Why have a wider censorship net than reddit itself? What gives?

Does the Ag-gag rule mean we ought make inferences about your relationship to the relevant industry?

/r/newreddits is not run by reddit, so, here's the answer: My conscience (which is why my wording in this mod post is emotional).

Does the Ag-gag rule mean we ought make inferences about your relationship to the relevant industry?

This isn't "Ag-gag", and I have no connection to the agricultural industry whatsoever, and this is not what the rule is about.

The rule came in place because someone thought it was a good idea to create and post a subreddit that tried to make entertainment out of animal cruelty. So no, if someone creates a subreddit that may feature animal cruelty as part of exposing cruelty to animals, that's not something I'm going to remove. This is one of the "you know it when you see it" things.

But even someone posting animal cruelty with the intention to be entertained by it (or entertain others by it) thereby exposes cruelty to animals. We are not slaves to the intentions of authors.

The subreddit I removed, and why this rule is now in place made light entertainment of dog's leaches getting stuck in elevator doors. It's not "Exposing cruelty to animals". It's finding a sick joy in watching someone's pet die under accidental circumstances, and it's not something I as moderator of this subreddit want to, even indirectly, be associated with.

If we are talking about real world footage of actual events it's necessarily exposing cruelty to animals when done for the purpose of entertainment. Far from being mutually exclusive the later is predicated on the former.

In censoring it you :

  • Potentially remove routes to criminal acts being discovered; and
  • More broadly, remove routes to the discovery of facts about the world, which other individuals are seeking to tap into.

You seem driven to create a sort of Orwellian memory hole. Far more disturbing than government disregard for freedom of speech is ease with which individuals will abandon it without prompting. You out yourself as such an individual.

Just. Stop. If you are unable to have a discussion without making accusations that are beyond absurd and idiotic, don't discuss at all.

There you go: trying order others into silence.

No. I'm signalling that I have no further intention to discuss this with you, because you're wasting my time, making arguments that have no actual real bearing on anything.

I supplied arguments, instead of engaging them you went all ostrich by shouting "absurd and idiotic".

[–]Arve[S] 0 ポイント1 ポイント  (0子コメント)

The argument is absurd and idiotic. This subreddit doesn't have a monopoly on what gets promoted or not. It doesn't hold a monopoly on promoting subreddits, nor does it get any extra favors from anyone.

It's not run by reddit, it's not run by the state. It's not run by the agricultural industry, or any other corporate entity. It's run by a private individual, solely because when Reddit got user-created subreddits, there was absolutely no discovery mechanisms.

Subreddits are like houses. They're run by someone, who, as long as they stay within the larger rules of society, get to set their own rules. In some cases, no invitation is needed to come visit, only that you behave within the house rules. The landlord gets to set those house rules. In that case, this is me because I want to be able to moderate this place without throwing up.

If you want a subreddit discovery mechanism that satisfies your personal conditions for what a subreddit should look like, create your own subreddit. As long as it satisfies the submission rules of this subreddit, you are even free to announce it.
