Screw the english dubs. The animation was made to fit the japanese dialogues which were recorded prior to the animation itself.

Yeah but I'm not anime connoisseur by any means and I personally find it off putting when people insist on acting that way. Enjoy it the way you prefer as other will the way they prefer. All three dubs exist for their own reasons

Hands down - this is going to go as one of the best animated films to ever be made! and the best animated film in the 80's , along side with Grave of the fireflies.

I fear that we'll never get something like this again, what with the fascination people have with dumping two-dimensional animation in favor of three-dimensional animation.

+Ragitsu It's a scary thought... we certainly won't from an American company...It's down to Japans incredibly talented animation studios and possibly some big American investment that will get another flick like this made... Steamboy is a fairly new animation, created by the guy behind Akira, so if you haven't seen that i'd strongly suggest it!

I finally watched Steamboy two days ago, as a matter of fact. Talk about a gorgeous film!
Too bad it was a commercial flop here in the states.

dude its a fantastic movie.. i was obsessed with it for a little while.. I have the special edition dts version dvd... so great watching the movie on a good sound system.. even the the dts version is japanese tho.

the dvd I have is called akira dts sound edition.. but I used to watch in a 5.1 setup with an AV receiver that could do dts decoding. Nothing very crazy but still great sound.

Ghost in the Shell (which is very famous) surpasses the detailed backgrounds on display in Akira and there are others which surpass this in terms of animation too. But for 1986 this was a movie made purely to showcase Japanese talent and not made to re-coup on its budget..
Still hasn't been surpassed in ambition and soul.

Paprika had a pretty cool animation as well :) lots of transformations and Ghibli-esque visuals but scarier

Its incredibly sharp looking for its age. most anime from that era tend to show their age more, but Akira looks like it could've come out at least a decade later.

The newer dubs sound so much more "in the environment" rather than the older dubs sounding like the characters are speaking over everything.

One day if ever I want to be director and bring this movie to live-action and do it justice I would cast Shia LaBeouf and Miles Teller!!

the original dub in 1988 was way better than this remastered version dub, the original voice actors sounded more ideal to the characters.

There are at least 3 dubs for this. the original, plus 2 more. I know this because I can recite line by line the movie based off the original dub. when ever i see the newer dubs I will start to recite it in my head then the translations don't match either, because I understand Japanese as well.

Might just be the most incredible piece of 2D animation I have ever seen. Just realizing that everything in this film is hand drawn... it's hard for me to find anything else that is this fluid and detailed

It's an anime movie based on a 2000 page plus manga series. It's about a biker gang in Neo-Tokyo, a Tokyo devastated by a large explosion that caused world war three, but was rebuilt. In this world the government is struggling to take control as terrorist organizations that worship a fabled psychic boy called Akira come closer and closer to finding the governments connection to him.

I can't wait until the live-action movie comes out. Boy will every biker be waiting to see the real-life iteration of Kaneda's bike. It's been attempted but nobody has seemed to have it down.

200 horses at 12,000rpm with ceramic hardware and cpu ABS huh? Shit i guess when they wrote this in the 80s They thought the 1000FZR would never be doubled in stats(145@10,000) If it dosen't have sweet torque and weight then we already past the future :P

Don't know what the first guy is talking about. It's the original Streamline dub that is impossible to find on here. I do agree, though, that a 'slice of life' series about Kaneda & the Capsules would be a cool sidestory.

Jesus fuck this animation is FLOSS. Ive been watching anime for years and always knew this looked good but like damn. Sometimes during anime it looks like someone is dragging and clicking the characters with a mouse sometimes to move them even if for a second, or the 3d may not blend well or something just a tiny bit off but the movements in this shyt are well....floss ha

Hey, not to draw attention off of the awesome bike scenes, and I understand the movie is old and from a lesser generation for anime translations, but the lack of effort put in by the voice actors really struck me, and it hasn't gotten much better across anime dubs over the years either. It really depresses me. Across the board the most popular actors, often in roles as main characters, put in this two-dimensional, plasticky performance, either robotic and monotone or carrying this forcedly exaggerated cartoony twang. Why are dubs in general this way?. I suppose paychecks are a thing, but really, why is there NO ONE interested in putting some believability into his character for the sake of his character?
