I'm always impressed by Wikipedia when it comes to bad news. Just a few minutes after a famous person dies, someone has already added the date and cause of death and even changed the whole article to the past tense.

[–]Glitch198 670 ポイント671 ポイント  (23子コメント)

There was also that one time a person was declared dead on wikipedia a couple hours before their body was found.

Some people love to do it for free

[–]IJustWantComment 1490 ポイント1491 ポイント  (123子コメント)

And I'm glad they do, it's nice to have such an up-to-date encyclopedia readily available.

[–]IIllIIllIIlllIIIlllI 256 ポイント257 ポイント  (47子コメント)

Off-topic, but when I was a kid we had an old encyclopedia set that was at least 20 years old. Maybe 30. That's what I did all of my reports and stuff with as a kid. And most people didn't even have that in their house. It's just so crazy to think about now.

[–]MenschwieDu 136 ポイント137 ポイント  (33子コメント)

My father was born 1962 and got a encyclopedia as a present when he was 7, 1969. I was born 1990 and read in that encyclopedia until 2000ish almost on a daily basis out of curiousity. The encyclopedia still exists in my fathers shelf and once a year or so when I visit my hometown I browse n the encyclopedia though it starts to be more and more fragile. Those old encyclopedias really have their own magical charm especially with those drawings and photos. Just as Vinyl are not as high quality as today's music but they have a special charm. That said, of course I also use Wikipedia nowadays almost on a daily basis (if not even more than once a day).

Damn. I've never even thought about what wikipedia might be worth to me. I'm gonna go donate.

[–]say592 67 ポイント68 ポイント  (0子コメント)

Shit, I haven't donated in years, but it's true. I donate to other organizations with similar mission statements (distribution of information, keeping people informed and educated, etc) but I just never give Wikipedia any love, even though I use it almost daily.

That changes this year. I'm going to set up a monthly donation

Imagine yourself stumbling upon a magic lamp a few days from now and wishing for immortality upon a magic genie which grants you this wish instantly.

The only problem is you didn't think this through. A seemingly infinite time has passed and there is no life in the universe any more. You've been floating on the void alone for more 5 quadrillion years. There hasn't been a single event anywhere in the universe for that long. Your brain is completely void of ideas since there is nothing to stimulate it.

No thoughts in your mind except for one. One simple thought that you're condemned to repeat over and over again for all eternity:

"I'm thankful for people who can turn despair into a laugh"

From the live thread:

The Governor of the Istanbul Province, Vasip Sahin, reported that a single armed assailant was dressed as Santa Claus, which is an apparent Turkish tradition for police officers at celebrations.

So it's apparently a tradition in Turkey for police officers to dress up as Santa Claus for celebrations? Don't really know where /u/ghill1213 got that source from though. Maybe he wants to chip in.

[–]amckaazli 249 ポイント250 ポイント  (13子コメント)

Yeah during New Years Turkish police dress up as Santa Claus when they patrol the crowds. The idea is to force criminals into thinking twice before they pick pocket drunk people, since there is a Santa in every street and there is no way to know whether it's the police or not.

[–]vrile 123 ポイント124 ポイント  (5子コメント)

And sadly, they now realize that there is no way to tell if it's a terrorist or not either.

[–]tinkthank 141 ポイント142 ポイント  (5子コメント)

Santa Claus is seen more as a New Years figure in a lot of Muslim countries rather than a Christmas one. It's not unusual to find them in certain countries like Turkey during New Years celebrations.

It's unfortunate, but Istanbul is one of the largest cities in the world and even with heavy police presence, it is still very likely that terrorists in achieving their fucked up goals.

Also as I heard from Turkish TV's they are still at that night club. The club's name is Reina, which is pretty popular and high-level night club in Istanbul.

Update - CNN Turk report: 1 police and 1 citizen dead. 40 - 60 people wounded. There was 700 to 800 person during the attack happened. Attackers were speaking Arabic. CNN Turk reporter says it's similar with Paris attacks.

Update - Official Statement: At least 35 dead. Attacker was one person. First he killed police in the door, then get in to club. At least 40 wounded.

I was a mere few hundred meters away from the location when the attack was carried out, but I had no idea why the police were whizzing by and roads were being blocked until I came back home and read the news.

Such is the power of terror in the age of information. Each attack is closely documented and broadcast to viewers all around the world. Even if the terrorists don't kill enough people to be statistically significant (it's sad enough that this has to be a consideration), the news of the events becomes a deterrent against any popular public activity.

Thats a reflex. See how she spends a very long time not breathing and then suddenly gasps for air, then stops breathing again? Thats a very common sign of a person who is very far gone in the process of dying.

Signs of active dying

much longer periods of pausing in the breathing (apnea)

jaw drop; the patient's jaw is no longer held straight and may drop to the side their head is lying towards

Her mouth is suspended open even though thats an area where shes got an open wound she is unconscious, breathing strangely, and her mouths wide open. Poor girl is gone.

[–]BeeswaxBear 12 ポイント13 ポイント  (1子コメント)

It's been 35 for way too long. 35, in a club with 700? Not likely. Though, this place is much less enclosed than Bataclan and is actually several places that are kind of unified by bar pricing, rather than one enclosed place. Lots of exits, including just jumping away. I won't be surprised to see 100. But, much more escapable than Bataclan.

Sadly, an attack on New Years seems inevitable given the current state of terrorism. Large groups of people will be gathering all around the world celebrating the start of a new year - the perfect targets for terrorists. It's a sad day in Turkey. [–]TheLostKardashian 195 ポイント196 ポイント  (53子コメント)

I think I speak for most people when I say I "knew" at least one incident like this would happen, somewhere, tonight.

Not knew as in, being a terrorist myself, but knew that things couldn't go flawlessly the entire world over. There always seems to be something somewhere every other week, and on a night like NYE, it was a no brainer for me.

Sadly, the methods they use for choosing places to do this sort of thing aren't complex. They literally just choose places with lots of people, so unless you lock yourself in your house and let them win, there is no 100% failsafe way to keep safe. They will always go after numbers.

[–]Wand_Cloak_Stone 68 ポイント69 ポイント  (19子コメント)

Special forces were guarding the area all night. There was way more police in the area than it should.

News say it was the guys in Santa clothes and it was a terrorist attack. They probably didn't suspect from them and thought they're guys came to entertain because of clothes.

They probably attacked with AK-47s and grenades.

Some witnesses are saying 2 attackers still hiding in WC of the club.

Edit: At least 35 people are dead.

Edit2: It's confirmed terrorist attack.

Edit3: Santa clothes thing was a lie. Guy had a hoodie.

I went in May 2013, before ISIL had really organized itself into the destructive force that it is today. Istanbul is an amazing, gorgeous city. You are walking through history at every turn. It saddens me knowing how many people potentially won't ever visit because of attacks like these, and how much more the people who make their living from tourism related industries will have to struggle.

[–]Microthrowaway64 100 ポイント101 ポイント  (4子コメント)

She is agonal breathing, essentially shes already gone at this point. Agonal Breathing is the final stages of death, the body is basically trying in vain to stay alive.

Shes on the way out :(

[–]scrambledswag 68 ポイント69 ポイント  (7子コメント)

She looked like she was in hypovolemic shock, which means her body was taking measures to prevent her immediate death. Agonal breathing, which is what she appeared to be doing in the video, is not a good sign in a trauma scenario. Based on the loss of blood and probable time it would take for her to get treated (they appear to be in the middle of the whole mess and not easy to be reached by rescue crews), her situation is very bad. I hope I am wrong here

[–]Philodendritic 25 ポイント26 ポイント  (0子コメント)

No. She is certainly dead. That was 'agonal breathing' and it's a primitive, lower-brain neural reflex. She was gone at the time of the video and the gasping was merely that neural reflex, the last ditch effort the body is programmed to do when we're o2 starved and dying. Really really upsetting to see it, do not watch it again if you're smart. I wish I hadn't.

At least she was no longer suffering when it was taken. I hope she didn't suffer at all and never knew what happened.

How could you wake up in the morning and be like "yeah, awesome, tonight I'm going to gun down a bunch of innocent people who are trying to enjoy the holiday. Best day of my life." And they always end up being cowards and killing themselves. Fuck these guys ain't nobody got time fo dat

this is the biggest obstacle or should I say advantage america has when it comes to wars. The seas keep people out. This why places like Pakistan went to shit after the afghan war. The shitstorm next door makes its way in.

Just like gangs did in America. I pray that it doesnt get worse for the turkish citizens. They didnt do shit to deserve what their leader got them; that prick

A gunman has reportedly opened fire inside a nightclub in Istanbul during New Year's Eve celebrations.

Large numbers of police and paramedics were sent to the well-known bar in the Ortaköy district, CNN Turk reported.

The broadcaster said several people were injured, with ambulances transferring them to hospital for treatment.

There was no immediate confirmation of casualties from police.

Istanbul has been the target of a series of recent attacks by Isis and Kurdish extremist groups.

Twin bombings carried out by the Kurdistan Freedom Falcons (TAK) killed 44 people on 10 December, while other blasts have targeted police and the security services.

Isis was behind the attack on Istanbul Airport in July, as well as previous suicide bombings targeting tourists and shoppers.

A supporter of the so-called Islamic State was responsible for massacring 49 people at an LGBT-friendly nightclub in Orlando, Florida, in June.

Edit 1: Istanbul had been on high alert for any terror attacks, with some 17,000 police officers on duty in the city.

Edit 2: CNN Turk report: 1 police and 1 citizen dead. 40 - 60 people wounded. There was 700 to 800 people in the nightclub whenthe attack happened. Attackers were speaking Arabic. CNN Turk reporter says it's similar to the Paris attacks

Edit 3: Gunman remains inside Istanbul nightclub and police are negotiating with him

Edit 4: Hurriyet reports an eyewitness saw 3 attackers http://www.hurriyet.com.tr/son-dakika-unlu-gece-kulubune-silahli-saldiri-40323300

Edit 5: Update from NTV : Most likely 1 attacker(not 2 as previously reported), who got rid of the santa costume and is still on the run Several people in the club jumped into the sea during the attack - they are being rescued at the moment

Edit 6: Turkish television announces two people have been killed in the attack.

It is not known if any of those are the gunmen.

There are also reports of up to 80 people wounded now.

Edit 7: Witness via TV 24: Attackers threw 2 grenades

Edit 8: At least 35 dead and 40 injured in attack on Istanbul nightclub, governor says

Reports of 34 people dead are just starting to come in. Media is of course silent as it is Turkey.

I'm a Muslim and I admit we have a problem. The number of people on Twitter who supports these attacks are just ridiculous. I'm not talking about random eggs either (thousands of followers). Isis need to be wiped as soon as possible. Muslims also need to start to get angry as they get with israel. Bashar alssad killed more palestinians than israel did in the last 20 years. Terrorist killed more civilians than the US did in Iraq.

It's not ISIS that needs to go (well, practically yes). They are just a "brand" currently. If they are "gone" these people will reform under any other name (it could be Dick Suckers and Co. as long as I care) but they will still carry out attacks.

It amazes me how strongly they feel about having no fun and no freedom. They are literally willing to kill themselves rather than allow some people to have a drink and a dance with a member of the opposite sex.

They must feel deeply deeply threatened.
