'Getting your coins back" simply means a wallet purposely forgetting about a transaction that you made after a few days simply because your node is about the only node that still knows about it, since it didn't get confirmed after several days (oftentimes due to fee being too low).

This is the behavior only in a few wallets. Recent versions of Bitcoin Core behave this way (you can spend your coin again three days after no confirmation).

Which wallet client are you using?

You can try to give the transaction a boost, if ViaBTC pool knows about it: https://www.viabtc.com/tools/txaccelerator/

Even if it hasn't been a three day wait, you can always export your private key used in the transaction and try to spend those another way -- e..g, sweep using a mobile wallet.
