The reality is that they should at least not care if trans women are performing femininity, because apparently it was designed by men, for men.
At best, they should be applauding it, because if men are doing it, then it takes all the heat of 'real wimminz', who can then wear blue jeans, Birkenstocks and plaid shirts.

I agree, but I think their theory is that trans women are somehow stealing womanhood away from baby-making women, and by doing so continuing to reinforce their male definition of femininity.

I don't think there's an actual theory; I think it's just basic unexamined socialisation programmed into them which makes them see 'men in dresses' as disgusting and wrong.
They'll leap through various hoops to paint it as something else - as some 'Gen Crit' analysis - but the reality is that they're just slaves to their cis socialisation, going 'ew' at something outside of cultural norms.

I hesitate to fling the same accusations at them as they do at us - specifically, that our stance is the result of knee-jerk reactions and "feelings" - but you may be right. I tend to approach things more from the angle that their thinking may be wrong, but they are thinking.

That's very fair of you.
Whatever the case, it's clearly rooted in some kind of bigotry. There shouldn't actually be a reason to give a shit if 'men' dress femininely. They'll frequently claim that's a good thing, when it's convenient to do so - and then in the next breath insult a trans woman for dressing stereotypically.
