Yeah but 2016 had multiplayer.

Look at Carrie Fisher & Debbie Reynolds.

They found each other didn't they?

I'm sorry.

I wouldn't say this is a very good comparison. 2016 was shit because a lot of bad stuff happened. No Mans Sky was shit because absolutely fucking nothing happens.

Honestly 2016 was worse than NMS.

What was so bad about 2016 exactly?

Didn't you hear? Some old people died and people had conflicting political viewpoints. It's literally the worst year in history, nevermind 1939 or anything like that

Oh no. Celebrities died.

Find un-biased sources for information. /r/gaming is a circle-jerk of garbage and hate.

/r/nomanshigh /r/nomanssky Worth checking out to get a better idea of the game. Based on the screen shots and actually playing it, it isn't as bad* as people made it out to be.

*It could have been better from launch. Way better. Their latest update (the foundation update) added a bunch of things to make it better-ish.

It would be fine as a 15 dollar early access

It's not a complete train-wreck. Interesting for the time it holds up for the average player.

I think most people (including myself) are just unhappy that it was marketed as a $60 AAA release. It was not. Priced inappropriately, and "Oh, by the way, not actually multiplayer. We probably should've been clear on that."

Not a bad game, for its concept. If it was done honestly, I think it would've sat well with the indie gaming crowd.

NMS has 31% Steam Review Aggregate, this is by far the lowest score of any AAA priced release of 2016. The recent update didn't go a long way towards addressing the many problems this game has.

TLDR: No.

It was terrible at launch but it got a bit better with the last big update. That said, knowing that more big updates will likely come, I couldn't recommend playing the game in its current state when you might also wait until it is really finished.

Question, how cheap should I wait for no man's sky to go before its worth picking up from a pure curiosity perspective.

I'd say with the last update it's worth $15.

Personally I would say $5 at launch, but $15 since the foundation update.

Am I the only one who thought that 2016 was decent in terms of gaming?

Yes, NMS was not as good as the hype wanted it to be but that felt like the only major title that really was bad.

Instead, how many mediocre to good games did we get? It felt like a lot of publishers stopped trying to appeal to the masses by streamlining or removing features CoD-like.

Look at:

  • XCOM 2
  • Dark Souls 3
  • Doom
  • Overwatch
  • Watch Dogs 2
  • Owlboy (indie)
  • Tyrrany
  • Stellaris
  • Super Hot
  • Titanfall 2
  • Dishonored 2
  • Hitman (2016)
  • Battlefield 1
  • HoI IV
  • Homeworld: DoK
  • Deus Ex: MD
  • Total War: Warhammer
  • etc.

I normally do not ask but upvote this message so that some people might realise that in terms of gaming, 2016 was not bad. Sure there were some stinkers but that is unavoidable.

Xcom 2 was pretty sweet. Wish mods could find their way to console.

Nobody does 2016 like No Man's Sky. 2016 is the best at 2016 and I know because I know 2016 more than anybody. Believe me.

Celebrities died. What else?

People here are living in a special kind of denial if they think celebrities dying was the only bad thing that happened this year. In the US alone there was the whole election drama, the Dakota access pipeline, police shootings, more cases of civil unrest (riots, protests, KKK ralleys) than in the previous 5 years combined, the Russians hacking the US government and Obama swearing retaliation, food shortages and failed harvests all over the world, continuous terrorist attacks throughout Europe...

but yeah... some celebrities dying is what we remember!

The election drama came to good, many criminals in our system were arrested because of it and many people were fired/resigned.

There isnt any proof the russians hacked us, none at all.

There isnt any proof the russians hacked us, none at all.

That makes the fact that your president has sworn retaliation for it even more scary.

Obama is laughable to Putin and the Russian Embassy mocks him. The potus elected this year plans to restore relations with Russia and Putin even addressed a speech within hours of him winning expressing his gratitude. Nothing scary about that.

He's just trying to shit the bed as hard as he can to make it more difficult for the next guy who is in a different political party. Oh no some 4chan wannabes in Russia with no kremlin ties and who really liked Trump went and decided to do some weaksauce brute force 'hacking' and were able to leak actual emails that helped reveal how shitty Clinton really was.

Time to throw out diplomats! The truth should only be revealed if its to my party's benefit!

Partisan politics 101.

If you mean 2016 was the year that a large group of people got overly hyped from poor marketing and even worse assumptions about a project we knew very little about, then yes, 2016 was like No Mans Sky. Self entitled consumers...

No Man's Sky was much, much worse than Spore.

As one of the six other people who put hundreds of hours into spore, it's a niche game.

No Man's Sky was an anticipated game that was supposed to be wonderful, 2016 is just another year.. a leap year, but still just another year. Yeah many greats died but believe Fidel Castro died this year (correct me if I'm wrong). This year was exciting, but it was a goddamned roller coaster. I believe the use of recreational marijuana continued to spread, gay rights were noticed, trump became president(for you republicans). Hell this year was a major shit storm but I have to say I loved it, this year was an exciting agitators. Exploding phones, phones that make no sense, Elon Musk, technology has improved significantly (like usual) BUT ROBOTS! Virtual reality is basically commercial and affordable to many.

I can't verify any of my points since I'm at work, I'd like to pull more actual facts to support myself.

Also stop complaining about No Man's Sky, the developer are updating it immensely and I don't think it's too little too late, give them a chance, the game will get better just give time, if it doesn't well then _('-')_/

Tl;dr The year was an exciting shit storm and shouldn't be compared to the let down that no man's sky was

How many AAA priced games have you paid for where "it will get good, let's give it time" was acceptable? The fact that they are expanding it currently is meaningless - I have already explored the universe, the lore, the gameplay... There is little reason that I, or anyone who has played it, will continue to play it in the future - it's the same reason why most people who will play an unfinished/alpha game during its development, are likely to never touch it again when it fully comes out - adding features doesn't change the fact that that people are not longer interested in the gameplay.

No mans sky was asking $60 for a borderline finished walking/mining simulator or completely unfinished game. Just a few days ago I paid $40 for watch dogs 2 - cheaper, more fun, longer gameplay, and best of all, I don't have to wait for it to be updated to be enjoyable.

2016 has been "Witcher 3", tbh

Actually, this is a good comparison. Two of the biggest political 'upsets' in 2016 is largely contributed to by the utter disaster of mass popular opinion: facts are treated like garbage, feelings are trumpeted over everything, and hype rules all.

NMS has so much hype it just can't live up to it.

NMS is so darn disappointing when compared to the hype that everyone must grade it 'terrible', LOUDLY.

And anyone saying NMS is 'better now, after the patch'? Get ready to get downvoted to oblivion, because that's a fact, and it contradicts the feeling from before! The 'fact' the game is terri-bad must continue!

Updating the game is too late - I won't play it, and the great majority of people won't. It's the same reason why people who play an alpha game are unlikely to return to it when the full version comes out. Even though more features have been added, you have already played the game and got bored of it. Adding a base building mechanic doesn't change the fact that the core gameplay is no longer unique, and at this point, a chore.

No mans sky was simply a shit game. Even without any hype there is just no content or special, unique mechanics in the game. With no hype the game wouldn't be received better, it would just be unheard of, like all the other shitty games that were released in the past. If anything, I would argue that without the hype that no mans sky got, people wouldn't be defending this game with such terrible excuses like "it got better", "give it time", and "it couldn't live up to its hype", it would be just regarded as a shit game, and people wouldn't be defending it.

Tldr; the hype that no mans sky got is the only reason why people defend it - they feel that it got unfairly judged, even though the game would have been shit either way.
