Trump uses Berlin attack to argue for Muslim registry: ‘All along, I’ve been proven to be right — 100% correct’

President-elect Donald Trump emerged from his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Fla., on Wednesday afternoon to briefly address questions from reporters about this week’s deadly attacks in Europe. Trump was asked whether Monday’s violence in Germany and Turkey had caused him to “rethink or reevaluate” his plan to create a Muslim registry or a ban on Muslim immigration. “You know my plans,” Trump replied.

Bizarre North Pole temperatures cap off year of record-setting warmth

Christmastime conjures up beautiful images of the frozen North Pole, but if warming trends continue unabated, Santa’s home will look very different in years to come. The Global Forecast System, a weather prediction system run by the U.S. National Weather Service, forecasts that the temperature at the North Pole could inch close to the melting point of 32 degrees Fahrenheit on Thursday — nearly 50 degrees warmer than normal. Zack Labe, a doctoral student who focuses on the global climate system at the University of California, Irvine, said Wednesday that a series of storm systems — which are moving up through the North Atlantic Ocean and off the east coast of Greenland — are drawing warm and moist air into the Arctic — especially near the North Pole.

Police have identified the man they believe made off with a pot of gold from an armored truck parked on a busy New York City street in broad daylight, and are now appealing to the public to help track down the thief. Surveillance footage caught Julio Nivelo, 53, allegedly grabbing an 86-pound bucket of gold flakes valued at $1.6 million from the back of an armored truck parked on West 48th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues in midtown Manhattan about 4:30 p.m. on September 29, police said.

Turkey and Russia probe slaying of envoy in Ankara gallery

Investigators from Turkey and Russia hunted for clues Tuesday in the assassination of Russia's ambassador to Turkey in front of stunned onlookers at a photo exhibition in Ankara. A team of 18 Russian investigators and foreign ministry officials arrived in Turkey and began inspecting the art gallery where the shooting of Andrei Karlov took place. Central to the joint Turkish-Russian investigation is whether Mevlut Mert Altintas, a member of Ankara's riot police squad, planned the attack alone.

'Smog refugees' struggle to escape 'Airpocolypse' in Beijing

This season the air pollution in China — stemming from power plants, factories, vehicles and other sources — has grown so bad during the past five days that it has put the safety of half a billion people at risk. Since polluted areas of north and central China were put under red alert from Friday until Wednesday by authorities, the haze has thickened, impacting everyday life and causing tens of thousands of "smog refugees" to evacuate. On Friday, Xinhua, an official news agency in China, reported that road construction has been halted, several schools have suspended classes and residents have been advised to remain indoors until conditions improve.

Mexican Fireworks Market Explosion Likely Not Terrorism

The series of explosions that devastated a popular open-air fireworks market in Mexico Tuesday was not being linked to terrorism, officials said. “Everything was destroyed, it was very ugly and many bodies were thrown all over the place, including a lot of children,” 24-year-old Angelica Avila, whose brother, a fireworks salesman, was inside the market at the time and suffered burns, told Reuters. Eruviel Avila, the governor of the State of Mexico, pledged that he would find and punish whoever was responsible, according to Reuters.

Bolivia says airline, pilot responsible for plane crash

A Bolivian government investigation into the plane crash that killed dozens of Brazilian soccer players last month concluded that a Bolivian airline and pilot were directly responsible, Public Works Minister Milton Claros said on Tuesday. The pilot, Miguel Quiroga, was one of 71 people killed when a plane operated by the Bolivia-based charter apparently ran out of fuel and crashed on a wooded hillside near the Colombian city Medellin. Quiroga was also a co-owner of the airline.

Generation X-Soviet: young Russians conflicted over past

Just when Irina Chubkovets was coming into the world, the country her parents and grandparents had lived in was slipping out of it. Chubkovets was born in the provincial Russian city of Bryansk on December 25, 1991, the day the last leader of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, resigned and the hammer and sickle flag atop the Kremlin was replaced by the Russian tricolour. The iconic moment drove the final nail into the coffin of over 70 years of Soviet rule and opened a new era of uncertainty that left an indelible mark on the world map and the people of Russia.

Alabama official apologizes for chopping public park tree for Trump rally

An Alabama mayor’s chief of staff has apologized for cutting down a giant tree from a city park in Mobile so it could be used as a backdrop for President-elect Donald Trump’s “thank you” rally at a nearby football stadium. Colby Cooper, Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson’s top aide, admitted he was “overzealous” in fulfilling a request from Trump’s advance team ahead of Saturday’s event. The 50-foot cedar tree was cut down at the city’s Public Safety Memorial Park on Friday and taken to Ladd-Peebles Stadium, placed behind the podium was decorated with Christmas ornaments.

Germany’s refugee policy under scrutiny after Berlin attack

Tensions over Germany’s large migrant community reignited after authorities detained an asylum-seeker from Pakistan in connection with the deadly truck attack that killed at least 12 and injured nearly 50 at a bustling Christmas market Monday. Chancellor Angela Merkel, who has faced criticism for opening Germany’s borders to more Middle Eastern refugees than any other European nation during the current crisis, said it must be assumed that the incident outside Berlin’s Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church was a “terrorist attack” and was quick to acknowledge the possibility that an individual who entered the country under the guise of seeking refuge might be responsible. “I know that it would be particularly hard for us all to bear if it were confirmed that a person committed this act had asked for protection and asylum in Germany,” Merkel said on Tuesday.

Last group to be evacuated from Syria's Aleppo within hours

The evacuation of the last remaining civilians and fighters from the last rebel-held sliver of eastern Aleppo will be completed in the coming hours, the Red Cross and state TV said Thursday, as 4,000 people were evacuated overnight and more gunmen and civilians braved freezing temperatures to leave. The evacuations came as Syrian President Bashar Assad said his forces' achievements in Aleppo are a "major step on the road to wiping out terrorism" and should pave the way toward ending Syria's civil war. The evacuations were set in motion last week after Syria's opposition agreed to surrender its last footholds in eastern Aleppo.

The Porsche 911 Turbo S Is the Powered Exoskeleton Drivers Need Now

You’re at the wheel of the 2017 Porsche 911 Turbo S. A few laps around a racetrack and there it is: the feeling that Porsche engineers, with all their actuators and algorithms, have been edging us closer and closer to machinery that’s less a car than a man-machine interface. A devastating performer with the numbers to match: Zero to 60 in under three seconds, standing quarter-mile in just over 10 seconds, and a lap around the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 7:18, as Porsche estimated earlier this year (when Nürburgring officials barred unrestricted laps). Porsche Turbos have always been sexy in the way a 14-cylinder, 100,000-hp Wärtsilä-Sulzer RTA96-C diesel engine is.

Police are more likely to kill black men, study finds

A new analysis of death certificates calculates that black males were almost three times more likely than whites to die at the hands of U.S. police, but the study fails to fill gaping holes in national law-enforcement reports about deadly use of force. “We’re really good at counting all sorts of things, but not when police departments kill citizens,” epidemiologist Cassandra Crifasi said in a phone interview. The new report online December 20th in the American Journal of Public Health relies on what she described as “poor” death-certificate data on police killings.
