Since the 80s (perhaps earlier), the right has been engineering rhetoric in their favor. The early stuff was renaming. The estate tax became the death tax (popularized by Lutz). The affordable care act becomes Obamacare (popularized by Romney). And then there's the coded racism language described by Lee Atwater.
Now, Trump and his ilk are redefining words so as to make certain practices unacceptable. For example, trigger warnings are now thought to be about protecting "delicate liberals" from something that offends them. NO! It's about being sensitive to those who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder--common among rape victims and veterans. Another example, safe spaces are now thought about as protecting "delicate liberals" from people who disagree with them. Again, NO! These are places where members of the LGBT community are literally safe from physical violence and harassment.
They want to redefine these words, I think, to erode any compassion a conservative might feel for someone they disagree with. Joking about something is the easiest way to dismiss it without thinking.
Now, anti-trump Americans are splintering into one of three groups. Those in denial who try to argue that Trump doesn't really have the power to make lasting change (e.g. Steven Pinker). Those who think we should just try to make fun of Trump supporters by using their perversions of "liberal" phrases against them (e.g. anyone who accuses them of needing safe spaces or being cucks). Or anyone who is freaking out and not really sure what to do (e.g. me).
We still have freedom of speech, so use whatever language you want. But keep in mind that when you use the twisted forms of these words, you are promoting their worldview--which basically sucks for everyone but sociopaths.
