I graduated from college and then joined a plumbing, pipefitting, and welding union. Didn't feel like going to grad school. You can make pretty good money learning a trade. My union starts us off at $19 an hour, after we earn a certain amount of hours, we get a $2 raise. By the time we are fifth year apprentices we are making over $30. Journeyman plumbers make $42 an hour, and welders make $47. And we also get 2 pensions, 401k, and benefits. If the union that you join doesn't have a lot of work, you will sit for a while. The trades can be stable for some people, but not everyone is going to experience that.
