Paul Scholes has claimed that his former side are like "the real Manchester United" again following their impressive unbeaten run.
The former Red Devils midfielder was speaking on BT Sport prior to Manchester United's FA Cup third round tie against Reading.
Scholes has been critical of his former club's style of play over the past few seasons, notably when United were under van Gaal's control.
Despite the Dutchman winning last year's FA Cup, Scholes claimed that United finishing fifth was simply not good enough.
At the time, he said: "I think the big thing is the style of play we've seen from Manchester United over the last year. It's not been what you expect.
"Louis van Gaal has said that himself. He talked last week about the need to choose creative players to create more chances, that's exactly what Manchester United do. They [used to] go for the throat all the time."
But United came into this season's FA Cup 3rd round tie against Reading unbeaten in 13 appearances - winning their last seven.
Speaking prior to the fixture, Scholes said: "Manchester United over the last six weeks have looked the real Manchester United of old.
"They want to score goals, they're playing with purpose, they're creating chances all the time - and they're difficult to play against."
