The Griezmann problem (self.reddevils)

I apologize if this topic has been discussed already, but in this post I will specifically talk about the formations in our squad. We've been linked to Griezmann for quite a while now. He's been very good for Atletico and he also had an impressive performance in the Euros. But the question is; where does he fit in our current squad? The Euros already showed that you can't have Pogba and Griezmann in the same team without one of them performing below their standards. Pogba performs at his best in a 3 man midfield so this only leaves 3 players up top, assuming that we have 4 defenders. Griezmann has played as a shadow striker. Would we possibly pay a world record transfer fee for Griezmann just to play him out of position? I don't know. We don't currently play with 2 strikers and even if we did, then one of Martial or Mkhitaryan has to sit on the bench. So I've thought about a possible solution to this problem and I've only came up with one so far; the 3-5-2 formation. It would look something like this:

This formation doesn't come without problems of its own though. There are no RB or LBs in this system, so no Valencia or Shaw. Valencia has been performing really well for us and Shaw has the talent to become a key player, despite his recent injuries. This formation would also leave the wings pretty vulnerable, it would mean that Mkhi and Martial have to track back more often so they wouldn't be able to run through defenses as often as they do now. I don't know if there is a way to utilize Griezmann as best as possible, unless Pogba suddenly starts performing well in a 2 man midfield. What are your thoughts on this? Any possibly solutions? I'm sorry if this is a low quality post but it's something that has been on my mind for a while.

Ibrah has a 2 year deal...consider that when signing a 25 year old forward half way through year 1 of said deal. Our main scoring threat has a shelf life that is short, you'll need someone to step in.

This is true but Griezmann has never played as a solitary striker, he's like Rooney, best when played as the deeper lying forward in a partnership

Which Rashford would fit the role of well, but seeing how many games you HOPE to play, you'll need more than one or two major scoring threats.

Which then creates the problem of Paul Pogba being reverted to part of a midfield 2, which as we saw earlier in the season, is not his preferred role in the team

I doubt we would buy Griezmann to replace Ibra. They play different positions.

Thats not what I said, never said they played the same position. I said they are both scoring threats...you need a scoring threat to replace a scoring threat.

So what is your solution? It's unknown if Griezmann can play as a lone striker, and having two strikers means that Pogba would play in a 2 man midfield which hinders him completely.

The solution is not to buy a player unless he fits our system. If Jose thinks he can fit him in then by all means buy him. If I had a set budget to improve us in the summer I'd avoid buying Griezmann and focus on improving our midfield options. That being said the little kid in me would love to see a player of Griezmann's quality at United.

I forsee Martial adopting a more central role in future, with Rashford potentially on the left or right. HM and AG will be able to float around a cause havoc.

In that formation, you would need either wingers who track back immensely or WBs who are capable of moving forward and tracking back.

Martial's defensive work rate is abysmal. Teams only need to attack their right side to overwhelm us.

Griezmann doesn't do anything for United except make paying 100m for Pogba look useless.

Yeah. This formation is only my solution to accommodating Griezmann in our squad, it doesn't necessarily make us play better. That's why I'm kind of iffy on buying Griezmann

Agree, I want Griezmann but I can't see how he would slot into this team. Think we would need to look for a replacement for Zlatan in the summer.

I've wanted him since 2013, but now having doubts since our midfield 3 has looked so good and I don't want to see Pogba go back to being limited in a 2 man midfield.

The only way I can see getting the best out of him and Pogba is if he's able to play as a solo striker, but we haven't really seen him play that role before, and that's risky.

I think has the ability to play that role, but It would also require a shift in tactics and would mean choosing between him and zlatan.

IIRC Costa never really played as a solo striker at atletico either before a Chelsea bought him either?

I don't think there's a clear solution without risks

He doesn't necessarily have to play on the right. It's just Bailly, Rojo and Jones in some kind of order at the back.

I guess Mourinho has the plan to play a 4-3-3 with all of our fowards(imo Martial, Griezmann, Mkhitaryan) constantly switching positions and causing problems with fast plays.

I can only see Griezmann playing as a sole striker in the system we have now. At the end of the day, the 3 man midfield is absolutely crucial to the way we play and sacrificing a midfielder to shoehorn Griezmann in next to Ibra/Rashford would be an abomination.

We all know Griezmann plays off another striker, but maybe he'll adapt to playing on his own there (a big ask along with adapting to EPL). The only other thing I can see is possibly a false 9 situation with Martial/Mkhitaryan supporting but Jose has never played a team like that.

There seems to be genuine interest in Griezmann and for that to be the case Jose must already have plans for him in the team, so maybe he knows something we all don't. Overall, I wouldn't turn down signing him and leave the headache to Jose.

That would be pretty devastating. And considering Pogba likes drifting wide anyway, he can perform as a false winger.
