For years, we've warned the US about fake news. The media ignored it, or worse, played along to legitimize those fake news. Now after this disastrous election cycle, they are FINALLY taking action against fake news.
However, I want to bring up an issue that I think is even WORST than fake news. Fake, spam comments. I know many of you guys are aware of the brigade put on by /r/the_donald, but are you aware that these people are everywhere on internet?
Even the facebook feed of my local NPR station, KQED is littered with Trumpers spreading misinformation and saying random bullshit. It's kind of crazy that they show up everywhere. They even infected Hillary Clinton's own facebook feed.
It's very weird and biased because you won't see the same kind of liberal spam on conservative channels. Not only have they created themselves an echo chamber, they are actively spreading their misinformation and lies to other places.
I want to raise this issue and want a good discussion on how we can prevent this. Obviously we want to uphold the value of free speech and allow them to say whatever they want, but how we can stop them from spamming every single news outlet with false information?
If the professional journalism outlets do not address this issue, this is going to be the next downfall of our democracy.
