This is one of my favorite kinds of drama. I think we are seeing the death of a subreddit and the emergence of its replacement. What a time to eat popcorn.

i dont know what worse a mod killing a sub with too many rules and regulations that they interpret however they wish. or a top mod just killing a sub because he just isnt "feeling" it any more against the entire subs wishes

and due to reddits top down dictator style mod systems these 2 scenarios are pretty much how all subs on reddit eventually die right now

I think a diagram showing the lifecycle of a subreddit would be pretty hilarious. Especially since so many end in catastrophic drama like you said.

How does this stuff go down with the people? Like, would he be able to walk the streets? If someone in the UK tried to pull that with a major team - Wimbledon STFU - there would be riots! And tbf the Wimbledon move was not popular by any stretch.

Sports teams in the US aren't nearly as entrenched in their cities as soccer teams in the UK. The owners of sports franchises in the US generally have the main goal of making money, and if a team is bad for a long time, has low attendance for games, and there is another city willing to pay for a stadium, owners will consider moving the their teams. It also helps that there are several major cities that don't have NFL,NBA, and/or MLB teams, whereas from what I understand, pretty much every city in the UK has a soccer team.

[–]komnenosYOUR FLAIR TEXT HERE

Didn't he PROMISE though to keep the Sonics in Seattle? If memory serves there were several other local big wigs who were more then happy to buy the Sonics but this guy insisted and then when he got the team made an effort to get them to Oklahoma.

So I just noticed that they've got a side subreddit called /r/SeattleTransparency/; it seems to be an attempt to document posts that gets removed from the subreddit, etc.

Of course, shockingly it doesn't for some reason list the "Can we discuss Rule 7? " post that was just removed. Instead, it looks like it's an attempt by the mods to highlight all the "good" removals they make, while ignoring any of the other removals that are made which might make them look bad. Which is, of course, the exact opposite of transparency. Nice job hypocrites.

Hehe or internet forums in general. There is certainly a long history and strong tendency of many many people to decide to go completely mad with their own extremely moderate and largely inconsequential amounts of power and take it as seriously as if they had suddenly become tin-pot dictators of their own little republics. "There will be no discussion of subreddits outside of /r/seattle! To suggest otherwise is capital treason!"

Saddam Hussein has nothing on forum mods.

Compared to the power struggles on traditional forums, power-hungry mods on Reddit are exceedingly rare. Could be because moderators only have limited tools and don't really 'own' subs, tho.

[–]AntiLukeAsk me why I hate Californians 13

Also helps that the line between mod and admin is so blatant on reddit compared to a lot of more traditional forums.

Definitely. And subreddits are usually just for content-sharing rather than community-oriented, so there's not much room for mod intervention beyond approving and removing posts. The results are incredible when the conditions are right for power trips, though. The Neopets mod drama is probably some of the best ever on reddit.

Is this sarcastic? A lot of people who have trouble making friends in real life or accomplishing anything of significance flock to modding reddit. It's the closest thing they'll ever have to acceptance and they aren't quick to give that up. I've heard that some 'creeps' even use their positions to try to get laid.

/r/Seattle is such a shitshow. Reddit really needs to provide mechanisms that facilitate breakaway communities. But since they don't, /r/SeattleWA should just start DMing /r/Seattle users with an advertisement for their sub.

[–]dorkettusHave you seen my Wikipedia page?

That might actually be against reddit rules. I wish I could remember clearly, but I can't, so people, feel free to correct me if you need to. There was a guy at one point that I believe was DMing pretty much everyone with an advertisement for his subreddit. He was shadowbanned, came back, did it again, and was shadowbanned again.

Again, I may be wrong. I really wish they had a way to let people know that a city-specific subreddit doesn't have to be like that.

[–]CountOneInterruptReclaiming "man purse" 34

If it's not against Reddit rules, it's still pretty obnoxious. I posted a few times on /r/Bitcoin, and some guy from /r/Ethereum (made to promote a different shitty cryptocurrency) mass-DMed /r/Bitcoin posters to promote Ethereum. I think it just made lots of people hate him.

Mass messaging people an advertisement for a subreddit would fall under the "no spamming" rule, which is literally the only way to get shadowbanned anymore. So I wouldn't do that.

Reddit really needs to provide mechanisms that facilitate breakaway communities

I had an idea about this once. My idea hinged on giving a subreddit's moderators two options (to be selected in a subreddit's settings).

Either:

  • Adopt some newly defined "democratic" moderator selection system

OR

  • Show a non-overridable* "related subreddits" section on the website's sidebar, above the sidebar section, which would list several active subreddits that are similar to the current one.

* Punishment like quarantining/deletion available to admins if a subreddit doesn't comply.

Digital democratic voting systems frequently fail in studies and in the real world , but I'd expect reddit probably has a lot of data about it and could say more. It is the reason why election ballots are still so widely on paper and why the nation cries foul when corporate control dominates an election system and even gets caught taking what appears to be a bribe to rig machines in a presidential election. I suspect what would happen to reddit sidebars would be much like what happens when 4chan dominates online polls and names boats weird things or attempts to make cockmongler a household name. There is enough banal Trump rhetoric everywhere already.

The freeform sidebar and wiki are ideal because ithey allow the community to tailor the content under a set of lenient rules that only ban bullying, stalking and hate speech and profiteering, etc. It's no more lenient or strict than Wikipedia's rules for editing content,

[–]komnenosYOUR FLAIR TEXT HERE

God, we blamed everything on Californians growing up. I remember when the LA street gangs were going to move to Seattle and steal the children. And then I moved to California. When I first drove home with California plates on my car I promptly got a ticket after getting back to Washington.

I've got a couple friends that moved up to Washington and Oregon. The guy who moved to Oregon said he had more tickets in one month of having CA plates there than in the 10 or so years of driving down here. I don't know what's in the water up there, or maybe that's just what it's like having water.

Please bring water next time you go up there.

[–]AntiLukeAsk me why I hate Californians 9

It's not the what's in the water (though the answer to that question is lead) it's our education system.

Your education system? What does it say that makes Californians so despised? I've heard of Californians being blamed for increased housing prices but I didn't know that was an actual educational policy rather than just simply foisting the blame on someone.

Sorry, heavily edited incoming wall of text. /u/AntiLuke was vaguely referring to the current circumstance of lead detected in the drinking fountains in Portland's schools. Also, you sounded concerned enough and maybe hinted at some sort of Oregon/California rivalry, I figured someone owed you a thorough explanation. Tl;dr: I think that there is a mild Calirfornia hate campaign that is probably part of an unorganized and unplanned community-driven awareness campaign that Portlanders stage online and elsewhere to try to displace some the current housing burden in Portland. It's mostly sharing.articles and statistics, but I guess some people might be taking it to personally, although I don't notice it often. I find it's usually someone venting and misplacing their stress with a little humor through satirical cynicism, maybe with a hint of slight and actual disdain, but in reality a lot of us are Californian and we speak to each other like normal, decent people. Don't let the Portland internet trolls discourage you. There's a colorful(less?) history of Oregon shunning incoming residents dating back to a famous quote of governer Tom McCall, circa 1970-something, something like "you can visit, but don't move here." It's really not supposed to be mean, our entire state is historically depressed economically and has always been very slow to accommodate growth, the side effects of which hit us harder in Portland than the more robust local economies of cities like Seattle, SF or Vancouver.

You're hilarious about the water. I know it's a dismal situation, in sincerity, but I'm humorously imaging a scenario where you PM me your address and I'll drop by a few jugs to your post-apocalyptic survivor camp and even though there's now more saltwater than ever lining the entire length of your entire coastline, there's none to drink and your camp will ultimately suffer the fate of the future California island/peninsula and float away out to sea.

I take it your friend probably bad a bad luck of the draw with the tickets. Never heard anything like that about the cops here. If he could show how he was targeted or upload some videos, we would have activists up in arms about it and rightly so. We have a huge protest community here. We don't hate Californians, we just hate the environmental and housing situations and I know it's mutual for you guys. In candid daily conversations people here talk about just the facts when it comes to the issues that plague not just our underside neighbors down south, but the southernmost parts of our own state as well. It's very easy to point fingers and it often sounds like we're generalizing when we say "Californians do this", and I occasionally hear some old fart sounding snide about it, but it's never anyone I like or find very likable.

But yeah, I'm a native here and it has gotten pretty weird. I had a conversation with a rich transplant couple at the park the other day who just sold a bunch of property around Yosemite. The guy was a 70-or-so Vietnam veteran, raving about chemtrails and FEMA camps, but he was surprisingly not politically conservative on environmental issues, which was pretty much all we discussed. I know his lunacy doesn't reflect on Californians in general, but I know his stern views on environmentalism are a very common view for Californians in general and rightly so.

What really struck me as most weird was his blond trophy wife who backed up his wildest conspiracy theories and whose face was all screwed up with Botox and the areas of taught skin that appears after face lifts. I've been noticing so many bad facial surgeries, seemingly correlating to all the transplant movement we've seen over the last few years. I always feel sorry for whatever self-image dysmorphia they suffer, but it saddens me that these are well-to-do people who looked far better before their facial work. Natural aging is far more appealing. I don't feel that this is a subjective matter. That, along with the uncontrollable droughts are the only California trends that I feel can't die soon enough.

I don't mean to disparage them or anyone, they were the nicest couple. The reason I brought it up is that (aside from their driving habits) Californians are super nice, in general and after the guy basically apologized on behalf of his entire state for causing our current housing burden (we reached 100% housing capacity) I just I told him what I tell everyone here, that there's an impending mass migration that will eventually affect everyone worldwide and that the pilfered tribal lands of Cascadia (the Northwest) have laid waste to its entire native population, so it is now meant to be shared equally with all of mankind alike so that the burden of drought can be better dispersed, as it should be. As easy as it was for me to judge these nice people as the caricatures of Californians that they were, it was just as easy for me to sincerely welcome them and overlook their extremes.l

Good for you I guess, I was born and raised here and fucking HATE that shit.

It's not really the cold (it's not that cold at all here save for a few weeks) or the wet that gets me but the darkness. I've been getting seasonal depression the past few years because of the dark, I can barely get myself out of bed because it's dark until 9AM and relatively dark and grey until 4:30 when the sun goes down...

Oh and then sometimes it rotates between a drizzle and downpour for 30 days straight and it fucking sucks as a runner because your nipples get rubbed raw by the rain. But mostly fuck the darkness.

I love this place for many different things but if I could change one thing it would be the 250 days of cloud cover and the amount of daylight we get in the late autumn-early spring.

The seasonal anxiety disorder (S.A.D.) Really fucks with some people. It is researched and widely diagnosed in clinical psychology. The common prescriptions are the multitudes of anxiety and depression meds, but also the mood light which Is a little mirrored contraption with incandescent light bulbs, proven to improve the moods of SAD sufferers. Luckily it's never affected me, even though I suffer clinical depression and vitamin D deficiency, which is so prevalent in the Northwest. It rarely gets cold here because of the temperate coastal climate; so just layering a breathable light raincoat has always served me well for those brisk winter walks that always refresh me when I'm feeling down.

...up until right after it was posted here.

Absolutely gorgeous.

There was this before they sanitized all threads.

Wow. The obliviousness is beautiful.

If nothing else, careless is definitely living up to his main screen name.

I've got a conspiracy theory that he and u/hibernator are one in the same. One hibernates (he is literally never on) and the other one acts carelessly.

I gilded wawup for that comment. First ever time buying gold. Shame the thread got taken down.

Goddamn those callout replies are sooo satisfying

Which is interesting, because accounts <1 day old are typically not allowed to post to Seattle (to cut down on spam) and would have to be mod-approved.

I wonder which mod approved that account.

[–]komnenosYOUR FLAIR TEXT HERE

The only mod that has any real power

Maybe they forgot they could do that

Look at it this way; if the news story about the Seahawks or the Mariners would appear in a newspaper in the "News" section, we'll permit the post. Otherwise, it's something that belongs in the sports section, and therefore would be better served by being put into /r/Mariners or /r/Seahawks. Make sense?

Wow, I'm so glad the r/portland mods are nothing like this asshole. He/she is precisely the type of person who should not be in charge of anything, ever.

Was there more to that post? Because that snippet alone doesn't strike me as douchey.

It probably has more to due with me being familiar with the many drama posts that almost always have to do with that mod and the petty rules like the above they implement in the sub.

If anything, the Portland mods are too liberal in what they allow. Pretty much news from the state of Oregon remains up, sports and all.

I personally don't think /r/Portland moves fast enough for that to be a problem. Also, /r/Oregon is basically dead, which is one of the reasons I'm in /r/Portland all the time despite not living there (the other one is to keep up so I don't even have to ask the question 'where should I eat?' when I visit).

Right, I wasn't necessarily saying it was bad, more pointing out how opposite the moderation on r/Portland is compared to r/Seattle.

That quote was actually in response to my question:

Just out of curiosity, given that news stories for the Seahawks and Mariners are routinely removed from this sub for being 'Not Seattle Related', would the subreddits for those two teams be considered competing?

And another question:

Is there a list of approved subreddits that are acceptable to discuss/link to?

Then, after he posted what PDXSb quoted above, I responded:

I suppose that makes sense. I disagree strongly, but I see where you're coming from. Follow up question:

Where is this codified in the rules for this subreddit?

It seems on of the chief complaints about the moderation of this subreddit is that the rules are arcane and obscured so that the subscribers really don't know why their posts have been removed. When posts about Seattle sports teams, articles on Amazon, documentaries about Amanda Knox, secure scheduling in Seattle, etc. are all removed for not being 'Seattle Related' by the modteam, how are we the users supposed to know what all is actually Seattle related?

I really have no interest in involving myself with drama, but I'd highly recommend either loosening up what constitutes a 'Seattle Related' post and letting the voting system take care of it, or at least codifying what exactly is allowed and not allowed in the subreddit's rules.

I didn't get a response to that before he locked down the thread.

I don't want to get too deep into talking about all this as I posted in the latest thread, but it seems the biggest beef that everyone has is that what the rules for the subreddit are in practice don't match up with what all is posted. Posts get removed, people get banned for infractions against rules that are not documented, leading to the impression that the mods are acting as malevolent overlords.

[–]jcpbr/SubredditDrama/comments/3mh0kj/-/cvf0kmr 8 ポイント9 ポイント  (2子コメント)

Arbitrary application and enforcement of subreddit rules - in other words, the r/Seattle mods permban you merely for mentioning r/SeattleWA even on SRD, and remove everything they can get their grubby hands on for the sake of a pretend-godmod.

It's like watching flustered 9-year-olds flipping tables to advertise how they're some big-time gangstas and demand respect from everyone else for their rights to be obnoxious fork-in-the-road pricks.

Here's the ban message that the mod in question sent me:

Is this about the new SeattleWA sub? I thought regional/local subs usually work as a network. It seems silly to ban/delete comments that simply refer to other subs. -me

That was the comment that got you banned. -him

Didn't the mods originally say for people to post to other Seattle related subreddits when posting non-news stuff about Seattle?

I hate invisible rules with a burning passion.

I think limiting the types of obviously location specific posts in a location specific subreddit is dumb if not douchey. Those subs never have as much content as general subs, so unless your goal as a mod is to strangle the sub to death or ensure that you can personally read every post per day then there's no damn point in being that restrictive.

Careless is making money off of the sub. He doesn't want the competition. He also seems to get sick satisfaction from all the drama.

Wow, I'm so glad the r/portland mods are nothing like this asshole. He/she is precisely the type of person who should not be in charge of anything, ever.

Until today, I didn't know there was such thing as competing subreddits.

Do they both still get to make the playoffs?

/r/SeattleWA just made it to regionals and is pretty stoked about it.

Yeah, seems like /r/Seattle has been kicking /r/SeattleWA out of the running, even before the start of the regular season, for the last 3 years or so. I've been waiting on /r/SeattleWA to come up as an underdog.

and the Seattle mods are allegedly banning you for discussing or participating in it anywhere so use caution in this SRD thread.

I'm going to test this out. Let's see if I can get banned from more than just /r/the_donald.

UPDATE: Locked and removed overnight by /r/Seattle mods. Of course, nothing cross-posted to /r/SeattleTransparency. Some chatter on /r/SeattleWA that some anti-bot automation issued a ton of one-day bans to LOTS of people since Careless's comment karma apparently dropped faster than shit from a goose's cloaca after eating a bar of laxative chocolate and it looked like botting.

[–]jcpbr/SubredditDrama/comments/3mh0kj/-/cvf0kmr 17 ポイント18 ポイント  (2子コメント)

If you even mention the other "competing" sub which a certain North Capitol Hill moderator has a beef with he will ban you from this sub.

This is like watching the social aftermath of Amy's Baking Company post-Kitchen Nightmares — condensed into a subreddit!

I got banned for mentioning /r/SeattleWA user count, but not the subreddit name.

Even his rules have secret rules.
