Gamer hate incoming in 3…2…1…

Sadly, games and comics creators consistently design their gay female characters so their straight male fans can also find it “totally hot.”
-
It should go without saying that queer women do not exist for straight men. The comic book and gaming industries must have missed the memo.
-
It’s good Blizzard is responding to demands for diversity. Maybe try designing some characters that make straight dudes super uncomfortable.
-
Blizzard is trying to provide character diversity without alienating their straight male fanbase. They want their cake, and to eat it too.
-
Thing is, really challenging media representations does require making entitled straight dudes super uncomfortable. At least initially.
-
*sigh* I see that decades of straight dudes setting the standard for what's “sexy” in media has made this nuanced conversation impossible.
-
There’s a big difference between what individuals might find attractive and HOW characters are designed. I’m only talking about the latter.

@radicalbytes I dunno, my queer gaze is pretty happy rn -
@AmyDentata I’m sure many people are happy. I just don’t think we can deny Blizzard’s track record in designing their characters for dudes. -
@radicalbytes For sure, but there's also people amazed that anyone would read her as straight. -
@radicalbytes This sort of reading is always a bit fuzzy and relative to regional norms so there's lots of wiggle room. -
@AmyDentata Sure but in terms of what mass culture produces, this seems inline with the “gay is ok as long as dudes can find it hot” thing. -
@AmyDentata Which you gotta admit is an ongoing problem that sends horrible messages to men about female sexuality? -
@radicalbytes@AmyDentata its sending a great message to me, a lesbian -
@radicalbytes@AmyDentata to paraphrase I would rather the main character be a lesbian w her whole nipples out than wait for the perfect rep - さらに表示

@radicalbytes I've never understood this sentiment that it's BAD if someone straight finds a LGBT character attractive (Im not straight btw) -
@rdb1191998 It’s not bad. The problem comes when straight men design queer characters for other straight men to find hot. -
@radicalbytes Fetishising LGBT people is definitley a problem, but I don't think that happened in this situation -
@radicalbytes I think it's great that this game's mascot, who gets the most exposure, is not straight -
@radicalbytes I know you mean well, & there's still plenty of problems, but it's ok to be happy about a good thing -
@rdb1191998 It’s not a bad thing, just expected. Again Blizzard just wants its cake an to eat it too. -
@radicalbytes But that isn't what's happened. Plenty of straight men are upset about this, they don't care if Tracer is attractive -
@radicalbytes A certain # of straight men are going to find every female character in Overwatch attractive - さらに表示
