The simple answer is automation. The hard answer is that the technologies requires for it are probably a ways off. In the capitalist mode of production, workers' creativity for innovation is stifled in the workplace and any energy that could be spent on technology that can automate their job is spent on the necessity of rest and relaxation that humans need.

Even if they did, they'd then lose their jobs and only method of survival within the system. Look at the current response by large corporations that threaten to replace service workers with machines if the minimum wage rises instead of cutting down on their own paychecks.

In the context of farming, we already have automated irrigation systems, then you'd program an automated tractor to till the field, plant seeds and then after a time, an automated harvester rolls out. Slowly but surely the entire process becomes automated, to the point where even the mechanic that has to fix the tractor every so often can leave his work to a repair drone or something like that.

Granted at this point it's science-fiction, but we also thought that long-distance face-to-face communication was science fiction as well (An example of this in fiction is in Heinlein's For Us, The Living, written in 1938). If we had more time to ourselves, and not worried about our next meal, rent, utilities, etc. we could come up with truly amazing stuff. Again, it's speculation, but it could see realization sooner than we think.
