Depends how it works out, I suppose. If they're something extra in the "hearts" pool, that's good (higher total chance to get any soul heart item), but if they're a subitem of soul hearts, that's bad (same total chance, full soul heart chance cut).

Someone tested it (no link sry) and its an extra part of the pickups altogether essentially dropping a half heart instead of dropping nothing.

I had a hard run to the Cathedral, then next thing I know The Haunt popped out of a dual portal room. I noped out of that run near enough instantly. These portals have got to have a heavy rework.

What punishment do you speak of? Half soul hearts only happen on random drops, and when do you ever get soul hearts on random drops? Things that normally give full Soul hearts still give full Soul hearts.

Well... You can, that's the point, besides, the half hearth is only been added to the HEART pool. So it does NOT replace Soul hearts. Besides, even if it's a single player game, if the dev decides to punish you for doing something, he can. And why do people have their panties in such a twist about the half soul hearts?

Depends on your outlook. Im not 100% sure if this is true or not, but many people are saying that by adding half soul hearts into the pool, you reduce your chance to drop a full soul heart. Honestly, the way I see it is that it isn't really a bad thing. It just adds another layer to the game.
