the vote and win elections.

Of course they're going to try to act nice, but it doesn't take much to set Trump off. It doesn't even have to be an actual insult, just saying something he doesn't like. Are they really going to be 100% successful in avoiding the minefield that is Donald Trump's feelings? I'd be willing to bet the answer is 'no.' The only question is: how quickly and effectively can they stop his temper tantrums?

The implication is he won't get worse. I disagree. He will likely see everything so far as vindication and continue getting worse. Meanwhile, as long as he has the authority to launch even one nuclear warhead, his ill temper makes him an potentially and/or likely existential threat.
