      To be fair, it looks like a pedestrian crossing, known in Britain as a Zebra crossing, common to Western Europe which is marked by thick white stripes parallel to the driving line. These give the pedestrian right of way and the driver "knows" to slow down and allow for pedestrians. This driver was both not looking for pedestrians, and speeding and therefore unable to stop.

      I'm inclined to agree with you, it's not fair to place all the blame on the mother. However, it was completely stupid to RUN across the street instead of walking up and alerting oncoming drivers to her presence. I see this all the time on these kinds of crossings in the Bay Area. Usually the pedestrians are smart enough to give the drivers time to react, although I have witnessed a few near misses.

      If she had walked, she would have got bowled! Drivers are meant to check for pedestrians. She's obviously used to idiots not following the rules. In the UK, drivers tend to be good about stopping for pedestrians. In places like Poland (in my experience) drivers completely ignore them.

          That one and the girl on the bike are pedestrian crossings. All cars should slow down and stop if there's someone waiting by the road or crossing there.

              This.....is some good advice right here.

              I have a spotless driving record but when I was younger I almost killed someone in that exact situation. I was driving in the left lane and a truck in the right lane slowed to a stop ahead of me at a crosswalk. I assumed they were turning right (it was an intersection) and the lady crossing the street didn't check traffic after she got in front of the truck.

              Was a near thing and one of the scariest moments of my life. Was crystal clear to me that my life could have changed in that moment.

              Anyway.....good advice.

              I almost got nailed by a car who didn't do that. I was 15 and had just got my first job. I couldn't drive yet so I was walking to work. A box truck came to a complete stop for me while I waited on the sidewalk at the crosswalk. After he stopped for me I started crossing and a car in the next lane came cruising by without stopping or slowing down, unable to see me behind the truck. She came so close to nailing me I could see the letters on her name badge clearly (she had obviously just left or was heading to work). It was a surreal experience to have someone come that close to hitting you with a car doing 35-45 mph (I don't know how fast she was going. The speed limit was 45, however she was approaching an intersection just past where the crosswalk was).

              About 6 months ago this happened to me but I was the white van in that gif and saw the car next to me not slowing down for pedestrians. My instinct was to just honk my horn so the car next to me would stop. After what seemed like an eternity honking my horn, what actually ended up happening was the people in front of my car stopped at my horn and the car next to me kept speed and flew by. Some people are just oblivious.

              Its outright illegal at least in Finland to not stop before the crosswalk if there's a vehicle stopped on the other lane. Its also outright illegal here not to let pedestrians cross the crosswalk if you see them trying to enter the crosswalk.

                  That red car was driving absolutely negligently though. Poor visibility on the crosswalk and he thinks to speed up through it? That would result in a multitude of tickets here.

                  The woman was trying to be cautious, you can see her looking to her left and gauging whether it was safe to go. She just didn't see the speed demon that wasn't paying attention to either the oncoming crosswalk or the slowing behavior of the truck to his right. I put that one 100% on the car.

                                        same, i was waiting in slow-moving lane, while the other was moving quite fast. A kid ran right in front of my car and i saw a car moving quickly in the other lane, I barely had to time to react shocked and mouth "stop" before the kid was hit and rolled over the hood of the car, which thankfully had slowed down a little. I saw the kid get back up and staggered away, seemingly fine, but i couldnt move from my car due to being boxed in. However, his 2 friends ran after him straight afterwards, almost getting hit by a 2nd car in the process (managed to press the horn in react to that, which stopped them and the other car approaching).

                                          My sister (around 10 at the time I guess) one time came out from the dentist and walked straight over the street without watching. Luckily the car driver who came hit the brakes in time. I wouldn't consider my sister as stupid, she just somehow wasn't concentrated on her surroundings in that moment.                                           I once was running with headphones on and really tired and out of it and some guy across the street asked me a question and I went to step right into the street and a split second before I did, a big truck came roaring by. I think of that sometimes and just pure luck that my life didn't end at that moment. And I am generally not that dumb but was a dumb teenager at the time I guess and worn out from my exercise and brain wasn't at 100%.

He was clipped by a passing car and broke his leg. He didnt like being in the road so he always ran across the street. He was so lucky, a few more inches I'm sure he would have been killed

                                                        Saw a kid die like this last year right at the entrance to my complex. He ran out into the street from the front of the bus and got hit at 45mph. Sucks, but it was no one's fault but his for not thinking of oncoming traffic.

                                                        I was that dumb 13 year old kid before. Rode my bike out in front of a truck who would have never been able to see me. Hit me going about 20 mph. Just a few broken bones and a pretty massive concussion. He wrote me a note apologizing. I always hope he didn't feel bad. Was completely my fault.

                                                        My dad hit a little kid who ran out on the street to fetch his ball. My dad was scared out of his mind thinking that he hurt the little boy so he gets out the car to see he is ok. Just as he's checking that boy was ok, his dad runs out and screams "AGAIN?!" Apparently it wasn't the first time he runs out into the street and had gotten hit. The man apologized to my dad and he went on his way. They really were doing a shit job at being parents.

                                                                Something similar happened to my friend. We were walking out of our college building and it was being renovated. I was behind him say only 1 or 2 seconds late. So, instead of walking out of the gate he waited for me and when I reached him a drill machine dropped down vertically (yeah it's bit was pointing downwards) just in front of gate. It would have been fatal if he didn't waited for me.

                                                                You guys, don't sprint across the street after exiting a bus. I almost hit a guy who did something similar.

                                                                I was in the middle of a poorly lit intersection waiting for cross traffic to pass so I could make a left. I check the crosswalk, clear. I check the cross traffic as the final oncoming car passes, theres an approaching car with superbrights shining in my eyes from 40 yards away, so im clear. Theres a bus sitting on the corner of where id be making my left. I check the crosswalk and oncoming car again in quick succession, clear except the d bag with the superbrights has clearly floored it to make the light. I can still safely turn, but now ive got to give it a little gas. Im about 85 degrees into my 90 degree turn, front bumper has just crossed the first line of the crosswalk when I register that something has just passed my front passenger side headlight. Thinking is was a box or some other debris I slam on my brakes. In the same moment I begin to decellerate, I see a pair of legs cross in front of my other headlight.

                                                                This kid did exactly what gif kid did, zip around the back of a bus to cross a street without looking. Sure, mine was in a crosswalk and had a green light, was legally allowed to cross, but im not sure how much comfort thatd give him while he lie broken and twisted on the asphalt.
