Obama's foreign policy legacy will be stupidity, chaos, and idiotic bias. Congratulations Obama, you're now also a hypocrite, talking about overturning decades of precedent as a bad thing for Trump while doing it yourself.

What a sellout, and a liar.

Something tells me that if Hillary had won, he'd veto the shit out of this proposition, but because Trump won, Obama is going full scorched earth on the Middle East, to make sure Trump won't be the one to bring peace.

Obamas been fucking up in the middle east since day one (Lybia, Iraq)

He will be remember like Judas is remembered. Hope the American Jews will stop givingmoney to ass party.

Sen Schummer remember that after this decision, you represent an anti-israeli party.

What a stupid way to go. Obama, you failed to make peace between Israel and the Palestinians, and under your rule, you led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands accross the Middle East, which created a crisis in Europe and you also brought war to Europe, between Russia and Ukraine, which you failed to stop.

So how do you finish your term? By shoving a middle finger at Israel's face, an ally to you and another one of your failiures.

This decision is not going to promote peace in any way or form, and we all know that. This is just you, trying to be an asshole to Netanyahu, which you hate, and I can say I like the guy, but I don't understand why I should suffer, because you don't like that guy.

Obama, you need to be hit by a Bus asap.

Obama cozys up to Cuba and Iran while dictating to Israel and UK how they should run their countries. The guy is a joke

A bit unfair to criticise Obama for the problems in the Middle East which ultimately boil down to decisions made by people decades before he was born.

Obama took down Qaddaffi, helped the rebels in Syria rise (now led by al-Quaeda), support Turkey, which supported ISIS, tried to expand NATO into Ukraine, which led to the war in Crimea and Donbass, supports Saudi Arabia's bombings on Yemen, made deals with Iran expanding their freedom of action, gave America a weak and evil face in the Middle East and now he is helping the struggle to screw up my life so my government will have to conform to terrorists.

And I am not a random anti-Western guy with "Bush did 9/11" bullshit, I am a supporter of the West and an opposer to Russia's 19th century policies.

I think the issues in Syria ultimately come down to failures by a lot of parties - general inaction to get involved and a failure to prevent what started as legitimate protests turning into what it is now.

[–]siredwardreturnsUnited States of America

If we would have not supported the rebels, I guarantee the war would be long over. Hundreds of thousands would be living.

I'm not so sure it would be over but the proxy war between the Russian-supported Syrian government and coalition-supported rebels certainly does not help.

He was not powerless but he chose the Chamberlain path and he will be measured by history in the same way.

I really liked Obama for lots of things, but his policies about Israel are the worst one ever seen.

Every previous president has let anti-Israel resolutions through. Obama has been fine for Israel, it's partisan propaganda that labels him as anti-Israel.

I know I'm going to get downvoted but I think this is a good thing.

Settlement-building is by far the biggest issue people have with Israel. Perhaps if it was stopped people would look more favourably on Israel as a whole and not simply at this one issue.

As if this will do anything also even if they stop building they will list kvetch about some over shit

Settlements are the biggest stick people have to beat Israel - get rid of the stick and there's little else to reasonably criticise it for.

That's a good theory mabey in a perfect world. But in the real world this will not solve anything

Well I don't think it can do much more harm at least trying.

the way is wrong, obama did the game of the ones that says dems are against Israel, and repeating it again and again makes it true. There is the big risk that the millenials (not only the minority that makes a lot of noise) will be very very critic with Israel... and the millenials of today are the majority of tomorrow.

This decision will ultimately make the settlements grow. The left and center in Israel will be powerless to stop it. The public is now incited against the UN, which passed a decision makes avoiding peace for the Palestinians easier than ever.

It will lead to settlement expansion and might lead to further political polarization in Israel and even to a civil conflict. The people who will suffer the most will be the Palestinians.

I'm a left leaning American Jew, but between this and running Hillary Clinton for President, I've never identified less with the Democratic Party. And they didn't even have the stones to vote for it. If you're going to tell an ally to fuck off, you might as well just sack up and go all out. Now when this resolution proves disastrous, they'll all just point out "well we didn't vote for it

This was an inevitable outcome. The settlements have been an open, weeping sore for decades. One can only flaunt the law for so long before one is eventually called out on it.

Do I think Israel's government will stop building? No, probably not.

Do I think Israel's government will proceed with 'legalizing' (under Israeli law) many settlements? Yes, most likely.

Do I think the incoming US administration will support those endeavors? Yes, almost certainly.

That doesn't change the math, though. The settlements are illegal, have always been illegal, and will continue to be illegal, regardless of what Israeli law says and regardless of what the incoming US administration says.

The rest of the world knows it. Many Israelis acknowledge it. And at long last the UN Security Council has passed a resolution recognizing the fact.

You do know how the land was gained in the first place, right? A war of self defense

This is a flawed understanding of the reality on the ground. The UN is a tool that has been used since 1974 as manipulation by the Palestinians who failed to defeat Israel millitarily but are still eager to defeat it.

A Palestinian state will be established only with negotiations, Israel, whether it wants or not, cannot dismantle the settlements, without an agreement.

If you want to say "I don't give a shit, they're illegal", it doesn't mean you are going to bring peace, because such actions, like this decision, are exactly what strenghtening the far-right in Israel, who now say "the UN is a joke, we don't need to fear it anymore, we will proceed to annex the West Bank".

This decision is a message to the avarage Israeli, that the UN doesn't want peace, and that there is no reason to try.

It will eventually lead to an Israeli civil war, and if this is what you want, you can't say you want it for peace or out of moral reasons, you want it only because you want fake justice, for a nation that failed to destroy Israel with guns and now want to at least humiliate it with papers.

Today the UN killed the peace process, forcing a solution with no regards to the actions of the PA which do not wish to negotiate. Israel will now build with no regards to UN and the world. The Palestinian state is dead.
