so i’m going around asking my friends this for research purposes. cis people, if you don’t mind talking about it, could you reblog this and describe what being your gender feels like to you? how do you know you’re the gender you are? is there a particular reason you wouldn’t want to be another gender? and also, how do you think sexism affects your user experience of being that gender— does it make you like it more, or less, or even matter at all?
thanks for answering!
Lmfao how embarrassing
my gender feels like I’m contracted to a set of expectations I never agreed to and it’s alienating as fuck to have people treat it like a fun identity to try on like you’re in the Macy’s dressing room uwu
I think if I had any gender feel at all it would be annoyance at the idea of having to have a gender.
someone conflating gender essentialism and radical feminism in the reblogs. brings back memories.
wait, this person’s argument is because they don’t like being a girl no one else should get to try being one for fun? that’s incredible. i mean call me a crazy fucking weirdo but i think everyone should enjoy being their gender, and also have fun.
Anyone who ‘enjoys their gender and has fun’ is not a woman. I promise.
Imagine being so blind to misogyny that you actually think being a woman is a “fun” thing to be and not like, you know, a member of the class oppressed under patriarchy through financial, legal, social, and sexual violence….
“Woman” is not an identity, it is not something you can try being for fun. It is a state of being, an adult human female. Fuck anyone who thinks “woman” is a fun costume to play around with
But being a woman is enjoyable for some people, to the extent that they’re so certain they’re a woman they risk their lives to live as one. It’s ridiculous to say that trans women are just doing it for shits and giggles when it’s so expensive, painful, and dangerous for them to live as women. Being a woman is a very real, very serious identity for them, to the point that they’ll identify as one no matter how many people tell them they aren’t…
But still: a lot of women do actually thoroughly enjoy being women. It’s not a special status you achieve through suffering. It’s just a state of being. And cis women and trans women both seem to agree that it feels good.
i would like to clarify that i do not mean to say that trans women ‘chose’ to be women ‘for fun’, i mean that trans women chose to transition and live as their real gender of being a woman, rather than just keep living in the assigned role of man, because it feels right to them. sorry about the poor wording!
