I spy with my little eye- a disposable camera.

it's odd seeing an iPhone and a disposable camera in the same photo

Disposable cameras are coming back I think because people want physical copies of their photos

Which you can also get by printing digital files..

Cheap film photo stock has a different feel than digital phone cameras that a lot of people like.

True, I shoot analog and know what you mean. I was only addressing the physical aspect of the comment

Hipsters

Dunno about that, disposable camera at a party is a pretty fun game. Plus it's convenient, just point and shoot, no muddling with unlocking the phone and finding the camera app.

Plus the whole smacking it to trigger the flash thing if you're an asshole.

Omg I forgot about that. Best "feature" ever.

And you can pass it between people and let everyone at the party contribute to taking photos! In general its just very novel and could be fun.

Also you can take it apart and turn it into a mini-taser but that might be just me :x

TIL using a disposable camera makes you a hipster. I'm pretty sure breakfast, tying your shoelaces and breathing are also hipster activities now

You eat breakfast wow dude like that's so freaking retro

I'm more about post-fastism. I think the idea of one meal to break a fast is farcical, that's I have an IV drip down my throat which feeds me a deconstructed coffee and granola bar every 2 hours while I sleep.

The movement is really making waves in Melbourne at the moment.

It's practically just a catchall term for something a person doesn't like/understand at this point.

Well, it was always kind of like that, but admittedly, IMO, the whole 'hipster = bad' thing was always a bit contrived and self-righteous..

Or is it time travellers from the not too distant future, who happens to be hipster enough to have an iPhone, visiting a not too distant past when disposable cameras were in vogue?

Disposable cameras are fun, although it does seem wasteful and you don't ever get to see your pictures. If it's an important event, that you want to remember, I recommend using a real camera.

IIRC in the exhibit of Kubrick's work that LACMA had for a while they had a section which was just his Napoleon library, slap full of books. And possibly some writing he did for it? It's been a while since I've seen it but it was obvious how much effort he'd put into it.

I would argue that the sharp, focused lighting, the pose, the angle and expression all look very renaissance-like.

I don't know much about those particular images, but only the last one looks Renaissance, and the first one is definitely baroque.

[–]Ronald--Raygun 24

I think you might be right there. But generally people think of renaissance as what it was and what came as a result, since painting prior to that was very 2-dimensional.

please don't shop at H&M, find a similar coat somewhere else if you can. H&M has some of the worst human rights violations in their production chain, some of the worst environmental behavior, and they routinely steal designs from other designers.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but can you provide some info on that?

No worries! I'm happy to show some documentation. I leared all of this first from the documentary called The True Cost, which is a great watch that I'll highly reccomend for anyone, but I'll provide some other sources too. Here is a NYT article that talks about H&M's involvement in unsatisfactory conditions for workers. Here is a Quartz article that touches upon how bad for the environment "fast fashion" as a whole is, and here is a more specific Greenpeace report detaling how companies includig H&M have dumped untreated and unfiltered chemical biproducts into rivers.

As far as stealing designs I did confuse H&M for Urban Outfitters, which is the biggest offender in this regard, but there are a few articles about H&M doing this as well.

Hope this helps!

That Greenpeace report is over 5 years old and H&M has improved on their sustainability and environmental issues vastly since then.

Even if sustainability has improved, fast fashion is still a major problem with this. The whole H&M model is set up around selling new clothes as often as possible, and this generates an incredible amount of waste. There are alternatives, such as buying clothes for life, and so forth. The idea that you continuously need to be 'in style' or what have you is one of the worst things for the environment and the garment industry has become the world's second dirtiest industry in the world as a result.

I thought we were talking about H&M and not the whole fast fashion industry?

You should read H&M 2015 Sustainability Report. Their steps towards recycling of clothes has tackled the issue of people having more clothes to throw away. The report tells facts like H&M being one of the biggest polyester recyclers in the world, having recycled 22,000 tons of garments in 2 years, provided 5 million garments to charitable causes in 2015 etc. H&M has large programs towards recycling of clothes.

I do hope they are truly dedicated to this venture and are able to tackle the problem, but there are still doubts and critics who point out that a company can say one thing, and do another. This Quartz article goes into detail.

given the limitations of current technology, it would likely take H&M up to 12 years to use just 1,000 tons of clothing waste. Meanwhile, it produces that same volume of new clothes in a matter of days. H&M didn’t deny her calculation when asked about it, pointing out instead that it does indeed remain difficult to recycle fabric. “Unfortunately it is not possible to close the loop and recycle all types of materials into new textile fibres today,” a company spokesperson said.

And Greenpeace states that

“H&M’s Recycling Week is in reality a week of illusions since only one percent of collected clothing can be used as recycled fibers,”

(More in article)

But fast fashion is still a barrel trained at earth's temple, and it doesn't matter if H&M has made that bullet 100% lead free.

What is your solution to providing affordable clothing for a shrinking middle class?

Aren't those human rights accusations from the point of view of developed countries, but most companies in the developing world have poor worker conditions because they are poor?

The countries are forced to push workers beyond humane working conditions to meet the demands set by western companies. Many companies have facilities in underdeveloped nations that are not death traps, but many large industries are always looking to cut costs, often at the expense of safety.

Definitely not. I have no idea where you got the info that H&M has one of the worst environmental behaviour. H&M has large recycling and green iniative programs in their business and they're improving on it. Take a look at H&M Conscious.

And I think you're mistaking Zara and Urban Outfitters with the stealing of designs... There's like a couple of cases where H&M has been allegedly copied a design. Talking about "routinely"?

Edit: For example H&M dropped their Co2 emissions by -56% between 2014 and 2015. And since 2013 they have gathered over 22,000 tonnes of recycled textiles. That's 100 million t-shirts worth of fabric. And 78% of their energy was renewable in 2015 compared to 27% in 2014.

I thought you were going to talk about the quality of the clothes and got scared. I feel awful because as long as it's cheap and good quality IDGAF where it came from or how it had to be made.

Personally I do think their clothes are low quality. All the buttons fell off my last H&M coat within a month. The style and prices are pretty good though.

If I were you I would spend a little time looking into sustainable and fair trade companies. There are some great clothing stores out there that sell long lasting or recycled clothes that don't harm the environment or cause the deaths of 1000 workers in Bangladesh while still being affordable. Often times too, these clothes last much longer than something you could get at H&M. It's not that hard to be a conscious consumer, and if enough people start doing it it can make a big difference in all our lives!

Being a conscious consumer is not something unheard of. I would recommend watching the documentary called The True Cost about what sorts of things go into the fast fashion industry and what makes it so harmful to our planet. Just because a lot of brands do horrible things does not make those things okay, and people should strive to find the few brands that pay decent wages, and don't pollute the environment.

If people don't start learning how to live sustainably, then there won't be a world for much longer.

I would recommend not basing your opinions on any given topic on a documentary

I definitely agree! Documentaries can be great jumping off points for issues, but people should always do their own research afterwards. For example the documentary Cowspiracy is extremely evocative about how much pollution animal agriculture creates, but the filmmaker and the interview guests are not always the most reputable.

Back on topic though, here is some further reading about fast fashion:

    NPR

Please stop going to Internet advice forums, it is only hurting you. Those pants style are loved on mfa, but they are disgusting. It is the worst possible shape for pants. Combined with the clown shoes, you have the outline of a squiggly fun house mirror reflection.

The widening at the top combined with the leant back stomach out posture make your hips look small, and your waste large, and your shoulders narrow. This is the opposite of good.

Edit: To be constructive and not just critical, straight cut sweatpants like uniqlo has, or chinos, or jeans or any other kinds of pants that aren't those plus good posture would make your outline almost normal.

I'm guessing on account of it being posted today, the fact that he's wearing more or less a winter jacket, they are outdoors, nobody has a lit cigarette, and there is likely a heated pool or jacuzzi in the shot, that the smoke is actually steam.

I disagree. Look at the blonde girl with the camera. There is clearly some light source behind her and smoke looks to be emanating from there. Maybe a torch or some form of fire.

Perhaps there is a torch or cigarette there, but it looks like there is a pool on the left, behind the man, which may be creating steam as well.

    [–]Textual_Aberration 3 ポイント4 ポイント  (0子コメント)

on account of it being posted today

New Years day, meaning that fireworks are an equally likely culprit, especially considering the bright light source at the epicenter of the cloud. I would guess that the girls in the back are taking selfies in the glow of an active firework.

It's all the smoke that really sets the atmosphere here.

Having both pink and teal in the background gradient is unusual for photos. There aren't very many examples of either in everyday life.

The teal pool itself has been blended out by the smoke, breaking the association with chlorinated swimming pools that our brains would otherwise leap to. It's still there, of course, but our brains are able to see the color as it is instead of the context we'd otherwise be stuck on. It'd be like appreciating clean white porcelain as opposed to looking at a toilet.

The pink, too, is unusual in this case because the original source appears to be more of an orange fire. The smoke and the light casting from the left seem to dull it down to a softer pink. The two colors, usually overlooked, are seen here together.

Compositionally, I almost would prefer if the image could be cut to reduce the right side and emphasize the guy between those two shades. There's not really that much classical art to the right side unfortunately. It has a few relevant elements at least.

The usual shout out to /r/Exhibit_Art which is one of a handful of art subs emerging from the overflow here.

Best picture I've seen this whole year.

Wow, this is a good picture. The red head girl reminds me of an old crush I had.

This picture kind of looks like some poster for a dramatic "upcoming new series" like a television show or something. The guy is the main character, it kind of looks like the girl is looking in his direction all wistful and shit, they're wandering through the crowd. Like a supernatural murder series or something, you know what I'm talking about.

It looks like the girl in the center foreground's hair is on fire, and the girl in the background is pointing at it.

It makes me think of David Lynch/Twin Peaks and Stranger Things if they had a lovechild.

I fake photoshop painted this, because why not the guy is really cool looking. Not pretending to make it look like an actual renaissance painting, but it was fun to mess around for a couple of minutes. http://imgur.com/9z4RKUZ.png

I thought that the guy on the far left had a cushioned hand on his shoulder to make it seem like he had a buddy who had his arm around him. I'm sober, I swear.

Is this a scene from a tv show? It reminds me of an episode of 1000 Ways to Die
