I was talking to my brother the other day about how every possible thing Trump needed to win the election happened and it hit me: Donald Trump is the Homer Simpson to Hillary Clinton's Frank Grimes. Under any other circumstance, a guy like him would either be dead or in jail.
He was given the finest education, a huge loan to start his business, massive inheritance, numerous political and business connections that his father gave him. The man has had the opportunity to enter any venture he desired and he's failed in almost all of them but he keeps getting chances and the benefit of the doubt every step of the way.
Hillary was hardly a pauper growing up but the difference in starting points was still huge. She still had to work her way into the educational institutions she went to. She's been highly scrutinized at every step of her journey despite performing excellently at every position she's taken. She always leaves her current profession with enormous favorables. On paper, just like Frank Grimes, she's an extraordinarily attractive prospect.
Homer can sleep at work, ignore safety protocols, and cause nuclear meltdowns and never gets fired. Everyday, he proves to be a terrible worker and human being and never gets punished for it because that's just who he is and everyone loves and accepts him for it. Sound familiar?
Hillary spends the entire campaign trying to explain her case for why she should be president but let's face it, she only ever got screen time when she criticized Trump. Everything she says about him is true but what is the reaction? People say she needs to make a case for herself and, more importantly, that she should leave Trump alone.
The most striking analogy for me has to be the presentation of the nuclear power plant models and Trump's trip to Mexico. Homer is graded on a curve, performs terribly even then, and is treated to raucous applause. Trump has a meeting with the Mexican president, doesn't shit himself but contradicts everything he's said up to that point and is somehow declared presidential by every mainstream media outlet.
These two men are absolutely incapable of performing even remotely on par with their peers and so are instead given their own unique standards so they can even compete and now one of them is president. Doh
