      Why would they not just license the right to do this? The sign in private property and movies do pay to have it in shot, it's not unreasonable to rent it for a few hours to do a publicly stunt.

      Not really inspiration. He was into heroin and that was after they became famous. He did make Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back for Jason to get him clean. Didn't work but he is clean now for the past, I believe, four years.

      A doubt very much that Smith lacked for inspiration. Jay was a heroin addict. Looking to a heroin addict to inspire a pot comedy is like looking to a destructive car accident to inspire a comedy about downhill skiing.

      Yeah that's kinda the sad part. He said he started smoking while working during Zach and Miri Make a Porno after seeing Seth Rogen doing it during filming and how it helped him with his work and his performance.

      Which makes sense for Rogen he's an actor and playing a pot head character. That's his thing. Smith is a director/writer and needs to be working with a different mind set. He says he's working much better than he was when he wasn't smoking, and I'm sure it feels that way to him, but the results are plain to see.

      Edit: I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it, just that generally speaking the quality of his movies has dipped since he started smoking heavily. For him specifically, it doesn't seem to help. That doesn't mean it doesn't help others.

      I disagree. He said on his podcast that after Zack And Miri he realised that he was in a very unusual position as a filmmaker - that he had the contacts and ability to make any movie he wants for the rest of his life, as long as it's below a certain budget.

      Knowing that, he had a choice - take everything very seriously, or chill the fuck out and make movies that interest him. He has the resources to make movies based on premises that make his friends laugh - the Wouldn't It Be Awesome If Someone Made This Movie movies.

      Personally, I think his work now is more interesting than it's been in ages. He's having fun, and he's making ridiculous movies for the joy of it. Tusk was fucking stupid as hell, and people hated it, and he doesn't give a single fuck because he doesn't need to answer to anyone but himself. We need more filmmakers like that. We need more people like that, as far as I'm concerned.

      I understand why others would disagree through, and why some would take personal offence at the fact that he gets to make these movies while other filmmakers don't get to see budgets a tenth of what he gets. But, you know, that's how the world works, as much as it sucks.

      Seth Rogen wrote Pineapple Express, Knocked Up, and Superbad, as well as produced Preacher. He's not just an actor constantly playing a pot head character. I love Kevin Smith but Seth Rogen is a better writer and actor.

        My question is how they (the people that altered the sign) got this done in the first place? There are cameras and motion sensors monitored by LAPD along with flood lights, even a person lives behind the sign that maintains it and the terrain is steep as hell... Watched a segment on the Hollywood sign with Huell Howser, thats where I learned about these things.

          This is one of the most tasteful "pranks" I've ever seen.

          The sign isn't vandalized at all. It just has plastic over it. That can be easily fixed in a couple minutes, it caused no permanent damage, it was humorous, and it was done on the biggest party night of the year.

          Usually, people get drunk and destroy things. Not so in this case.

          This has been done before. In fact, I went to Los Angeles for vacation last year and saw the musical "Weed Shop" which featured the Hollywood sign on the stage set backdrop with it changed to read "Hollyweed".
