There's not much else to be said. /u/Calory is a piece of shit, and his thinly veiled attempt at teaching us a "lesson" was nothing other than a long-running scam. Good riddance.

The Only Thing Necessary for the Triumph of Evil is that Good Men Do Nothing.

The criticism of the mods' inability to enforce their own rules is valid.

As stated by a lot of other people in this thread, Calory's post clearly broke VII. Arguably he broke it even more, since he wasn't doing a giveaway, he was doing a "give me your items and I give them back randomly."

LET ME MAKE THIS CLEAR, WE HAD NO ROLE IN THIS, NOR DID WE APPROVE THIS!

But you DID have a role in this. You allowed a post that broke the subreddit rules. You enabled a scammer.

WE ALSO STATED THAT THIS USER WAS NOT A TRUSTED MM, AND THAT BY PARTICIPATING YOU ARE PUTTING YOURSELF AT RISK, AND THAT WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANYTHING THAT HAPPENS.

You're basically saying "THIS GUY BREAKS OUR RULES BUT WE ARE ALLOWING HIM TO DO IT. JUST BE AWARE."

This is terrible moderation.

Why even have rules if people are allowed to break them? Fact is, you enabled a scammer. And you failed to protect the more trusting members of your community.

Earn up to the fact that you, the mods, made a mistake. Instead of the cringy damage control you've been doing so far, which boils down to "it's your own fault".

Yes, you didnt approve it; but having it on front page with multiple posts, having no moderatorship on the post; is enough to make people trust; because people are naive, moderators need to defend them. If you dont think like this, then there's a no reason to have scammer list as well

This is supposed to be a nice safe place to trade. You tell people to use middleman in real money trades, couldn't you also warn people that it's not official? Like a real warning.

I dont find anyone faulty here; but moderator team either need some more help, or more strict policies. I still see lots of threads/comments that are against the rules, yet either you guys lack the power or dont have time to deal with it. And you know, Rule VII states that giveaways should be planned with a moderator before. Have you approved this secret santa? That's a big question

Hopefully that's a lesson for all, that people are not nice, there are lots of bad people and you should trust only specific people who has something to lose. Good luck to everyone in new trades, merry christmas!

[–]chrisychris-/id/chrisychris_[M] 1 ポイント2 ポイント  (4子コメント)

I have already explained it to you, we believed this was going to work out as much as everyone else did. There is nothing we can do outside of middlemanning every single trade on a huge giveaway like this, which means we're going to end up doing the giveaway anyways, or banning any projects like this from being created which you said you don't want that happening. What do you suggest?

[–]sajuukxhttp://steamcommunity.com/id/sajuukx/ 12 ポイント13 ポイント  (1子コメント)

Greetings again; you have explained this to me in the comments; but this announcement (if approved by you) have no info regarding these issues.

You should state that certain things will change, especially about your trust level regarding giveaways, you should state that not-removing (or publicly seriously warning) this giveaway was faulty.

And also telling people that these are just virtual items that will disappear in 2 years is a ballsy and unprofessional announcement in my opinion. If this announcement was pointing the issues that you had regarding this giveaway; instead of slightly evading the moderator team from responsibility; i couldve just written the last paragraph of my comment.

You have my respect chris; nothing personal here

And also telling people that these are just virtual items that will disappear in 2 years is a ballsy and unprofessional announcement in my opinion.

We are not professionals, we're not emotionless either. For someone who says what you're saying is not personal, you've taken the joke statement a little bit too seriously. The post's purpose still exists without this sentence so do not pay too much attention to it.

You should state that certain things will change, especially about your trust level regarding giveaways, you should state that not-removing (or publicly seriously warning) this giveaway was faulty.

This is me saying that future, big projects like these will have a warning saying it's not being run by moderators or middle-men.

My guess is more help for you guys! Idk anything about Reddit moderating or anything of that sort and have the utmost respect for you guys doing the job but I imagine it's time consuming and I'm sure you guys could use some help. I also understand that ppl want these types of events to go on but I would limit it to giveaways only. Clearly no one..no one..should be trusted to hold the community's items except you guys that are there for that purpose. This isn't anyone's fault but Calory. We can only take away what we've learned and apply it to how we will proceed in the future!

In the side bar of this subreddit, rule VII states that all giveaways must go through the moderators. The linked post also states that in any giveaway, the lot of items will go to a mod/trusted middleman in order to ensure the items are delivered safely.

Is Secret Santa not a giveaway? In this case, it is a pay-to-enter giveaway, but a giveaway nonetheless. It says in the rules that giveaways not approved by the mods will be removed, so by logical deduction, one would conclude the mods approved this giveaway as well.

Though you stated he was not a trusted MM and the mods were not backing his SS, why is it that I wasn't made aware of this? I checked his recent posts and no where do I see a stickied comment stating what you stated. Should it be my job to vet this guy myself? It looked like 100s of people had joined in, so it should've been made very obvious that this guy was not trusted by the moderators, or he shouldn't have been allowed to host such an event at all.

Although it's not any single party's fault, the mods are absolutely not absolved of responsibility of this. I view this as a real setback for the mods for allowing this to happen.

[–]BlazinscoNot My Gamertag 3 ポイント4 ポイント  (6子コメント)

While I do agree it was the mod team's fault, it isn't their problem

Calory wanted the mods to approve the giveaway, that didn't work. One could assume they didn't like Calory's terms.

Then, they stated that it was not approved and enter at your own risk, if I had seen this, I would have stayed as far away as possible, but I ended up in the same place either way, lucky me.

It was the own ignorant people's fault they got scammed, imo. But in return, Calory is lower than shit for doing this.

On a different note, I think this can be a teaching lesson not only to the community in general (trust no one), but also to you moderators. I hold a high level of respect for each and every one of you moderators who volunteer day in and day out for the betterment of this subreddit, but you really need to keep these projects under your control (or at least the items). Too many fakes/frauds/scammers/assholes out there that will diminish this server if not controlled, at any means possible.

Just be cautious and keep your guard up. But don't turn your back on on entire community because of the actions of one shit head. =/

[–]wictor1992wictor1992 0 ポイント1 ポイント  (2子コメント)

I did well above 500 trades here on reddit and collected a lot different experiences. What I can tell is, thats no joy to trade with someone who suspects everyone of scamming or ripping him off. And thats what I expect to happen now. People will become more careful, maybe even pathetic. And it destroys the nice and friendly trading atmosphere when you have to send proof every time because someone doesn't even believe you to have the item you're offering. But maybe I'm completely wrong. Time will show :)

[–]Fox--Kit 0 ポイント1 ポイント  (0子コメント)

That's true. I definitely feel that. My brother lost a trade the other day because his Internet was fitzing and making it hard to get the trade option up and the guy got skittish thinking it was a scam somehow and left. =/

I'm optimistic though. I think people will be more careful but will still trade as often as before. People will still be swell people and trade on good faith, and power will still be pricks and scam people out of their cherished goods.

[–]lusciouslou 0 ポイント1 ポイント  (0子コメント)

[–]Czekskii -2 ポイント-1 ポイント  (1子コメント)

honestly if a pay to enter giveaway not approved by Mods doesnt sound fishy idk what does. Still Mods are to busy manipulating prices to actually protect anyone's best interest on here, and let him steal from everyone. I would honestly not find it out of place if some mods were in on it. makes no sense that they leave this go on the front page when its grossly against the rules. Mods should have to pay everyone back... screw them

[–]Farhanhmhttp://steamcommunity.com/id/Rectifiedninja 0 ポイント1 ポイント  (0子コメント)

I was supposed to get the parallax from him. Downvote me all you want.

That's the price you pay for being so trusting. If it was literally any other day of the year you would have absolutely said no to his idea. Why does Christmas change that?

You guys trust the mods to stop this. The mods who foster an environment enabling players to break the ToS of Rocket League, and that also do nothing as site wide Reddit rules are broken daily. If you believe the mods would have done anything to stop this, you're a fool.

[–]chrisychris-/id/chrisychris_[M] 4 ポイント5 ポイント  (8子コメント)

Yes because the ToS is the word of the land correct?

Psyonix is opened to a plethora of steam accounts, PS and Xbox accounts who openly trade items for money. There has only been one instance of someone being banned for it, and even then it was clouded in uncertainty because he may have been a cheater. If they truly wanted to hold Rocket League's ToS, accounts would be banned by the hundreds by now. Especially months after it was introduced.

I am very familiar with Reddit's rules and no, we do not break them with the witchhunting you accuse the subreddit of. Not once has the release of personal information of someone's identity, or call-to-actions to harass a user, have encouraged or allowed on this subreddit. Keep reaching dude.

[–]lusciouslou 0 ポイント1 ポイント  (7子コメント)

If you break one rule, what's stopping you from breaking others? The rules are put in place for a reason, and the lack of punishment isn't an excuse to continue breaking those rules. If they change the rules, than real world trading is fine. As is, it shouldn't be encouraged.

You don't advocate witch hunting, but you allow it. There was a post the other day about a player wrongfully accused of being a scammer. That player got threatening messages, and has had other players refusing to talk to him. The system is ripe for abuse. He had to post proof to clear his name. If that isn't witch hunting, I'm not sure what is. There's a reason mob justice isn't prevalent in developed nations. It's a corrupt system.

[–]chrisychris-/id/chrisychris_ 1 ポイント2 ポイント  (5子コメント)

Because this is a market. You're ranting about a market not following rules that are not enforced or encouraged; why?

Posting scammers with evidence allows for awareness that would otherwise be ignored. Funny how you talk about one post and disregard every other post that has worked well when they warn about a scammer.

[–]lusciouslou -1 ポイント0 ポイント  (4子コメント)

That is the overall philosophy behind the justice system. It's a bad system if it punishes the guilty 98% of the time, and punishes the innocent 2% of the time. The idea is to limit the amount of times the innocent get punished. The system this sub has is has no protection for that. That is a system ripe for abuse.

[–]chrisychris-/id/chrisychris_ 1 ポイント2 ポイント  (3子コメント)

And what are you suggesting? Have everything kept private? That doesn't help anyone in an open market.

[–]lusciouslou -1 ポイント0 ポイント  (2子コメント)

Don't allow the public announcement of scammers. You can update the scammer list. When someone creates a thread about a suspected scammer, the folks in that thread becomes a mob. That suspect becomes ostracized. Once you allow for people to publicly shame others so easily, the system isn't working as it should.

Advocate intelligence. I've been scammed on other games plenty of times. My response is always the same, "Wow, I was stupid for falling for that." In most online video games the scammers never get punished. They don't get punished because unless they admit to it, there is never enough indisputable proof. Without a way to track it on the back-end, there is no way to absolutely prove it. I'm sure most of the people who are accused of being scammers are scammers, but "proof" can be fabricated. On steam I could change my name to anything to frame a person. Very easily in fact, considering steam allows you to change your name whenever you want, to whatever you want. You can even change your name to one that's already taken,

[–]chrisychris-/id/chrisychris_ -1 ポイント0 ポイント  (1子コメント)

You want us to choose whose guilty and innocent, and then you say there's never indisputable proof? Isn't that a bit contradictory?

[–]lusciouslou -1 ポイント0 ポイント  (0子コメント)

You're right, the scammer list might also have to go. I will admit I was just trying to appease people who want some kind of retribution for those that want the list. Trying to make everyone happy as it were.

I'll correct myself. I don't want you choose who is guilty or innocent. I don't think it's your place to do so. You don't, and can't, posses that power. I also don't think it should be some random person who wants to make a public claim against another.

Whether it's truth or not, this sub shouldn't be a place to accuse others of anything.

Unless you want it to be, but you have to be okay with the potential for abuses that comes with it. Again there is a reason that in developed nations there is the assumption that a suspect is innocent until proven guilty. Not guilty because one person claimed them to be.

Yea I have seen these mods giving random posters a hard time due to other random poster making baseless accusations. Yet they can't smell the shit under their noses because their time is wasted investigating "price manipulating" LOL and the all important "he insulted me". Way to drop the ball team!! Bravo!

That's the price you pay for being so trusting

No, people shouldn't be scammers. They need to pay a price. Why would the "nice" and "goodhearted" people need to pay a price while the most cancerous people get protected by people like you? You AND the scammer are literally the cancer of the world

The mods warned people that he was not supported, and not an approved middle man.

A man is standing at the edge of the grand canyon promising that if you jump there will be a net there. The park authorities tell you that this guy is not affiliated with the canyon, and they have no idea who he is. Do you jump trusting the man? Or would you avoid him?

I 100% agree that people shouldn't be scammers, but when people refuse to use their common sense, there will always be scammers. It's up to you to be smart enough to not fall for their tricks, especially one so stupid.

Both parties are at fault. Also death threats, and insults are never the best way to argue with someone......

old lady with a bag: someone asks if she needs help and she hands her bag over, and the person runs away with the bag. Its stealing and there is really no blame on the victim. Its horrible people being horrible to nice people that don't deserve it.

How is that different? The lady did something she was not forced to do, and trusted someone they had no reason to trust. People shouldn't scam and people shouldn't fool so easy. The people who got scammed need to take some responsibility for what happened.

Your example isn't even that different. Add that the old woman was told before that this guy is a unknown to security, and in no way affiliated with the park she is standing in.
