Nice work, OP.

Here's a link to the AFL drama for anyone who missed it, given it's important context for this debacle.

The popularity of the Smith thread was enough to rate a mention in the MSM, so deleting it is a pretty big step.

The popularity of the Smith thread was enough to rate a mention in the MSM, so deleting it is a pretty big step.

So I read through the AFL drama and still don't get why the post was removed.

/r/sports mods were a bit sensitive to references to that incident and being brigaded by Australians.

Having a thread about an Australian cricketer at the top, populated by quite a few people riled up over the AFL incident - and, to be fair, being inclined to shitpost in the thread and either obliquely or directly reference the AFL incident - apparently caused the mods some angst.

It's worth noting that /r/cricket is very liberal on shitposting, but /r/sports mods may have taken that as an attack on that sub.

Isn't banning Australians from shitposting basically racist? They can't help themselves.

as a /r/nba shitposter, i am puzzled at the mere thought of getting banned for shitposting about sports

Yeah the specific sports subreddits are leagues better than /r/sports in terms of both quality and shitposting.

seriously tho, prety sure most sports subs lean towards shitposts and general fun with a generous serving of salt. /r/nba is my favourite, such a chill place (well, most of the time). /r/nfl hates fun tho

The /r/NFL preseason roast threads were the greatest things I've ever seen.

[–]DedicatedColdAlpaca316cats shill, #zekeissheik 16

/r/nba tried, but they kind of weren't very good (sans the supersonics roast). mods didn't realise /r/nba is on permaroast mode 24/7, every thread is a roast thread

But did you know the 73-9 Golden State Warriors blew a 3-1 lead in the NBA Finals?

[–]gigantic_meaty_balls 50 ポイント51 ポイント  (6子コメント)

A lot of people come from 4chans /sp/ board where shitposting is taken to a ridiculous level. /sp/ shitposters gave the janitors on 4chan a really hard time and apparently even caused one of them to quit because of the stress/time commitment.

One guy who got banned even paid Tyrone to make a vid

Ooh Tyrone makes everything better, same as that other guy.

Yeaaaah.... /sp/ is a great place but we really did weaponize shitposting. Amazing fun when everyone randomly decided they love a sport like curling out of nowhere.

[–]EggCouncilCreeperI like my popcorn extra-salty 18

Quote unquote brigading too. As far as I'm aware, there was no formal agreeance from the /r/AFL users to go over there, it just sort of happened when we got a peek at what Jeepy Boy had been sending the /r/AFL mods

Thank you, I think I get it now. So because of the past, the r/sports mods weren't going to deal with deleting a shit ton of comments that were shitposting in that thread and instead nuked it.

Real shame that neither side can act like adults in this situation because that catch was dope.

Seems like the Aussies and others on r/cricket just love to shitpost, rile up and troll the mods on r/sports and those mods took the bait

It's not really that bad at /r/Cricket really, this one did get out of hand though. Shame, it was a bloody good catch.

Really, to completely remove the (at the time) #1 post on r/all, because some people in the comments were referencing memes from their native subreddit, is just straight up childish and really reflects poorly on the moderators over at r/sports.

To then follow that up with blanket bans on any and all cricket related coverage in the following days is just petty.

I wouldn't be surprised.

r/afl is the one of the only subreddits i frequent on a regular basis and the main r/sports mod involved in that drama was pretty childish.

This is the modmail that started the whole thing off

There was also an instance of him finding a comment from a regular subscriber of /afl on a completely unrelated subreddit where they were talking about their mental health just to comment: 'lol'

I could not give less of a shit about the AFL or cricket but I've seen plenty of sweet gifs from them both, including the one referenced here. It's straight up cringey that the mods of that sub would interfere with anything outside of, idk, somebody posting an esports video.

What really grinds my gears is that the thin skinned pansies only lash out against meme-ish posts from non-american sports. Here's an example.

There was some thread about interesting facts from random sports and the top was that the fucking Warriors blew a 3-0 lead or something like that. That was not removed. However a comment about cricketing legend Don Bradman's extraordinary average of 99.94 was removed.

The top post yesterday was some bullshit low effort shit called RefLife and the comment section was full of stupid memes. No action.

The cunts also do not reply to any messages asking about why you were banned. Or any messages in general.

I'm a bit confused. Cricket AND AFL are "sports". We learn them in school. USA people learn baseball, tball, merican footy, etc in school.

I mean sure just ban all the rest of our cool sports, and just have /sports for USA sport (and sports played on the reg in the USA), and make a new sub for "everywhereBUTtheusasports" - where everyone BUT the usa can post their sports.

That said though it feels very childish to kick people off because of their love of shitposting AND sport. I understand the shitpost bit but the sport bit? Nah.

(sorry if this goes against grandstanding I don't participate very often.)

This is complicated drama. On the one hand, the mods for the sports sub do seem like whiney babies. On the other hand, a lot of those cricket folks have a real complex about American sports leagues. So that's pretty entertaining.

Think its been brewing for quite some time with the sports mods having constant issues with non-american sports. Constantly mis-tagging or misnaming them other sports. They also refuse to acknowledge AFL as a professional sports. However widening the issue to cricket has just made it a bigger issue as it opens up to a lot of people from wider nations. As said cricket is the 2nd biggest sport in the world

The other thing is that a lot of the folks at /r/Cricket are tired of the inevitable mocking posts when a Cricket-related thread shows up in /r/Sports by non-fans (often Americans).

I understand that frustration but such threads on /r/Sports were always a good chance to introduce newbies to the game so it kinda sucked that the thread went the way it did.

Well roughly 120% of India worships cricket. So I think it's a pretty safe bet.

Yeah, they eat, sleep and drink it. India's obsession cannot be understated in my experience.

It's more my lack of knowledge of American Football talking there (am Australian, will not stop hearing about the bloody cricket for the next six months). I wasn't sure if it had some huge following in eastern europe or something.

Yeah significantly more. India alone puts it way more than than American Football

Yeah Cricket is the second most popular sport in the world with an estimated 2.5 billion fans.

It's the 2nd most popular sport on the planet. Also banned from /r/sports so go figure.

It looks to me like the mods are just overly sensitive, though, not that they hate non-American sports.

Only because whenever a moment in the Aussie sport happens and gets posted to /r/sports the Americans start circlejerking about how NFL athletes are the best or how confusing Cricket is when it isn't that much different to baseball.

Where would you suggest a burger like myself start if they wanted to check the sport out and see if they liked it?

Have a look at r/cricket and check out some Of the streams. Matches are starting to be played now as it's cricket season again

Having a chip on our shoulders about anything to do with America is a bit of an Aussie tradition.

Ok, I understand why Canada has a thing about the U.S., but why on earth would Australia have a chip on their shoulder? We're not even in the same hemisphere.

Mid-90s diplomatic incident involving a ten-year old and a collect call.

Because seppos are fuckwits is why.

In all seriousness it's just because talking shit in general is a very Aussie thing (see: tall poppy syndrome) and Americans react the most to this sort of behaviour anecdotally.

...Also, ya know, they're idiots.

[–]Red_of_HeadBecause Adjunct, it is buttery 3

It's funny because the way I've heard Americans refer to tall poppy syndrome is the complete opposite to the way we do.

I don't think "tall poppy syndrome" is really a phrase that we use. I think an American would be more likely to refer to crabs in a bucket. There's also the old saying about how the tall nail gets hammered down, but that means something a bit different.

Of major concern was the fact that U.S. military pay was considerably higher than that of the Australian military and U.S. military uniforms were seen as more appealing than those of the Australians. This resulted in U.S. servicemen not only enjoying greater success in their pursuit of the few available women but also led to many Americans marrying Australian women, facts greatly resented by the Australians.

Hahahaha. Ok, come on. That's hilarious.

I also liked the part about the Americans habit of "caressing in public" (i.e. PDA) being offensive. I would have expected Australia to be more sexually liberated than the U.S., but I guess you guys were pretty close with the U.K. and they're pretty stoic.

I think New Zealand has more cause to dislike us since, when a similar event happened there, it was caused by US servicemen being racist sacks of shit.

Apparently in N.Z ,Australia and the U.K during WWII, a lot of the local soldiers and public were shocked and appalled at the racist treatment of black US servicemen by their white counterparts. For Australia that is surprising, given that Australia was incredibly racist back in the day.

We speak the same language so it's easier to be hostile with one another

Our reasons probably arent that dissimilar to Canada's. American cultural invasion, little brother syndrome, the kardashians.

I should add they went and locked several no American sports threads including one of mine which was a highlight reel of the recent rugby union autumn internationals

Yep, no oversight of mods or punishment for them stepping out of line. Happening a lot recently, although I can't comment on the other bits according to the mods in this subreddit. Soviet Union was a bastion of free speech compared to Reddit atm.
