Because, surprise surprise, they've always been a part of our society. It's a string inexplicably and insidiously woven into so many who are party to western society, and ultimately all it takes is someone to start plucking at it for this bullshit to start coming out.

Fascism was never defeated during the 20th century. It just rebranded. Think about how exactly most people think of nazism. It's basically Hitler's moustache fetishised into some kind of cartoon caricature, but we refuse to evaluate the fact that it's a done thing, a part of western culture that caused it to actually fucking happen. We decry jackboots and gas chambers but never think of the fact that any frustrated majority can be entirely capable of committing the exact same crimes. It became about aesthetics instead of ideology. Why? Because to fight the very fibre of our civilisation that sustains the possibility of these evils is to also fight the same thing that, like an abusive spouse, sustains their lives as well, and that's a terrifying prospect for many who have never learned that this is not the only possible reality for humanity.

And that's why now the only thing people seem to have trouble calling nazis are actual fucking nazis.
