[DISCUSSION] James Rodriguez transfer (self.reddevils)

What does everyone else think of the Rodriguez transfer? Apparently he's gotten a UK visa recently and wants to leave Real Madrid. Chelsea seem to be leading the race but I really want us to hijack their bid as revenge for the Pedro bid hahahaha. Do you all think we could do with a player like Rodriguez with our midfield depth? Seems like a good topic for a discussion

We have Mata, Rooney, Mikhi, Pogba, Lingard all capable of playing his position. We don't need him.

The thing is that James is arguably better than all of them besides Pogba and Mkhi. I wouldn't mind getting James and offloading any of them.

Firstly we've got Mata and Rooney for the 10 and whilst James is better he's not a massive improvement over Juan IMO. Not to mention we don't even play with a 10 all that much now it seems. He's relatively mediocre for his price tag on the wings, certainly not better than Martial or Miki there. for Chelsea as a LF or RF he'll be great but we have no place for him.

He'd probably choose Chelsea over us anyways really.

Don't want him. He plays the same role as Rooney, Mata, Micky, amongst others. His price is probably huge and Chelsea have Oscar money. I rather we spent it on a fullback or Griezz come summer when we've cleared some excess players

I'd say he's for Chelsea. Plus we've a good thing going at the minute. We need to develop our team not just keep adding names to it

This subject has been discussed thoroughly already. I think most, myself included, believe James would be an expensive and unnecessary luxury. Granted, some people wouldn't mind signing him out of spite so a rival can't sign him, but that's what clubs like City, Chelsea, and Real do. United has Rooney, Mata, Mkhitaryan, and Pogba that can all play in a similar role as James...not to mention Pereira and Januzaj, if they ever prove to be good enough to return and play for United. James isn't good enough on the wing to justify getting him for that role; if United splash on a winger, it should be a proper specialist winger.

I feel, after the potential signing of Lindelof, the focus should be on finding a short-term backup and eventual long-term replacement for Carrick. It's not as easy a thing to do as it is to type, Carrick is just so talented and versatile, not many players out there do what he does are are available to sign.

He's great, and he'd be valued here. But he isn't needed at all. It'd be a bit like the Mata transfer under Moyes.

I understand we already have too many options, but James, just like Pogba, is a player that you adjust the team to fit him. He's probably better than most of our options and could be just as good as our best players. It'd be a trill to have him.

No we need a fast pacey winger like Mane, not another attacking mid.
