Most links here about tank debates show the poor logic and reasoning of most WW2 geeks when it comes to it. Werhbs go "Muh KT, thick armor > everything else" and Tankies/pseudoexperts go "T34 won the war, clearly is the best".
Im curious as to what SWS actually thinks IS the best tank. Im predicting a slew of "duh, the Sherman" but maybe youll be more varied. We'll see.
My take:
You cant ask "What is the best tank of WW2", it's too broad. You're effectively just asking "What was the best tank of 1945?" because that's when the best tanks of the WW2 period came in. But that's not fair to the other designs that preceeded them that were good for the time they existed in. So you need, I think, to go by year. What is the best rank of 40/41/42 etc.
You also need to differentiate between the "best" design and the most "important" design. The T34 is a very important tank, but it's crudely made, a 3 man crew, lacks a radio, has subpar AP rounds, etc.
With this in mind, if I were in a tank in WW2 and was given the choice of what tank to use, then by year, Id be in:
1940: Matilda - because the Germans cant beat me without dragging forward their AA guns. Slow as shit, laughable HE rounds, but hey, Im not gonna die.
1941: The T34 was a monster AT guns had trouble with. It suffers from problems as I said above, but since this was before adequate AT weapons had been invented to counter it, and its got a better gun than anyone Im facing, Ill put up with the bad ergonomics.
1942: Tiger. Again, ahead of the curve. AT weapons hadnt yet caught up to the armor this thing was sporting and it has the most powerful gun mounted on a tank to that point. Underpowered and less reliable, but I deem the upgrade to my firepower very much worth it at this stage.
1943: Ironically enough, the Tiger again. The Panther was an epic and combustible fail, Im still superior to the T34 and the Sherman is superior only in reliability and mobility - its better than the Panzer IV, but if Im not in a Panzer IV, that means little.
1944: So by now my Tiger is out of date because AT weapons can pierce my frontal armor and so can the Stalin tanks, so the unreliable engine becomes a bigger and bigger downside relatively speaking while the gun becomes less relatively impressive. The Panther would be perfect if it werent for the engine problem. Since Id rather have a tank of some kind than no tank at all because its broke down, Ill take the Easy Eight with its competitive gun, unbeatable reliability and modern comforts and ergonomics over those crude and uncomfortable Soviet tanks.
1945: The Centurion did not receive the upgrades that truly made it a magnificent tank until a couple years later and the IS3 is a crudely made and immensely unpleasant tank to be in despite the armament and armor. So despite its engine being underpowered, Ill take the Pershing for the gun, crew comfort and modern design features (also that wet ammo storage - would like to not burn to death).
