        So Ubi gave one of the Assassin's Creed games out during the Ubi30 right? SO I got it. Installed Uplay. Tried to install AC. Between some weird controller issues I was having and navigating Uplay, I uninstalled it and got a pirated version. Everything worked flawlessly. I wasn't surprised.

        Steam in 2004/2005 when it was first released (and required to play Half-Life 2) pissed a LOT of people off. Keep in mind this was back when a good portion of the world did not have access to fast broadband. It was horrible. It crashed constantly. It would often say it was preparing to launch a game and then never would.

        none of that matters now because they fixed it. steam is very reliable these days to the point that when it does actually go down for maybe 15mins or so half the internet freaks out.

        Uplay is a clunkly, broken mess of a DRM that doesn't even work that well. not to mention they force people who buy from steam to install it on top, which is the most annoying IMO. its the reason why I don't buy Ubisoft games. luckily for me I haven't missed much because of this rule. actually I have missed quite a few duds so props to Ubisoft lol.

            everyone always says "steam is DRM," but it's not necessarily true. you need steam to download many games, but the drm is optional. many games (especially indie ones) are drm-free and you can launch them without steam. you can even copy them on a flash drive, if you like.

            I have no problem with DRM as long as the game still works and the system is flexible enough. I can share my Steam games with my brother and vice versa and play them from multiple machines. I can play most games offline, can mod to my hearts content, and everything just seems to work. Steam is DRM, but it seems to help more often than hurt, while many other pieces of DRM seem to punish customers.

                This has almost always been the case. Every now and then Ubisoft makes a game that I think I might want to play, then I remember uplay.

                As a direct result of uplay I do t purchase or play any Ubisoft games. I don't think I'm missing out on much.

                    Most pirated games are downloaded and installed via iso files.

                    ISO file is basically a disc image of the original content + a folder with the crack. Daemontools is a drive emulator. You can get daemontools lite for free.

                    So you mount the ISO into daemontools, then your computer basically reads it as if you have a real game disc in a real physical drive, usually the autorun kicks in and you can just hit the setup or install exe. If it doesn't go to my computer, right click on the drive with the game in it and click open, that will show you the content that is on the disc. From there you can double click the setup executable, and you'll also be able to access the crack, which you'll have to paste into the game's install folder that holds the exe files, after it is finished installing.

                    The only thing that I didn't mention is that most games you're going to download are going to come compressed in a rar archive. You'll need winrar or an equivalent to extract the iso file, along with a decent amount of space.

                    Compressed aaa titles are anywhere from 35gb - 60gb, uncompressed obviously larger than that. So you're looking at over 100gb of free space just to extract the iso. And then the additional space you'll need to actually install the game. Once you're done installing the game you won't need the iso or the rar files(once you're done seeding) so you can get rid of them to get some space back.

                      You could technically burn the ISO to a physical disc, or use a legit copy and just get the crack. AFAIK it uses some sort of uplay emulator to work but it's been a while.

                      Mounting is not hard though. daemontools lite and bam.

                        It's honestly not really any worse than steam nowadays. Yeah it doesn't have the same deals or amount of games or anything and it sucks you can't just have them all in one place, but the program itself works unlike in the past. I remember uplay would eat my entire bandwidth for no reason no matter what even when not downloading anything, making everything else unusable.

                                What gets me is downloading Farcry 3 from the Steam servers, only to have Uplay re-download a package that is actually almost a gigabyte larger than the entire game.

                                Then the Overlay..... Yea turn that off and you will un-cripple most of their games. Brings farcry 3 from 25 FPS to 60 FPS on my crappy little alienware Alpha.

                                          I think peoples' problems is that they can't have a centralized platform; EA, Valve, and Ubisoft all have their own overlay and people don't want that many logins; I literally only use origin for Mass Effect 3 multiplayer because all my friends and community investment is on steem.

                                                    Well because uplay is way more deadly but affects less people, survivability for cancer varies but for uplay it's always 99% fatalities the rest get crippled. It is also infectious so if u see someone who uses uplay daily u have to shoot him/her and burn the body on the spot then contact the airforce to bomb a 20 mile radius of the pc

                                                        Try updating Blacklist through Uplay. After upgrading to windows 10 and having Uplay decide that Blacklist was no longer installed and I'd have to redownload and reupdate again I decided to just buy the game on Steam instead. It was far less of a hassle.

                                                        Despite coming out long after Uplay introduced their own automatic updating service, and being a Ubisoft developed title, Blacklist uses its own separate updater. An updater which runs at roughly dialup speeds. An updater which can only download one update before you have to restart it. An updater which, while it can only download one update at a time, has an option that implies it can download all necessary updates without having to restart, but doesn't actually work.

                                                        I spent 6 hours babysitting Blacklists updater the first time around to get from 1.0 to the latest patch. The entire game, fully patched took less than 2 hours to download via Steam.

                                                        Certainly this isn't the issue with all Uplay games, but this is archetypal of the Uplay experience. It is horribly inconsistent. Some games are fine, others are a frustrating dumpster fire and it really shouldn't be like this when it is Ubisoft games on Ubisofts launcher. The worst part is Ubisoft is more focused on fucking social features and adding a third god damned achievement system than fixing the basic features of their download/install manager.. which is to say, DOWNLOADING and INSTALLING.

                                                        Beyond that even when Uplay works fine the download speeds are atrocious compared to Steam. Every time Ubisoft runs a free weekend I use Steam, because downloading from Steam means the download will be complete in 1-6 hours. Downloading from Uplay means the download will be complete 1-6 hours after the 72 hour free weekend finishes.

I don't know why; for some reason I keep them. Even if they are pointless and the visual re-skins you can buy are pointless too; they are there; in my virtual and worthless account... getting dust and rotting away...

                                                              Right? I've played all the games from UBI 30, Watch_Dogs and Watch_Dogs 2, Farcry 3 and Primal, Anno 2027 and The Crew and have never had an issue with Uplay.

                                                              Hell I got WD2 through Steam, and when I use Steam to launch it, it just pops the Uplay Launching Game window and just seamlessly starts the game up. I have no idea what people are bitching about.

                                                              Uplay's login servers were recently down. Instead of telling me this, it let me try to log in multiple times, then suspended my account for 'suspicious activity' because of the multiple failed logins that uplay itself caused.

                                                              Then when I tried to login through the website or recover my password it treated this as additional suspicious activity, despite these steps also failing because the login servers were down, which uplay continued to not tell me.

                                                              This resulted in an exponentially longer suspension of my account, which uplay didn't tell me either.

                                                              I was left with no way to access my account, no information about why I hadn't been able to login, and no indication of when (if ever) the suspension would end.

                                                              When I tried to contact technical support I couldn't because in order to do this, you must log in to your uplay account...

                                                              Uplay is utter trash compared to both Steam and Origin.

                                                                  The only Uplay game I own is the Division and everytime I open or close the division, it brings up Uplay and it freezes my entire computer for around 2-3 minutes and then goes back to normal. Looked up online, seems I wasn't the only one. Something to do with a controller being plugged in your computer...........don't even ask because the shit is strange to me too.

                                                                  In my latest experiences with anno 2074 whatever I had no direct malfunctions with uplay, for once. I am so offended by opening steam to open uplay, however, that I neglected to obtain Anno 2273 whatever, you know, the moon one, despite reviews claiming it had the best sandbox mode of any anno, my preferred mode. I will probably break down in a sale and grab it some time but i am sick of having so many damn accounts and passwords. It makes security so difficult. This is exactly why i use reddit for all my gaming discussion because now I don't have to have 30 accounts on 30 forums, and its exactly why i use steam for all my actual gaming needs.

                                                                  I don't know if this is Steam's fault or Uplay, but I bought a copy of the original Watch Dogs for $9 through Steam. It installed Uplay which I had to use to enter the activation key. The key I got was already used. Ubisoft's response was pretty much "you're not getting another key, bitch". Thank God for refunds.

Of my 4000 games on steam, I absolutely refuse to buy any that require me to install UPLAY. Unfortunately this means I've never played any Assassin's Creed, recent FarCry, Tom Clancy games... I won't go near them until Ubisoft abolishes Uplay.

I don't even really want to play anything on there right now but it rubbed me the wrong way that it's even possible. They should put a little more effort into making sure it's really the owner of the account adding the authenticator. On the flip side I feel like steam guard does a great job protecting my account.

Certain items were unusable if you didn't connect via uPlay, but if you DID play on uPlay, it was impossible to save your game locally. You would then get locked out of your save file if you ever didn't have a connection.
