Is this trend of turning "women" into an adjective recent? Describing them as "female" is just too offensive?

*sigh*

Pretty retarded considering "female" is not linked etymologically to "male" but "woman" is to "man" but what do I know. Just inadvertently revealing their inane process of taking offense.
