Join with us, and let's stand up to Trump and speak out for the fundamental values we hold dear as Americans. Contributions are private.

STAND UP TO TRUMP!

Shock. Denial. Fear. Anger. Depression. ...just a few reactions many Americans have felt since the election of Donald Trump, whom we believe to be the most unqualified and irresponsible major candidate -- and now President-Elect! -- in perhaps all of American history.

But now we can't afford to indulge in the temptation to sit on the sidelines, or to let creeping normalization settle in. Our reaction must be ACTION -- to speak out, and speak up. That's why we're launching this crowdfunding campaign. If you've been looking for a way to channel your despair at where our country is going, we hope you'll join with us!

After the shocking and reprehensible rhetoric and revelations about Trump during the campaign and even after the election, we believe that, unchecked, Trump has the potential to seriously damage American ideals, democracy, institutions, norms, national interests, civil rights, good governance, civil liberties, the fabric of society, global stability and peace, equitable rule of law (and rule of facts over falsehoods!). (Not to mention to decimate a host of widely supported policies as well -- but this goes beyond partisanship.)

We -- patriotic Americans of all political stripes -- Democrats, Republicans, and Independents alike -- must unite, and stand up for American values and ideals.  We must not go quietly into the night. This is not normal, and must never be normal.

We believe Trump's election must provoke an all-hands-on-deck peaceful response wherein all Americans of reason and decency -- including those of us who haven't been activists before -- must peacefully speak up against any extremism and excesses by Trump. Through the democratic system, citizens can be the last check on potential excesses of Trump, and we must also unite against voices of hate, telling white supremacists, racists, xenophobes, misogynists, and others emboldened by Trump's campaign rhetoric, that hate still has NO place in America.

Donald Trump won the Presidency. Elections have consequences. But he lost the popular vote by a huge margin, and we must speak up against excesses. You can patriotically support the institution of the Presidency and root for any good policies, while simultaneously speaking up against the excesses of a flawed human being who occupies the Office. It's anyone's guess if Congress will serve its role as a balance of power, and meanwhile the media is under unprecedented assault (including by Trump).  Thus it is critical that citizens -- including you, by supporting this campaign! -- peacefully speak out for the American values we hold dear, against authoritarianism, and against voices of hatred arising from the dark shadows of society. Let us unite, and together be a light to head off the encroaching darkness.  We can't do this without your support -- will you join with us in this alliance to resist Trump, by contributing today?

We especially want your help in unlocking some of our stretch goals, like a joint press conference on Inauguration Day that become possible when donations total $40K and above, as detailed below.

This alliance is being spearheaded as an offshoot of the work of TechFire, a leading tech conference & events producer based in Los Angeles. While we don't normally get involved in politics, this is not a normal situation, and we believe the tech community must play a strong role in standing up for liberty, equality, justice, and other core American values. While TechFire is starting this alliance, it's intended to transcend beyond just tech, to all Americans of good conscience.  TechFire Founder & CEO TechFire has direct prior experience running a high-profile populist advocacy campaign that drove coverage in the New York Times, Good Morning America, LA Times (front page), Bloomberg, Business Insider, and much more (see bio at bottom).  We believe we have a civic and moral duty to stand up for our core American values, and we're excited about what we can do together with your support!

ACTION PLAN:

Rallying Tech Leaders Around a Strong Response to Trump

Given TechFire's heritage as a leading producer of tech conferences and events, our first action plan will be to convene a TechFire summit rallying tech leaders on lessons learned from the election, and on what needs to be done moving forward in this new Trump era.

TechFire will convene an event featuring experts from the tech community and the political/media world to dive deeper into the issues raised in so many election post-mortems --- issues such as combating fake news (something to their great credit Facebook has started to address), fighting the spread of hate online (and debating the balance with free expression), how best to strategize in the Trump era on the core tech policies and values, what the tech community can to push back against potential abuses by the Trump administration, and the debate over how tech leaders should best stand up to President-Elect Trump. We'll also look at the kind of issues Om Malik raised in his recent New Yorker piece on the tech community's empathy vacuum.

We will feature outspoken tech leaders speaking out about the importance of standing up to Trump -- weak voices advocating "rolling over" needn't apply.

A little bit about us: TechFire has been featured in industry arbitrator Techmeme's list of nationally & internationally significant tech events. Our 22 past events since 2014 have attracted 4000+ registrants, and have a reputation for featuring high-profile speakers (from prominent CEOs to some of Silicon Valley's leading venture capitalists). Normally we keep politics out of our events, but due to community interest during the Q&A from two recent events, we'll convene this special, politicized summit to bring the community together.

Contributions at the $50 level or more include a ticket to the event upon request. (Invites will be sent closer to the event, and tickets are subject to space availability -- first come first serve.  Regardless of whether you attend, your contribution will help "sponsor" this event.)

The event will be in Los Angeles in early 2017 (February or earlier).  (Why LA? That's where we have a loyal audience, with a track record of 22 past events.)

This plan will be triggered when the campaign "Tilts" (when contributions total the first goal of $7500).  (If the campaign fails to meet the goal, you won't be charged.)

But that's just the start of what we want to do....

HELP US UNLOCK THESE BIGGER GOALS:

Once/if we blast past the initial Tilt funding goal, we have much more on the agenda that's triggered as each successive "stretch goal" (contribution total) is reached:

$25,000 Total Raised
Silicon Valley Tech Leaders Speak Out on Responding to Trump

We will conduct a series of interviews with five tech leaders, from outspoken dissenters, to those with an understated response, discussing how the tech community can best stand up for its interests during the next four years. We'll draw from both the literal Silicon Valley and the metaphorical Silicon Valley (the broader tech community). The interviews, in audio/podcast form and/or written (transcribed) form, will be designed to help the Silicon Valley community settle on the best, most effective way to respond.

This goal, triggered if & when contributions total $25,000, would be implemented during Spring 2017, and completed no later than April 2017.

Standing up to Donald Trump on DAY ONE: Joint Press Conference on Inauguration Day (SIGNATURE INITIATIVE)

National Press Club

On Inauguration Day (Jan. 20, 2017), we will convene a coalition to speak out at a major joint press conference in Washington, DC, speaking out against Donald Trump and telling the media, the country, and the world that millions of Americans stand united behind core American values, norms, the constitution, and rule of law, and against hate and against potential excesses by Trump.

We have placed a hold on a press conference room at the National Press Club (pictured), and will host a press conference with prominent civil rights, political, and civic leaders joining us in speaking out. The purpose is to put Trump on notice on day one, and to signal to the nation and the world that even in this dark time, the light and hope of America -- the Shining City upon a Hill -- shall not be extinguished.  By convening the press conference, we will provide a platform for a broad range of groups to speak out.

The press conference is planned for the morning of January 20, before the Inauguration ceremony begins, to have the best chance of capturing the most media coverage possible.

National Press Club photos & media logos

Who Will Be Invited to Speak?  We will provide a platform for prominent civic leaders to speak out, and will also ourselves offer a call to action for Americans themselves to speak out over the coming four years. We will invite leaders from the nation's most prominent civic nonprofits, tech and other business leaders, prominent outspoken Republicans and Democrats both in and out of government, and perhaps a celebrity or two, too!      To be more specific, we'll invite leaders leaders from respected nonprofits like the ACLU, Federalist Society, 350.org, Amnesty International, NRDC, Anti-Defamation League (ADL), Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), Southern Poverty Law Center, National Council of La Raza, HRC, FamiliesUSA, and Reporters Without Borders. We'll invite prominent Democrats and Republicans both inside and outside of government (e.g. Sen. Bernie Sanders, David Frum, Van Jones, Ana Navarro, etc.), and celebrities such as Mark Ruffalo or George Clooney.  (No endorsement or confirmation is implied by any of those listed--invitations have not yet gone out; this list simply indicates the kind of speakers we plan to invite-- but if there's one thing we're known for at TechFire, it's success in attracting high-caliber speakers!)

What kind of issues will be represented by the speakers? Fundamental American values of democracy, constitutional governance, rule of law, checks & balances,  the first amendment & freedom of the press and of dissent, civil rights & rejecting hate, civil liberties, anti-corruption, national security & rejecting foreign influence, climate change, healthcare/medicare, and protections for and equality for all. (With so much under potential threat, we can't guarantee there will be time for every issue, but we'll cover as much as possible!)

Why a joint press conference? To show a united voice, and to show to the nation, and the world that we’re in this together, and together, America’s values will survive and ultimately trump Trump!    We will also call upon Americans of all stripes to speak out in the coming weeks and years. The press conference should also help foster alliances between disparate nonprofits and activists who could benefit from working together in this unique and dangerous time in our nation’s history.

What Press will be invited?  All the major cable news networks, broadcast networks, national newspapers, radio, etc. will be invited.   We expect a large media turnout (while we can't guarantee who will be there, obviously, our founder has had success in the past driving press coverage by hosting a press conference on other issues).

Note: Until funding is raised and the room is paid for, the hold for the room at the National Press Club could be lost. If for any reason we can't move forward with things there then, we would choose one of the numerous other suitable alternates in Washington, DC, or worst case another date soon into Trump's First 100 Days (very unlikely).  No endorsement is indicated by the National Press Club, nor by the press whose logos are shown only to illustrate the kind of outlets we'll invite (we can't guarantee coverage, but expect significant interest!)

This goal, triggered if & when contributions total $40,000, would be completed in January 2017.

Fighting Back During Trump's First 100 Days: An Action a Day Keeps Trump at Bay (KEY INITIATIVE)

During the crucial First 100 Days of Trump's Presidency, we will provide a coordinating role for concerned Americans, with an email list offering the top single action item daily (weekdays) that Americans can implement to push back. Whether it's a quick call to put pressure on a decisionmaker, ways to help support a community hit by a hate crime (or to help a community activist who Trump targets with a tweet!), or highlighting nonprofits that are worth volunteering for or donating to, we will rally people around the one quick single action they can take daily to push back against Trump.

We will work with a wide range of respected nonprofits, advocacy groups, and political leaders to offer input into the action items that we send out.

This goal, triggered if & when contributions total $70,000, would be implemented during Spring 2017, and completed at the end of April 2017.

$100,000 Total Raised
Podcast: Serving as a Watchdog on Trump's First 100 Days with Hard-hitting Commentary & Analysis

We will launch a podcast during Trump's First 100 Days, with 15 episodes, featuring a mix of hard-hitting commentary and sober outside analysis from prominent guests.

The start of each podcast will feature our own commentary, followed by an interview with a prominent guest or a discussion among panelists (modeling our style for the analysis on the style of Charlie Rose or Gwen Ifill (RIP!).

Just a few of the kinds of topics we'll cover:

• survival tips: advice from mental health leaders on keeping sane in Trump's America

• lessons from historians and academics on how other societies have combated the rise of authoritarianism, fascism, and other threats

• rallying calls to support communities impacted by hate crimes across the country

• how to restore faith in the media -- the critical fourth estate (which it might be noted, has before brought down a Presidency!)

• what the Trump Administration means for issues for Silicon Valley priorities like net neutrality and immigration, and how the tech leaders can rally behind their priorities.

• in-depth, extended interviews (inspired by the style of Charlie Rose and Gwen Ifill (rest her soul), featuring guests and roundtable panels of political leaders, analysts, and experts.

• and at all times, we will offer camaraderie, and a sense of togetherness as we all work together to hold on to our American values -- and our sanity!

This goal, triggered if & when contributions total $100,000 or more, would be completed with 15 episodes released on an ongoing basis (with the sum done by no later than May 2017).

AND MORE:

Help us blast past these goals, and we will unlock even more ambitious plans, which we will post here.

WHO WE ARE

DAVID C. MURPHY, Founder

LinkedIn  Twitter

David C. Murphy is the Founder & CEO of TechFire, and has experience successfully leading high-profile advocacy campaigns to fight for the public interest. With a background spanning tech, advocacy, government affairs, events, entrepreneurship, and community organizing, David believes we must not just curse the darkness, but must be a force for change for the better. So he is leveraging his position as Founder & CEO of tech conference producer TechFire to do what he believes is a civic and moral duty for our beloved country -- to speak out.

A tech leader. David founded TechFire in 2013, which he currently runs as CEO singlehandedly building it into a tech conference & events powerhouse in Los Angeles, featured in Techmeme's list of nationally & internationally significant tech events alongside events like TED, SXSW, TechCrunch Disrupt, and Web Summit. TechFire has hosted more than 22 events, from conferences, to fireside chats hosted by the likes of Google and Microsoft. Speakers have ranged from venture capitalists from leading Silicon Valley venture capital and Founders & CEOs of startups that have gone to be acquired for / go public for a billion dollars or more. David's events at TechFire have attracted, and more than 4000 registrants. To learn more visit techfire.co.

An experienced advocate. David previously led a high-profile outreach and advocacy campaign tackling the most infamous, intractable problem in America's second largest city -- Los Angeles -- as President of Angelenos Against Gridlock

David Murphy - Press Conference on ABC7 TV

His work drew exceptionally widespread press coverage, including the New York Times, Good Morning America, Los Angeles Times front page, Bloomberg, NPR / NBC / CBS / ABC stations, the Associated Press, The Next Web, Ars Technica, Wired, and much more (see media highlights at right). David's work attracted high-profile funding from prominent tech billionaires and other prominent backers, as well as event sponsors like Google and Uber. Over the years, David's activism has helped lead voters to pass a $40 billion ballot measure that will transform LA, and the pressure created by the near-blanket press coverage he generated helped lead the Mayor of L.A. to appoint a czar to speed up progress.

Media Highlights

Political & policy chops. David has a strong political and-and policy acumen, having previously handled public affairs and government affairs for one of Los Angeles' leading business advocacy 501(c)(4) nonprofits.  He has repeatedly been called on by Democratic campaigns for president as a volunteer for key presidential fundraisers and rallies for the Sanders, Clinton, and Obama campaigns.  David graduated from Claremont McKenna College with a B.A. in Government (with Honors) and interned for the U.S. House of Representatives Rules Committee, and for the US Agency for International Development (USAID) in Kiev, Ukraine.

A passion for protecting American exceptionalism. Having spent significant time living, working, and traveling on a Fellowship in developing countries in Eastern Europe, Africa, and Asia, David has seen first hand the dangers of corrupt, undemocratic, abusive government leaders, and he believes we must all do our part to push back against the erosion of good governance in America. Having grown up dividing his time between the US and countries around the world, David feels passionately in the inherent worth and dignity of all people, and is deeply concerned about incidents of hate and efforts to stroke fears and divide us in America. Believing we must all come together to speak up for American values and Americans of all stripes, David is spearheading this campaign, which he can only do with your support.

Risks, Challenges, and a Few Thoughts

We don't claim to be able to block the Trump Administration from taking actions history may judge harshly, or to stop all hate. All we can do is speak up and push back and have whatever effect possible! But we believe it is our moral duty to try. We will do our part to stand up and tell our fellow Americans, President Trump, and the world, to be a voice for the millions of Americans who reject Trump's offensive, extremist campaign promises, and who reject hate.

All plans of course have the potential for setbacks including speaker cancellations, venue conflicts, etc., (and in the worst case we will do our best to find alternatives), but we have years of experience producing events and running outreach campaigns, and are familiar with how to avoid common pitfalls.

Note: contributions are not tax deductible.

Words of Inspiration

New York Times columnist Charles M. Blow put it eloquently on speaking back to Trump (emphasis added):

I have not only an ethical and professional duty to call out how obscene your very existence is at the top of American government; I have a moral obligation to do so.

I’m not trying to convince anyone of anything, but rather to speak up for truth and honor and inclusion. This isn’t just about you, but also about the moral compass of those who see you for who and what you are, and know the darkness you herald is only held at bay by the lights of truth.

... I’m thankful that I have the endurance and can assume a posture that will never allow what you represent to ever be seen as everyday and ordinary.

No, Mr. Trump, we will not all just get along. For as long as a threat to the state is the head of state, all citizens of good faith and national fidelity — and certainly this columnist — have an absolute obligation to meet you and your agenda with resistance at every turn.

Let's stand united together. Thank you for your support!

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Are Contributions Tax Deductible?

No, they are not. This is a rapid-response project to an urgent and unexpected threat -- the election of Donald Trump, and the rise of hate across the country. We cannot afford to wait many months to apply and wait for a potential IRS nonprofit exemption before starting our work, so rather than forming a new entity and trying to apply for nonprofit status (we're not a nonprofit), we are structuring this as an offshoot of our existing TechFire operations so we can hit the ground running IMMEDIATELY after the crowdfunding reaches its goal(s).
The Inauguration is mere weeks away!

  • Are there rewards like t-shirts?

Since we need to move so quickly with our outreach plans, there aren't physical rewards like t-shirts or bumper stickers as part of this crowdfunding campaign, no. We want to provide an opportunity for people to channel their concerns about Trump into action! Since we'll be starting our work so quickly, we want to focus on implementing the work that your contributions will support.

  • Can we trust you? How will you be accountable and how will money be used? Who are you?

We are grateful for your trust and will report back to all of our backers both during and after the completion of the goals funded by this crowdfunding project. The project will be managed by TechFire Founder & CEO David Murphy, who has a long track record of not just convening events with high-level speakers at TechFire (http://techfire.co), but of running high-profile outreach campaigns and conducting political advocacy.

David singlehandedly has built TechFire into a leading tech conference producer recognized in Techmeme's list of nationally & internationally significant tech events, hosting tech conferences and events with leading Silicon Valley venture capitalists and tech CEOs. TechFire's 22 events have attracted more than 4000 registrants.

David previously ran a high-profile outreach & advocacy nonprofit sector project called Angelenos Against Gridlock. David's work generated widespread news coverage by the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times front page, Good Morning America, local NPR / NBC / CBS / ABC stations, and much more. David's work at Angelenos Against Gridlock was funded by Elon Musk, The David Bohnett Foundation, and by event sponsors like Google, Uber, and Lyft. foundation and was repeatedly funded by Elon Musk and other demanding donors based on progress shown). Read more at http://endinggridlock.org/press.

David also worked for one of L.A.'s most powerful advocacy nonprofits (the Valley Industry & Commerce Association (http://vica.com)), a nonprofit 501(c)(4) group with members like Disney, and AT&T, where he learned best practices on outreach and advocacy.

More recently, David has been trusted by Fortune 500 brands and industry leaders like CBRE, Deloitte, EY, and Wilson Sonsini (Silicon Valley's leading law firm) who sponsored David's conferences and events at TechFire, and by companies like Google and Microsoft that hosted past TechFire events. David's built TechFire from scratch, and under his leadership drew recognition by Techmeme in their list of nationally & internationally significant tech events, attracting speakers of the caliber who also speak at TED, SXSW, TechCrunch Disrupt, DLD, etc. TechFire is part of DMBH Group, and run by David Murphy. Visit techfire.co to learn more.

David graduated with B.A. in Government (with Honors) from Claremont McKenna College, where as a student he served as a Congressional intern for the House Rules Committee.

The funds for this project will be received by TechFire parent, DMBH Group's general funds, overseen by David Murphy who will ensure compliance with & completion of project goals. A separate LLC (or other successor corporate structure(s)) may be created to carry out the project. You can rest assured that with David's experience and track record from TechFire and Angelenos Against Gridlock and beyond, that project is worthy of your trust. Thank you!

  • What else can I do to help?

Subscribe to local and national newspapers -- the "fourth estate" needs all the money they can get. Donate to civil liberties and civil rights nonprofits. Reach out to friends, coworkers, neighbors and strangers from minority groups that may be feeling fearful or unwelcome. Let this many be an example: https://twitter.com/CharlesFinch/status/802549990451073024

  • What's a tech group like TechFire doing getting into politics?!

It's no secret most tech leaders in Silicon Valley and beyond opposed Trump in the election. But now that he won, we believe it's our patriotic duty as Americans who love this country to drop what we're doing, and respond to this unprecedented threat against our American values.

In short, we're doing it because it's our moral duty. To quote New York Times columnist Charles M. Blow, "For as long as a threat to the state is the head of state, all citizens of good faith and national fidelity — and certainly this columnist — have an absolute obligation to meet you and your agenda with resistance at every turn."

TechFire Founder & CEO David Murphy has a long history of political advocacy and outreach. Before running TechFire, he ran a nonprofit project tackling Los Angeles' most infamous problem -- its traffic -- earning front page headlines and waging a high-profile campaign for change. Now, David believes it's time for all Americans to do what they can for their beloved country.

  • How can I get in touch with you?

  • When will my card be charged?

The following is from the Tilt Pro help files (https://docs.tilt.com/docs/payment-basics):

    --
When a contribution is made to a campaign that has not yet met its goal (tilt amount [$7500])...
Cards will be authorized for the full amount of the contribution to ensure that sufficient funds are available, but not charged (e.g. no funds debited).

    --
At the time the sum of the contributions surpasses your stated goal (Tilt amount) [$7500], the cards that had previously only been authorized will be charged and the funds collected.

! Authorizations usually remain on cards for 7-10 business days

Although cards are not charged until the stated goal (tilt amount) has been reached, the funds will be earmarked by the card issuing bank.

The authorization made for a contribution to a campaign is similar to the hold placed on a card when used at a gas station or for a stay at a hotel.

Tilt cannot remove or advise on the exact timeline for removal of authorizations / holds to cards. The card issuing bank is the sole authority on these timelines.

  • Are contributions anonymous?

    Yes, contributions are private.

  • What kind of response are you advocating?

Only a peaceful, non-violent, lawful approach to speaking out through the democratic system. But we do think it's important we don't just tweet, and gripe about things on Facebook. We do need to speak out in real life too!

  • What is Tilt / Tilt Pro?

Tilt is a crowdfunding site, backed by Y Combinator and Andreessen Horowitz, which we at TechFire believe offers certain key advantages over competitors like Kickstarter and Indiegogo.
