I'm not really gonna change your view on this but I understood why Darmian started yesterday. He was up against Brunt, who isn't the kind of pacy singer Darmian struggles with. He is taller than Blind so Mourinho opted with him. Darmian didn't really struggle until Leko came on.

That said, it is a bit shocking that anyone with pace can beat Darmian when he is on the left. First Sissoko and now Leko, both mediocre players as far as I've heard

I think that depends on our opponent and the state of the game.

Darmian is a more aggressive LB, both at the front and at the back. I think that benefits us against weaker opposition, or in situations when we need to throw everything at the opposing team.

You might argue it also depends on who is playing at CB. Two of Blind's biggest attributes are his calmness and ability to pick a pass. If we are playing with two CBs who can do these things, why not opt for a different style of LB?

I actually think this sub's been pretty harsh on Darmian since he's moved to the left side. IMO his best is yet to come.

I'm worried for our young talents, particularly Martial and Rashford. Tony has had maybe one good game so far and Rashford only a few, Mourinho isn't exactly known for his work with young players, all our young players bar Lingard Seem to have regressed.

I'm also worried he won't abide by our youth philosophy AND considering some of the u18s that worries me, will Tahith Chong and Angel Gomes etc get the chance when ready? Admittedly there are few young talents to promote in the u23s, bar Tuanzebe and Riley but them not being used and the lack of Fosu worries me

I'm not particularly concerned. Martial seems to be suffering from issues off the pitch as well as a bit of tiredness and adapting to a new style. He didn't have a great Euros either. Also, I feel under LvG his style worked well as he received the ball almost stationery and then went at a defence. But now, Jose wants him receiving the ball on the run and getting behind defences, and it's just not his strong point.

Rashford has had a lot of opportunities, so he's not being held up. I think we expect too much too early. He had such a phenomenal year, it's raised a bar. If you went back to 18 December 2015 and asked what you'd hope from Rashford for the 16/17 season, you'd probably say "A couple of games in the Carling Cup would be great". But now he's having to deliver as one of three striking options we have, and I'd rather he dropped back and had the pressure taken off.

Lingard is getting game time in decent matches, and Jose is building a team around a young talent like Pogba.

I don't think any of the youth are quite there to be contributing massively at the moment. Fosu-Mensah has featured but not shown enough to be a major player (YET).

The ship needs to be steadied, and then the youth can be brought in even more than they are now. I'd like to see Borthwick-Jackson brought back too, as he'd be a better option at LB than Darmian.

I agree with this mostly but I think Fosu-Mensah could have been more involved. There have been opportunities for him to come in but he hasn't been given them.

The times that come to mind were the games when Ashley Young played right back. I always wonder what the point is of playing a guy out of position when you have someone who regularly plays there and has a future.

There's a sense that he isn't really trusted to play all that much.

Mou has had a very hard start. Like many, I wasn't expecting us to be this far from the top of the table when the season began. Results are not coming in droves for Mourinho and you don't play kids when there is this amount of pressure. Don't get me wrong, but I'm sorry, you don't "experiment" when you haven't won in 6 games. You look for a winning formula. A solution. I believe once we get a solid run of games, Mou will be more confident to give some of the young talents a run. The pressure that was on the team and is on the team, with every game being a final, it's simply hard to throw in anyone.

With the regression, Martial I believe will come good. Remember kids hardly grow linear in football. With all the personal problems at the start of the season gone, I think he will come good. Rashford barely has played in the position he was known for. He will come good as well.

Lingard is thriving because if you watch our games he plays, he follows Mou directions to 100%. Every manager loves a player like that. Mou shouts and he's off. And it's coming out good for him

I think the reason he hasn't given too many chances to young players is because he hasn't been in a position to really experiment. If results had been better at the start of the season we would have seen more rotation. But he basically has to play his strongest team as every match is a must win. He said something about having to play Ibra in our last Europa match as we had to win. Also our young players haven't particularly impressed when given the chance. Martial has been in bad form since the Euros in the summer and hasn't done much for us, I don't think that's Mourinho's fault. He started the season 1st choice on the left but lost his place. Fosu-Mensah was terrible in the Europa match he started and was partly responsible for the goal we conceded. I think if results improved a lot we may see more chances for younger players. This is also the 1st selection so far that's been settled and getting results so I doubt he'd want to change it now

If he plays as a striker, he'll be bullied by most CBs and we would have to resort to possession play because he's not good in the air.

Wasn't bullied by CBs last season tbf and saying you have to play a possession system if your striker isn't good in the air is more or less nonsense.

I don't think he was ever given the chance to prove himself. His greatest skill is his tackling, he should have been great as the deepest CM stopping attacks at source and giving the defence a lot of protection.

His attributes aren't flashy and it's hard to make headlines in that position just tackling and recycling possession but it's very important and it's what he was known for before he came here.

I am confident that when he goes to a team where he's appreciated he'll flourish and hopefully for him he gets another chance at a big club to prove he's made for the top level. He was massively underused by us.

Schneiderlin's case is quite interesting. In my opinion, it's not about quality, it's more about his unsuitability our to our game plan. His strongest attribute is not simply tackling, it's actually pressing. He is the best when it comes to closing down space and breaking up play. He is very unlucky that Van Gaal and Mourinho are both old-fashioned: Van Gaal didn't like his MF to roam, while Mourinho preferred a specialist and required his DM to stay back. Let's just say if Schneiderlin were at Liverpool or Spurs, Klopp/Pochettino would get the best of him.

Fellaini's few strengths will never justify his place in our lineup and don't make up for what he takes away from a team by being out there.

(This isn't a hate post, I like Fellaini as a guy, just thought it'd be interesting to hear a tactical argument/counter to my point).

He shouldn't start but he provides a useful option (provided he doesn't make clumsy challenges in the box).

Towards the end of the game we saw De Gea playing it long to Fellaini and I counted at least 3 times where he got it down or flicked it to keep possession high up the field. When it gets to another tense game and we're holding on to a lead that option is great and will see us through.
