Virgins can't use tampons (self.badwomensanatomy)

I just remembered this one thanks to some family drama and unrelated period talk. My sperm donor (a doctor, by the way) once tried to sex-ed me, and while it was really unnecessary, he mentioned that "since virgins (he actually used a demeaning, patronizing word but it's hard to translate to english) can't use tampons anyway..." in some stupid context. I have heard that one before, and now I googled it and apparently in my country it seems like this myth exists/existed and is/was relatively common. I mean it's true that the mega sized tampons just don't quite fit (at least they didn't fit for me, I used smaller ones), I just don't know how these people picture a vaginal opening to believe this sort of BS.

Is this widespread in any way, or has it mostly died? Do you have stories about people believing this?

This used to be a common belief... Anne Frank wrote in her diary that she couldn't use menstrual products because there were only tampons, and she wasn't allowed to use those because she was a virgin. So she had to bleed into her underwear. :/

I don't understand it either. Penises are bigger than tampons, so even if ONE of them had to enter the vagina first, you'd think that you'd have to insert tampons before penises, rather than the other way around.
