Most of us understand nothing in politics happens by chance. Putting this man in power is a calculated move. What end could possibly be reached?

I don't know. It certainly has done wonders for dividing the country along very strict lines. Having a common enemy in a position of power is pretty common in business, everyone needs a boss to bitch about.

Where are we going as a country, what problems are so imperative that we need a man like this to distract the populous?

We really have to understand this man is not some independent anomaly that gained power so easily. There is not a single person that holds any amount of power that would be willing to bet their position on a wild card.
