**Check out this Skillshare class by the director Nguyen-Anh Nguyen, about indie filmmaking and how he made the Akira Project and his newest project, Temple. http://skl.sh/anh

The Akira Project is a crowd-sourced, non-profit project meant to create a live action fan trailer of AKIRA, the renowned manga-turned-anime film from the late 1980′s; a stunning example of both mediums as art forms. While Hollywood has been working on a live-action Akira movie for a few years now, we, as fans, wanted to take a shot at making our own adaptation. A chance to stick as close to the source material as possible. A chance to do Akira Justice.

We launched an Indiegogo campaign in July 2012 as part of a crowd sourcing effort to make this project come to life. Many people contributed not just financially but offered their time and talent to help the production that was shot in Montreal, Quebec from November 2-5th 2012. What started out as a simple idea between two guys having a beer (Hey! It'd be cool to see Kaneda ride his bike around Neo-Tokyo!), became a global endeavour, filled with adventures and hurdles, involving more than 40 artists in 12 different countries.

After a year and a half in post-production, we are proud to present the project to Akira fans the world over. We hope to have done justice to the timeless work of Katsuhiro Otomo and look forward to, someday, seeing the full scope of the Akira story translated to the big screen as a live-action.

pretty cool, but with what little dialogue there is i kinda felt like it was a betrayal from the OG characters. also is that yamagata holding a gun? cus thats just dumb. Nobody has guns except the military and the rebels, the kids are a highschool aged bike "gang"

Number one rule about making an Akira trailer. Do NOT, spoil ANYTHING about Tetsuo's condition or powers. Make it seem like it is only about cyberpunk biker gangs, and let Tetsuo's powers be entirely surprising to people who have never seen/read the original.

+XDomeMan Still, its just such a surprising plot to those who don't see it coming. I'd hate to ruin for the few who don't already know about the fantasy elements of the plot.

Unless you're going to read the actually manga, it's pretty hard to give anything in Akira away in even a 5 minute trailer. I watched the animated film long before I finally read the story, and discovered I still had no clue what was going to happen.

Unfortunately if you're using that trailer for funding you don't have much choice. You need to show potential investors 1) what you're capable of doing, and 2) what they can expect. You'd probably see a completely different trailer if this were for an actual finished film in the can. This could be the only live action Akira anything that fans get ( provided Hollywood doesn't get their hands on it) so I'm happy to see what fans might have done with the project.

not to mention that Akria is so influential that everything has been pretty much spoiled already. it's like telling someone making an FF7 movie to not give away who dies.

If Hollywood is still going to make an AKIRA movie, considering how China is gaining box office prominence, probably the best way to adapt AKIRA (note that I have only seen the movie, haven't read the manga yet) is to change the setting from NEO TOKYO to NEO HONG KONG. While this would technically be pandering to an anti-Japanese China, it would also be used as an excuse to make the themes of AKIRA feel more real world. The thing about Hong Kong is that they have always had this struggle to gain their own identity as they are constantly put under the control of greater powers. I has once read someone's interpretation of the AKIRA movie that the conflict of AKIRA and Tetsuo himself represented Japan's struggle for its place in the world due to westernized influence and a more westernized government. I should alos mention that this was the reason why the 1995 GHOST IN THE SHELL movie took place in Hong Kong instead of Tokyo, because director Oshii saw that Hong Kong's identity crisis could be used to symbolize Motoko's own identity crisis in the movie. Now take into account that in Hong Kong, due to China's still strict hold on Hong Kong's more democratic values, there have been student protests, similar to what happens in AKIRA's NEO TOKYO, so if the themes of AKIRA were played with to fit this then this movie could be a potential hit in China and if marketed right it could be a hit in the US and show Hollywood that you are able to use more unknown actors or actors of different ethnicities in a big movie (if successful). Now insert very artsy (or experienced) director to make said film. What do you think? Could my NEO HONG KONG setting idea work for AKIRA?
    1 2
    illusionmess
I don't think that would necessarily be better (maybe a little) considering the tense relations between HK and mainland.

+Yaku That's what I mean. The Punk genre in general takes the modern day and sets it a few decades later to deconstruct it. 80s cyberpunk set in the 2010s obviously does not resemble the real 2010s right now....mostly.

2019 is too close to now, so it's silly. The rule of cyberpunk is generally "30 years from now", so 2019 would make sense for 1988 Akira.

Leonardo Topić Well.. They know what 2019 might look like now, and can imagine, the Tech, featured in an Akira movie might still be futuristic.. So they placed it further in the future to give space for progress..

Leonardo Topić Maybe the technology presented in the original movie during 2019 was unrealistic and they changed the year for that reason.

[Semi Long Read] Last thing i ever heard from an AKIRA movie regarding Hollywood was that it had jumped from director to director and no one really want to take a hold of it. There was one director (dont remember his name) But that guy came the furthest with the ideas to choice some actors (that was clear 4 the roll of Tetsuo) You can read about it somewhere if you search 4 it. But nothing happened or at least what ive heard after that. The thing is, I take it 4 sure you have seen the anime and its like what? 2 hours and 50 minutes if i remember correctly now (but i can be wrong) And one thing every director have said is that they dont know or feel un sure about getting that down in to a 1h 50 min or 2h 30 min movie. The story is so deep and so complex so telling it will either way be rushed in some way and they said that if they ever made a movie AKIRA they needed to make it so the fans would be happy (ONE director said) The others have said that IF they do an AKIRA it might not be the same as the ANIME at all. But hey, A ghost in the shell live action movie (Hollywood) is coming soon and if that one breaks big , MAYBE ( i really REALLY hope so) make an AKIRA movie on 3 houers long or 3 shorter movies each 1 houer 30 min or so. But what i have seen from the Ghost in thet shell movie it dont look good. WAAAY wrong actor for the main police woman (so sorry, i forgot her name)

To avoid CHINA banning it for having Japanese characters, the movie could take place in a NEO HONG KONG, which while seemingly pandering to the Chinese govn't would actually be used to take the themes, conflict, and struggles in AKIRA to the next level. Do you agree?

I think that the most Japanese thing about Akira is that a lot of the story is themed around the fear of city-wide nuclear destruction. You lose a big part of the commentary and cultural fear by setting it in another country.

+KingxInxYellow Good point. The reason I had suggested Hong Kong was because I felt the the protestor and youth rebellion aspect of AKIRA would have fit nicely with Hong Kong's struggle to have its own identity while being under the influence of a bigger authority (from the suppression of its own democratic values to student protests).

Or to avoid Chinese censors while also keeping the story's integrity set the movie in a NEO HONG KONG? If you think about it, there are many ways to connect AKIRA and its themes with Hong Kong's own struggle to have its own identity amidst an authoritarian hold (note the student protests in Hong Kong). What do you think?

If Hollywood actually respected source material they could make a superior film. Hollywood films tend to "look" fantastic, but they have no faith in the audience to support stories that aren't spoon fed to them, and they've pretty much raised a generation of film goers that want simple films that don't require much thought, filled with lots of spectacle. Secondly they are hard pressed to have a large Asian cast be the lead actors in a big budget film of this magnitude. We're unfortunately in one of the worst possible times to try and make a faithful live action adaptation of Akira.

Making Akira live action is sort of like trying to make a live action Dune film. If they follow the manga you're looking at a trilogy easy, but even the most faithful adaptation is not going to appeal to the average movie goer.

So what you're saying is that it IS possible? I can dig this If Hollywood handles the remake with care and manage to make it its own thing and stick to the manga, it could be a really good trilogy. The anime classic only covers half the story, so if Hollywood don't fuck it up, we may experience the entire story. One huge drawback, artistically, would probably be if they made it PG-13. People would riot. No offense to Japanse filmmaker, but Attack on Titan...

Well Deadpool has shown that an R-rated blockbuster is viable given the material. Besides I don't think that it would be good to try to bring in young teenagers or kids to AKIRA with PG-13; sometimes you gotta just face the fact that your material is for a more mature audience (older teens, college, adult).

If there is ever a live action Akira movie, I don't care about anything else as long as they keep all of the fast-paced action, psychological horror, and sympathetic characterization of Tetsuo. I understand there's also a political subtext, which I can see most directors wanting to lean more towards, but Akira for me needs to be a psychological new age biopunk tragedy since I always read it more from the perspective of Tetsuo than Kaneda.

For the political subtext, a futuristic HONG KONG would be the perfect setting for a live-action AKIRA movie. But who should direct such an adaptation (trilogy of 2-parter?): Nolan, George Miller, Duncan Jones, who?

If Lucy did as well as it did at the box office Akira would fucking slaughter it, don't get me wrong I love Lucy (no pun intended) but you can't tell me the manga and/or anime didn't have a lot of impact on that film
    2 3
    Brandon Dozier
Who should direct said AKIRA film (or trilogy)? Nolan? George Miller? Luke Besson (who directed LEON: The Professional, Fifth Element, and of course Lucy)? And what if to get past Chinese censors (note that China doesn't like Japan) while also giving AKIRA justice, if instead of NEO TOKYO that the setting for the live action movie was a NEO HONG KONG (I think there is potential to make AKIRA resonate with Hong Kong considering all the student protests and China's strive to limit Hong Kong's democratic values)? Could that work?

People bitching saying Hollywood would shit on this movie (which is probably true) but just look at attack on titan. Taking any movie or series like this and trying to adapt it to live action is just a bad idea cause if you fuck it up, there's going to be a whole lot of people pissed off
    1
    Nosrah
Depends. They could just remake the original film with real people which won't be that bad, but if they changed anything it would probably suck.
    1 2
    Brandon Dozier
Well if it's not necessarily about changing the setting but rather more about how and why you do it. For instance while the GHOST IN THE SHELL manga takes place in Tokyo, the 1995 masterpiece takes place in HONG KONG and that change was done for artistic and thematic reasons. Meanwhile an AKIRA movie taking place in America just wouldn't work in my opinion; again HONG KONG would be a viable change of setting since again it would connect with the themes and conflict within AKIRA. While I think it would be cool to see Tokyo as a blockbuster setting (that is the only thing I have against white-washing, other than being a pointless race bending, that I am sick of seeing New York treated as the "center of the world".), but given China's increasing influence on Hollywood, Neo HONG KONG would be a better decision than Neo New York or Neo San Francisco since unlike the latter two HONG KONG actually can be used to make the story of AKIRA relevant and relate-able. Do you agree? Or should China and Japan just settle their tension diplomatically for a change?

"if it isn't broke don't break it" or make it better without trying to "fix it" (people who would try to "fix it" are the real problem, minding the so-called "realism" or trying to say that their version is "better; an actual adaptation would respect the material, not look down on it).

+Eethan O'Connell True. Which is dumb because the story is very Japanese; reflective, I think in part, of the bubble economy period there and the eventual outcome (as in the come-down after all the excesses that came before and a struggle to regain identity). Such things can happen in the West, but it's a purely Japanese story and perfect as it is. Not everything needs a live action, a reboot, a sequel, etc. Anyway, they already tried it to some extent with Chronicle.

I love Akira. That's a lot of work on the part of this team... Hats off. But I find it pity (And even annoying in the long time) to see people who want to copy and paste original works, without originality... Not to mention the music. An insult to th originale work...

Apparently Hollywood is going to make it a thing :D ! the director of daredevil (amazing show btw) is going to direct it and Leonardo DiCaprio is gonna be the producer. But it will take a while for it to be actually made. Rumored 2019 ):

    2 3

+Dennis Taylor Ya know.. I wish someone had the guts to bring a manga to life full on with Asian actors.. add in Western CGI and marketing.. and just turn it loose. Something just like this with more impressive visuals/scoring etc. If only money wasn't an object... and we could make whatever we wanted because all we valued was the earths resources and our own time..

I'm extremely disappointed by the fact that Hollywood will probably never be able to make something this epic. One of the best trailers I've ever seen, and it's for a movie that doesn't even exist!

If Hollywood actually decided to due this story properly, I feel like it would require at least a trilogy. One movie covering two volumes, but then, that might not be enough. If not, I'd gladly welcome a fourth part. Whatever it takes.

+Allen Babylon They would likely eff up the pacing like they tend to do with multiple-parters. I'm thinking latter Hunger Games and The Hobbit to start, in that they focused on how to get more money than telling the stories effectively.

This is by far the best anime-inspired live action trailer I've watched till date. You've really done justice to the movie. Tbh I found the original animated movie a lil creepy.. (can't blame me, I was what? 7-ish when I watched it) This trailer doesn't seem half as creepy. Which could go either way as far as the whole "do justice to the original" goes. But nonetheless it's a BRILLIANT trailer. You wouldn't believe it's fan-made. I'm going to follow through on this movie :3 you have my utmost respect!

The anime was confusing as all fucking hell and barely made any goddamn sense, because some idiot decided to stuff together an entire manga series into a movie and B. That the voice acting for Akira sucked balls. An before any of you nerds go "But de visiauls were awesome!" so what? James Camerons Avatar had great visuals, but the movies story still fucking sucked.

    kledder2
+Lawlaliet It doesn't sound like you're laughing. More like you are very angry. On imdb the rating is currently 7.9 so the majority agrees with me. That is a fact. And it wasn't like the pronunciation of the title is the only bad thing about this trailer. The real Akira movie is pretty good and there is nothing wrong with the Japanese voice acting. Again, the majority agrees with me (look at reviews and ratings).
    2 3
    Kanashe
+kledder2 So fucking what that the majority agrees? You have idiots saying how Prometheus is a good movie, and I can call those people morons and say they can go and suck on Ridley Scott's fucking dick or how Avatar can go and sink in the deepest part of James Camerons fucking ass. The original Akira movie isn't good, the plot is simply stupid as all fuck, because they pretty much try to stuff a manga sized plot into one movie, which leads to plotholes the size of a goddamn blackhole, and seriously fuck you and your "It's Japanese VA's good! 1 2
    Kanashe
+WELCOMETHRILLHO A. Do not compare music to a visual media. B. Akira is a fucking mess because as I said before, it try's to squeeze a manga worth material into one movie. professorbland
The movie actually does make sense; it speaks about the quest of science to further human progress, the place of the human being in the universe, the nature of consciousness, terrorism, nuclear warfare... the list goes on. It is a story told largely in the logic and dialogue of image. It is a world where big ideas are looming over everyone, ideas and technology that are difficult even for its inventors to understand. Everyone is groping around for meaning -- from the fanatics to the military to the bikers to the average people. If the movie didn't make enough sense to you, you haven't really seen it.
    7 8
    Kanashe
+professorbland Bull-fucking-shit. It doesn't speak about anything of that, so stop fucking pretending it does, It does't explain anything, it tosses one thing after another, then drops creating massive fucking plotholes, the manga actually does explain all the stuff you mentioned. ALl the movie has is flash and mirrors and just comes off as goddamn pretentious. Seriously, the second you have a movie talk about how 'amoebas don' make atomic bombs', that's when I said this movie can go fuck itself along with any hipster dickwad who defends it.

    Stars Sky
+Lawlaliet I´ve watched the Animemovie and it didn´t make much sense to me too. Sure it seemed very philosophical, and the atmosphere interesting, but I don´t think I´m the only one who felt a bit lost watching it the first time. I don´t think it was shit though but it lacked a better storytelling.
    2 3
    Kanashe
+Stars Sky Okay, fine me calling it 'shit' was uncalled true. An again, the reason WHY it lacked better storytelling was because it's a six volume manga into a movie. 'Course it doesn't make sense and has plotholes up the ass, but I'm more pissed off at people who TRY make it sound like it is so 'deep' when it's not.
    1 2
    professorbland
+Lawlaliet Even the Manga is overwritten and lags with all of these unnecessary extraneous plot lines, and the ending makes even LESS sense, surprisingly, than the movie. The reason why the movie is great and in my opinion "deeper" than the manga is that it doesn't explain, and doesn't need to explain as much as the manga. That sense of mystery leaves the images to stand more on their own. The images themselves are the story, are the main plot line. After reading the manga, I could definitely say that the movie was far superior, even though some of the dialogue in the movie could have been improved for the sake of clarity.
    2 3
    Kanashe
+professorbland Yeaah, I'm still gonna have to call bullshit, see I watched something like Ghost in the Shell, and that movie I'd say is FAR better in it's visuals, story and overall deep messages. Akira on the other hand, just comes off as very pretentious, specially with how many plotthreads that go no where, yeah I know it's not any better in the manga. But least there, you get SOME explanation for why there is civil unrest, the Akira thing, hell even the whole religion aspect. The movie doesn't explain anything that well in it's setting, and when I as the viewer have to fill up the missing blanks. It's not my take on anything, it's me filling the missing piece of a puzzle, something the damn writer should do.
    1 2
    Ryan Kramer
+Lawlaliet Straight up, I'm a fan of Akira. So I've got that baggage, but exactly what plot holes are in the film Akira? (Keep in mind, not explaining something isn't a plot hole, a plot hole is when specifically presented information is contradicted by something else that is also expressed.)
    1
    Kanashe
+Ryan Kramer Okay here are examples of plotholes: The whole kids thing with Akira, their goals are never explained and pretty much contradict what they are saying. They know where Akira is, and claim that Tetsuo mustn't awaken him, yet they themselves want him but don't go for him. Another plothole is we see that Tetsuo could easily shrug off multiple lazers, yet a single shot from Kaneda knocks him off. We are never given a good reason WHY Tetsuo wants to find Akira or what he's planning to do with him when he finds him, so when he finds out that Akira is nothing but remains in a jar, he looks rather dumb. How there's a religion based around Akira, when it's supposed to be a top secret government project, yet apparently everyone knows about it? The whole revolution thing, we are never given explanation for why there are rebels, when we are never told why there is civil unrest.

I don't believe the whole cast has to neccessarily all be japanese, however the main protagonists absolutely should be. Having an all japanese cast may alienate some of the western viewers. Imagine a japanese company making a movie about cowboys hiring only white actors that speak english and playing this in japan. It would be difficult for the viewers there to relate. I think there's some liberties the directors can take so that the film is more palatable to not only the die-hard fans but also filthy casuals. Under no circumstances however should it take place in any other place other than tokyo.

No those were just horrible actors and actresses that made they movie suck

    Kibate
The reason why things like DB:E and Avatar sucked were not because they were non-japanese actors, but because it was simply badly written/acted/etc. Like Edge of tomorrow the setting plays no important part in the story, replace in akira "tokyo" with any other big city and it would make just as much sense.

+Kibate Hum ... The right middle would be to get asian and japanese actors , even if they speak English in it it will be fine , but I hate the fact that Hollywood just doesn t cast Japanese actors, as if they could not find any that spoke English , like common ... to me the cast matter !  If in the story the character is Japanese, in the movie it should be the same , no matter what the language is.

+Dope Nana Sam on Noir Cloud But the ethnicity plays no role in (most) stories, the cast of Akira just happened to be japanese because it happened to be written by a japanese. Now changing the story or character development, as in making Tetsuo the good guy and Kaneda the bad guy is something that matters, but not whether they are japanese, white, black, brown or whatever. Also the #1 reason why they don't choose japanese actors for such movies is simply: There are not enough good ones in america. (and outsourcing cost too much) Not only would they need a certain standard in acting talent, but also look and act right for the characters and have enough to fill in an entire city of people. That's literally impossible for an american studio. But just forcing it on the movie studios in the country of origin is really bad too. To me it seems like you missed the entire point of such stories if you think their ethnicity matters.

+Kibate  this is not true , << Also the #1 reason why they don't choose japanese actors for such movies is simply: There are not enough good ones in america.>> as you wrote, I am sorry but it it is not the truth.  I work in filming in north america, so I know a bit of how it works with casting actors , you should check that documentary talking about how Hollywood doesn t want to cast a lot of Asian males in their film, specially Japanese, vietnamese ... look for it or try to get in touch with some Asians actors , ask them about their auditions, ask them  and then you will reach your own conclusions. At the end of the day people believe what they want, but me I just like to stick with facts.

+Dope Nana Sam on Noir Cloud yeah, facts are nice, so is logic/common sense/reason true, facts go before reasoning, but for it to become a "fact" you should provide more than "just look it up" if you want me to believe you, otherwise i call bluff or misinformation on your part. (Even people who has worked in a specific field get a LOT of misinformation due to various reasons, this is why i won't believe anyone just because "I work there") So why not give me the title of that documentary? The only one i found looking for such a vague description is one called "hollywood chinese" which seems to be too specific of cases and not actually representing majority of studios/movies/asians/actors etc. especially not regarding adaptions of stories that are centered on asian culture.

for me,hollywood is a huge asshole prick who thinks that they're better than anyone else and wants to get a grip / exploits other country's work..i didn't say that their work n movies is not great,it is incredible..but sometimes, the product is just unexpected and disappointing... " #1 reason why they don't choose japanese actors for such movies is simply: There are not enough good ones in america." ??? have u ever watched live action GANTZ Movie? if not, then u should..its produced by japanese,so what i'm saying is,why bother letting other party to take over and change the main storyline setback, if the original is more than capable to making it perfect??

    Kibate
+M. Dovahkin Ehm, you completely missed the point of my sentence, which is why i even put "in america" in there. Of course there are more talented japanese actors in japan. And no one said only japan or only america are allowed to do movies, but not both together. Just see the ring movies

as it turns out, films AND anime don't care about the language of the setting, they care about the language of the audience. Code Geass and Phantom: Requiem of the Phantom both take place in environments where English should be the language (In Code Geass Britainia owns Japan and 2/3rds of the world, while in Phantom they're in America), but surprise they speak Japanese cause that's what media aims for, the language of the audience not the setting

+Iori Yagami actually there was a short batman anime(it was only 5 minutes or so) that was a retelling in ancient japan, and fans loved the shit out of that one. almost everything in akira has nothing to do with japanese culture, heck, only their names are pretty much the only japanese thing there. The entire premise, plot and characteristics have nothing to do with japan, the real tokyo or whatever. Let's take...the manga "Monster" for example, the story is centered mostly on germany, and there are SEVERAL plotpoints and character history that play an important part in that location, changing that would be wrong. It's different with Akira, changing tokyo to new york changes nothing.

Agreed. it would suck if they made it into an english film... Japan movie should stay in japan and only japanes can realise it to be a live action... for example, #gantz and #rurounikenshin

if the attack on titan movie can be completely Japanese cast, then akira can be completely American-speaking cast.

Not that they are any kind of specialists in movies, anime or anything i guess, but the WatchMojo.com channel just did a top 10 anime of all times and putted akira at number 1, theyr reason is because akira have lead to manga worldwide exposure, but for me is because i have not yet seeing an movie, anime or anything that made me see action/adventure/superpowers like akira did, when i saw akira all the superpower thing got awesome clear as a mayhem destruction nonsense cool and entertaining, it was like another continent of entertainment for me to hope see again, and it took alot of time for me to see anything like that again. It was only in the late 90's that things got more destruction wise in cartoons and movies like that. If you are not old like me, you are living in the age that you can see alot of things awesome like at any time, when i was growing up we had a lack of of cool destructions like that, we had lame Rambo at best.

The plot basically boils down to "hey what would happen if we just gave some random guy godlike powers that he has no idea how to control," but it's surprisingly deep as a character study/ social commentary. Plus the visuals are cool too, and that's the main thing.

If you see the movie, keep in mind that it doesn't explain anything, if you want to understand, read the mang, is really good.

+Noah Fence Only... They didn´t actually give him godlike powers for him because the didn´t know if him cud have it or not. Also, the old kids seems like under alot of control, at least thy think so. So... your argument is invalid, weak, not well formed, as someone that have not seeing the movie at all and ebola!

+Trent Trent Mamoru Oshii should give advise to Takashi Miike to make a live action remake. Miike is, excuse me, sick enough pull off a movie with the sickness level of Akira and Oshii with his Anime and Cyberpunk background could throw in a lot of good ideas and how to handle a live action remake.

Something that bigged me about the film: The General didnt die. He was the closest thing to a vilain there was in the film... although i guess failing and lvinf in shame is worse.

+Manu Rodz  He's not a villain per-say, just has different views than Kanneda. There really isn't a villain in the traditional sense, though Tetsuo is probably the closest.

    Stache
+Nubnut Yeah the general was definitely not the villain. It's not a black and white film. Even Tetsuo has his own emotional reasons though he is certainly corrupt. I wonder why Kaneda didn't try to reason with him much. Maybe that's just not his style though you'd think he would given they used to be close friends.
