Manchester United vs Liverpool Discussion Thread (self.reddevils)

Although we play Hull in the League Cup midweek, our next Premier League game against Liverpool is coming into sharp focus. It is a massive game for several reasons: (1) United could overtake Arsenal in the table if we beat Liverpool and the Gunners slip up, (2) a win would dent Liverpool dreams of catching Chelsea, (3) our League winning streak would continue, (4) the team's confidence would be sky-high, (5) a win over Liverpool will make the rest of the front-runners sit up and take note, (6) victory over Klopp would give Mourinho endless satisfaction, (7) we get to enjoy Scouse salt for a few weeks and to troll our Liverpool-supporter friends and family.

I would like if we could discuss some of the following:

  • Possible starting 11 that José could select
  • How well our formation will work against Liverpool
  • Possible tactics that José could use (high press, counter attacks, possession, defensive etc)
  • Important one-on-one battles that we should look out for
  • Realistic score predictions
  • Plan B (should Liverpool score early and we struggle to score)

I hope Rojo is match fit. If he's not available we should play Jones and Smalling CB, Blind at LB and obviously Valencia starts at RB.

Midfield three should be the same as well. It's key that we prevent ourselves feeling too much of their press. I think we should play Herrera slightly deeper in this one to help Carrick out a bit more.

Front three, Ibra obviously picks himself as does Mkhi. I wouldn't mind benching Martial despite his amazing form for Lingard cause we'll need the extra work rate. It would also give us a good option to come off the bench and run at their defence once they get tired towards the end although Rashford can do this too.

I would pick Blind if Shaw doesn't get a game against Hull. Mkhi on the right, Ibra in the middle, Herrera, Carrick, Pogba and a 4-3-3 ofc.

The hot debate (and please do debate it instead of just hitting the downvote button) is the left wing and I would actually pick Rooney for the simple fact that his link up play and off the ball movement is much more mature than either Martial's or Rashford's and gives Ibra and Mkhi more options and high quality chances with than without him. And those two are the ones that should be getting the chances. If the kids passed the ball quicker and earlier and slotted into Ibra's nine spot when required it would be a different story, but as of now Wayne simply adds more in terms of team play to the forward line and I strongly suspect the kids will be dribbling until they run out of options against a top side because their game really hasn't changed all that much, only the quality of opposition; and Liverpool isn't going to allow them to run past them willy nilly without a shoulder tackle or a firm shirt tug. Rashford will run the ball out of play. And Martial will run into defenders. Until they start making it easier for themselves that's just the way it is.
