Alot of the time on /r/soccer and occasionally on /r/reddevils i see alot of comments or posts talking about how we have "swayed away from our roots" and choose to spend unbelievably high amounts of money to be the best.
To get my opinion out of the way, I want to start by saying I am incredibly happy that the club chooses to spend whatever amount of cash we can to be the best.
This is the mentality alot of the best clubs around the world tend to have, bar a few. They will do whatever it takes to get to the top and this mentality is what we need.
For many years we have had the privilege of boasting the best manager in the world who would win us titles by getting the best out of average players. Of course he would break transfer records once in a while but it isn't close to the amount we spend today. Obviously Sir Alex doesn't last forever (No matter how much we wish he could) and managers like him come around only once in a generation.
Eras end and managers come and go but our owners have understood one thing, Manchester United are not a team meant to be fighting for Europe, we are meant to be fighting for the title year in year out.
Until a manager comes along who can win us titles without spending the cash we spend today, I have no problem with using 100m every transfer window to get the player we want. This is what separates us from the likes or Arsenal and Liverpool. We will do whatever it takes to be on the top even if it means breaking multiple transfer records in a transfer window.
Let the other teams hate. Let them call us money club. Let them laugh at our 50 million flops but when we win the title before them because we chose to stay at the top instead settling for top 4 then let them fuck back off to mediocre land.
Todays football is all about money. Money brings in World Class players who win titles and winning titles is what we do.
TL;DR- Until a manager like Sir Alex comes along again, we should be spending whatever amounts it takes to be best because at the top is where we belong.
