Fuckin western cows. When Indian cows fart, they purify the air.
[–]surly4sure 14 points15 points16 points  (0 children)
And when they piss, they purify the ground.

More important than the article is the flair on this post.

Am I the only one who's finding this hilarious?
[–]rom9 12 points13 points14 points  (0 children)
It's hilarious if taken as a joke. Seriously disturbing if the people take it as if the authors of that paper think they are talking science.
[–]GroundReality 11 points12 points13 points  (1 child)
Yes. Because it's absolutely serious. Did you know that if you sniff the fart of a purely desi cow for an hour a day for the rest of your life, you will be cured of all the disease known to man?
[–]Fuckyouelmacho 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
I've been living in a cave this entire time
[–]dbaazMaharashtra 27 points28 points29 points  (0 children)
It is hilarious, until you realise that his statements will be taken seriously by whatever morons are in charge and 90% of the populace and absolutely nothing will be done about the methane problem.
[–]ChudhPreet -11 points-10 points-9 points  (5 children)
the reason you are talking like this, is because of the western education, which has made you think ayurvedha is a scam, before you say anything, remember the foreign invasions ve made sure, we(indians) lose our real cultural practices and heritage, so strong that we never really had the opportunity to know about our real past, what you read as history is what they want you to know, so that you think your own heritage and culture as something inferior, try reading indian literatures where you get the picture of our real india, before these invasions, that came in trader's cloak. its the people, who make use of your ignorance for their benefit. between forget schizophrenia and those stuff, do you think the white revolution, really revolutionized milk industry or has made you buy more processed dairy products? have any idea what those cows go through in dairy industry? its not real milk what our indian breeds produce, they inject unnecessary harmones and the consumable healthy milk(lactorrhoea) gets replaced by a milk analogue(galactorrhoea), which is responsible for the side effects, more than this these cows are kept pregnant till they die, and please dont step into astrology, you, my friend, need real brains, to actually understand the extra ordinary science behind it. astrology is a science, in the olden days when people, especially indians, calcuated time and earth's location in this vast universe, by looking at the stars in the sky with their naked eye, and none of it, i mean none of it, is wrong, which is being proved and accepted by the western education as true! that too after 2000years. what i can say is that, the foreign invasions have affected india so deeply, that we are having specimens like you with us....who have no idea, what your actually history. before you make a statement, make sure, you know something about it...
[–]adwarakanathKarnataka 11 points12 points13 points  (3 children)

I don’t think so. I thought it was, until the astrology part. I lost it at that point.

The research paper says that the A-1 milk of Western cows is the root cause of many diseases, but the A-2 milk of Indian cows are a celestial remedy for all diseases
I don't know whats more funny: the sheer idiocy of that quote or the fact that tons of people will believe it if it comes out as a whatsapp forward.
Speaking of which...

Many people don't know this, but the proposed statute of Shivaji will include, in its foundation, special air cleaners to clean India's environment of the awful pollution caused by Western cattle.
[–]SuggestMeUsername 5 points6 points7 points  (0 children)
and the statue shall also reverse the effect of global warming as it is made with cement mixed with gobar that produces oxygen in the presence of sunlight.

[–]nili_hathi 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
Indian media is anticow, does anyone have a copy of the research paper?
The researchers might have compared completely opposite breed of cows like...
  • massively farting cows vs girly farting cows
  • cows who actually fart less
[–]kolikaal 2 points3 points4 points  (2 children)
There is unfortunately some truth to this. Grain based diet causes cows to release a lot of methane, which is a strong greenhouse gas. Diet of cows in India has less grains than in the West. Grain is highly subsidised in the West, and paddy is cheaper in India. Breeds over time were modified to suit specific needs and environment. Let the Indian farmers decide and let universities interact with them to produce whatever breed is more profitable for them.
[–]ChudhPreet -2 points-1 points0 points  (1 child)
What's the link between methane and ozone depletion?
[–]kolikaal 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
There seems to be an effect, which is being debated. Its main accepted danger is as a greenhouse gas.
[–]nordic34 2 points3 points4 points  (0 children)
Waiting for Khattar ji to ban western cows in Haryana.
[–]dulcoflex 8 points9 points10 points  (21 children)
I don't know this is like the 4th time it is posted here, but it is always ridiculed. Considering that these scientists are old fashioned and educated in Hindi or native language there is always a mistake in translation. I wonder if anyone has picked up the research paper to read it or just read a journalist's summary in the paper.
You might say what do you know about cows? Well I'll tell you, if you are ever around Wipro HQ area of Bangalore and want to visit my cows to give me a call (DM me). It is most certainly true that Western breeds of cow (Holfenstein, Jersey etc) eat and drink more and Indian cow (draught variety like ongole and velchuri) eat and drink less, obviously the more you eat the more flatulence there is. It is also true that Indian cow milk is richer in fat % and protein % although the literage is very little in comparison.
Now back to the Indian "Scientist" and the "Journalist" obviously we're seeing more and more ridiculous titles and articles, its just how the world is today. Also you guys can go back to arguing which is better Netflix or Amazon prime. /end rant
[–]_dexter 25 points26 points27 points  (17 children)
I will bite. Here is the paper cited in the article. Let me start with sh1t journalism - the title of the paper does not match with the author attributed in all. The author is Sangeeta Sachan and it has been attributed to a certain Hitesh Jani. Not only that, this paper is published in 2015.
First, "Indian Journal of Agriculture and Allied Sciences" is a journal without and standing in the academic community. Note that it was received and accepted in 5 days (19.08 to 24.08). That kind of speed is unheard of!
Second, here is the abstract from the paper
In Hindu culture cow has been considered as mother for all the creatures, this is not mythology but it is completely based on scientific aspects. Cow milk and its derivatives, cow urine & dung collectively known as Pancha Gavya are not only being used for sacred task, but it was also practiced in day to day life as well as for diseased conditions, Even in present era scientific utility of Panchagavya like anto carcinogenic, immunomodulator, brain cell rejuvenating effect etc. have been established. We had also very good dairy industry and animal husbandry in past; but unfortunately we left our culture and running behind western and so called scientific culture. We started to cross breeding of our deshi Indian cow with western cow and the result this is in front of us in the form of increasing life style disorders like diabetes mellitus, heart disease, hypertension, juvenile type of diabetes, pollution, impaired intelligence in children etc. Basically Indian cow (Bos indicus) having A2 types of milk and westrn cow (Bos Taurus) having A1 type of milk. This A1 type of milk – davil is the root cause for all the problems and to revert the original Indian cow breeding is the only solution for the situation.
Look at that condescending tone in the abstract? We "left our culture" for "so called western scientific culture". What kind of a scientist even argues with such a tone? There are punctuation marks and even spelling errors.
Not to mention, here's how that paper concludes
With all consideration
I must says Science with Sanskar!
Medicine with Maturttva
Economy with Adhyatm!
Than only the progress will be in real and true direction!!
This is not a research paper - it is a WhatsApp forward.
[–]Confuseyus 7 points8 points9 points  (4 children)
That's embarrassing. The "davil"? It's not the poor English that's annoying. Many researchers are from non-English speaking backgrounds and most reputed journals offer editing services (often free for researchers from poorer countries). It's the actual tone of the article that's ridiculous. This paper was obviously never peer-reviewed. It's not even an opinion piece, but a condensed form of the most anti-intellectual nativist butthurt. It's embarrassing for any journal to be publishing such bullshit.
[–]_dexter 10 points11 points12 points  (2 children)
It's not even an opinion piece
The parent commentator argues that is one. For me, it's a WhatsApp forward.
[–]Confuseyus 2 points3 points4 points  (0 children)
I agree with you! It's a nice way of putting it.
[–]kolikaal 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
it's a WhatsApp forward.
This should be a catchphrase. Meme-worthy.
[–]user_online 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
this is no paper.. this is manufactured bs with an agenda.. no research paper goes out like this..
[–]kolikaal 3 points4 points5 points  (0 children)
...this is not mythology but it is completely based on scientific aspects.
In the first sentence.
but unfortunately we left our culture and running behind western and so called scientific culture.
In the fourth sentence.
[–]dulcoflex -2 points-1 points0 points  (10 children)
Thanks for sharing the link to the paper, you are among the few people who have read it and now I read it too!
My observations are: 1. It is clear English is not native language of the papers author. She is also crude in saying that "farts caused hole in the ozone layer", it's clear this is just a project work for her and not representation of the "Absolute truth" 2. It is not a true science paper where in experiments are conducted and conclusion is drawn from results 3. It is more of an opinion piece although the author has linked it to several other papers 4. authors claims have neither been refuted or proved 5. who says urine can't cure certain diseases, after all we have extracted our current medicine from various sources including pus of animals! (only a closed mind person would deny it's possible outright) 6. the author is obviously a "fan" of the Indian cows, there is no denying the bias in the paper but also considering we do not know for what this paper was written her PhD or her masters degree etc I'd hold my opinion.
I am sure like everything else the Institute is not expected to silence a student and not publish her paper in the interest of free speech etc. The students or faculties words are not representation of the institute or the government's opinion. The hue and cry it has generated is unnecessary. Yeah, your bite doesn't really sting.
[–]_dexter 9 points10 points11 points  (9 children)
authors claims have neither been refuted or proved
Everything lies refuted until proven.
who says urine can't cure certain diseases, after all we have extracted our current medicine from various sources including pus of animals
You have to prove it can until then, it does not.
I'd hold my opinion.
What opinion? Nothing exists until proven - unicorns or golden horses.
the Institute is not expected to silence a student and not publish her paper in the interest of free speech
You can publish whatever you want. I will hold you up to your claims.
The hue and cry it has generated is unnecessary.
There is no hue and cry - there is ridicule and pity, aptly so. If you come up with a claim and don't provide a source, the ridicule is completely justified.
[–]dulcoflex -2 points-1 points0 points  (8 children)
So you will ridicule possible research that could potentially cure something? People will turn away from looking at potential cure because majority think it sounds ridiculous?
Edward Jenner cured cow pox from cows from anectodal evidence, anti-venom is developed from animals, insulin, thyroid hormones all synthesised from animals etc etc.
On second and third read it is very clear that he researcher is an amateur and doesn't deserve to be taken seriously. But laughing at the potential is something else.
[–]Confuseyus 2 points3 points4 points  (7 children)
Sorry man, but you're incredibly gullible. There's nothing special about the excreta of cows in a way excreta from other animals are not. Comparisons with vaccinations or antivenin or hormone treatments are completely misplaced because those therapies work very differently. Hell, the use of animal insulin has almost nothing to do with what's being said about cows here.
"The potential" is, forgive the pun, bullshit. Again, why should the potential be restricted to cows and not pigs or ants or any other animal? The person that wrote the article is no researcher. Becoming a researcher takes years of training and extensive knowledge combined with a mindset that's not easy to attain. Calling this person a researcher is to do the many researchers around the world a great disservice. This person is your typical anti-intellectual moron. So, I guess our current government will reward them with a faculty position in the ministry of AYUSH.
[–]dulcoflex -1 points0 points1 point  (6 children)
Well dried up excreta of cows and buffaloes are being used for fuel since a long time, so I beg to differ. Just because you in your privilege of LPG doesn't mean tribals etc are not using cow excreta and doesn't mean it's not special.
My point was for all animals not just cows, so again I am not sure.
You or general public is not the authority in deciding who is a researcher and who is not. I don't know about YUSH in AYUSH, but Ayurveda has a lot of preventative health benefits especially life style diseases. Don't just write them off. See the research they're doing in AVP, Coimbatore.
[–]Confuseyus 1 point2 points3 points  (5 children)
More shifting goalposts. We're not talking about fuel here, so yet another irrelevant point.
You think the excreta of all animals are worth searching for to find anti-cancer activity etc? Based on what?
I'm no authority on anything. No researcher would actually make a point on the basis of authority. But what's common to researchers is that they search systematically for evidence using a combination of observation and reasoning. Neither of which are present in this "researcher". So, while I don't claim to be an authority, I can say quite firmly that this person is far away from being a researcher. That's not me using any authority, but making a judgment based on characteristics displayed by the person.
Your basic argument can be watered down to "If something can exist, it must exist until we prove it doesn't". That's silly. If a researcher supposes something exists, then they must provide evidence for its existence. Evidence that is collected systematically rather than in the haphazard, anecdotal manner in which it is done here. It's no wonder that many scientists of Indian origin shy away from Indian congresses on science, given what some "researchers" peddle is this sort of nonsensical pseudo-science rather than the real deal.
No evidence that cow dung cures cancer? It's just because you haven't looked hard enough. Look harder. That's the equivalent of the argument here.
Preventative health benefits are in no way exclusive to Ayurveda. Suggesting exercise or a different diet isn't some brilliant idea that is exclusive to Ayurveda no matter what the Hindu right has been suggesting.
Simply put, these are not scientific ideas or even ideas that are well thought out and logical. It's just a smorgasbord of mythology mixed in with truisms and moving goalposts.
[–]dulcoflex 0 points1 point2 points  (4 children)
Like I said before, when I said it is worth exploring it's very generalised and not limited to cows only. Tomorrow news pop up that excreta of some xyz animal can cure disease, I am sure you'd celebrate it rather than mock it. My original point above was also stop dismissing thought that you have no experience of without having iota of knowledge about it. I still stand by the same thing.
If anything I keep wondering why these people are making claims without doing the scientific research. Its not difficult to measure which breed of cow releases more methane, I could probably do it with my own cows if I had the time and inclination or which milk is healthier.
You obviously don't understand the historical significance of animals in our culture not limited to cows and not limited to Hindus only. I also didn't suggest at all that preventative health benefits are limited ONLY to Ayurveda... isn't that goal post shifting? I even gave a source which is doing Clinical Laboratory testing for effectiveness of these medicines.
Also I have dismissed the paper in question in my previous comments and its also from Department of Geography not even Department of Animal Husbandry or Dairy.
[–]Confuseyus 0 points1 point2 points  (3 children)
If news pops up that excreta of any animal can cure disease, I would definitely not celebrate it, but look at the original sources with more scrutiny than anything. Frankly, anyone with a borderline understanding of biology would be extremely skeptical about any claims about excreta curing anything.
Please be my guest and conduct a study on methane emissions by breed.
Every culture holds certain animals in high regard. Again, this isn't some special relationship that is only held in India. More mythmaking going on here.
And since you specifically referred to the A in AYUSH, I don't think I was shifting the posts at all. Your response is disingenuous.
Are you saying that someone from the Department of Geography on other issues such as methane emissions? How do you know this? Don't answer this bit. I was only showing you a parallel of the sum total of your arguments here. You don't care for evidence. You are just holding on to blind hope and vague anecdotes. There's little to argue here.

as for my stand, I simply wanted to say that there is no discussion on the topic at hand (good or bad doesn't matter).. everyone is only coming here n passing sarcastic remarks. otoh, the comment above at least seemed to make some sense. it does not matter whether its right or wrong.. he/she is at least trying to urge people to go beyond the obvious funniness in the article.
now coming to ur link:
i read the article.. its a joke. its clear that it is a manufactured article just for the sake of creating the so-called news. and the first news piece related to this article came out in TOI. i can totally expect TOIlet paper to be having too many unpaid interns to do such a thing and get a promotion for it.
everthing u said about the news article , the 'scientific' article and the journal is correct. but no one here seems to question the journalism aspect of the entire drama. everyone is quick to judge that the paper is ridiculous and Ayurveda is a joke blah blah blah.. no one even has a passing thought that the media might be having a biased agenda out here..
i have worked with ayurveda doctors as well as scientists and they are nowhere like this. they totally understand all the scepticism and ironically they are struggling hard to prove ayurveda in the most scientfic way possible and not to mention they publish in reputed international journals including 'nature genetics'. a lot of well known western scientists too agree with them..
and that is why i m a bit wary about such news articles too..

Ayurveda Researcher Says Western Cows Destroying Ozone Layer Because They

  • While scientists across the globe have been struggling to find ways to curb climate change, a researcher of the Jamnagar-based Gujarat Ayurveda University has claimed that the belching of the Western cows adversely affects the ozone layer, causing the hole in it, but holy Indian cows are not responsible for global warming.
  • Dr Hitesh Jani, who has been given responsibility to conduct research by Gujarat Gauseva and Gauchar Vikas Board, in his research paper says that Western cows are responsible for global warming while glorifying cows of Indian origin.
  • These cows fart methane gas, so often that the ozone layer has got a hole," reads his research paper, 'Panchgavya Chikitsa: The Medicine of Millennium', which glorifies Indian 'gau' over Western Jersey cows.
  • The research paper says that the A-1 milk of Western cows is the root cause of many diseases, but the A-2 milk of Indian cows are a celestial remedy for all diseases.

Ayurveda Researcher Says Western Cows Fart To Destroy Ozone Layer, But Indian Cows Are Innocent

While scientists across the globe have been struggling to find ways to curb climate change, a researcher of the Jamnagar-based Gujarat Ayurveda University has claimed that the belching of the Western cows adversely affects the ozone layer, causing the hole in it, but holy Indian cows are not responsible for global warming.

Dr Hitesh Jani, who has been given responsibility to conduct research by Gujarat Gauseva and Gauchar Vikas Board, in his research paper says that Western cows are responsible for global warming while glorifying cows of Indian origin.
"In India, we prefer our original zero-maintenance desi cow, rather than fat Jersey cows that keep eating and drinking through the day, fall sick more often and have to be pumped full of antibiotics. These cows fart methane gas, so often that the ozone layer has got a hole," reads his research paper, 'Panchgavya Chikitsa: The Medicine of Millennium', which glorifies Indian 'gau' over Western Jersey cows. The research paper says that the A-1 milk of Western cows is the root cause of many diseases, but the A-2 milk of Indian cows are a celestial remedy for all diseases.
TOI/Representational Image
A-1 milk contain 7 amino acids, named BCM-7, which react with the human digestive system, internal organs and brain. It has been linked to Type-1 diabetes, heart disease, autism, and other non-communicable diseases, according to a veterinary scientist, Professor Keith Woodward of New Zealand. It also causes digestive problems in children, ear infections, bronchitis, and tonsillitis in adults, the paper says.
The paper also claims that A2 milk of the humped Indian cow is good for health and is more beneficial as it has micronutrients like cytokines and minerals which enhance the immune system.
He claims that A2 milk contains more magnesium and helps in the assimilation of calcium in the bones and is crucial for regular heart function.
