Don't worry, coral will be extinct in less than 100 years.

You can thank CO2 and CH4 for that

Cows

That's no way to talk about OP's mom douche bag.

Have you seen her? Or does she leave the bag on?

Cows can't swim that deep so the coral should be ok.

But no no, steak is too important apparently...

This is why in addition to changing personal habits and investing in green technology everyone should avoid eating beef and go vegetarian multiple days a week.

Start with 1 day going vegetarian and you'll find it's easy and tasty.

people can afford beef every night?

Welcome to 'Murica - the land of subsides cheap corn beef

Who the fuck can't?

I eat burgers, steak, spaghetti, mince pies, some kinda beef every night, same with everyone I know

RIP your colon and big toe.

Do you like, eat fish'n'beef, parmibeefia chicken, cocobeef shrimps? I eat meat everyday, but the thought of eating beef for every dinner (and it being the norm) is very weird to me. There are other interesting animals to eat.

Honestly it's pretty insane and a bit disgusting how much meat Americans eat. It's absolutely through the roof. The US has the highest meat consumption in the world with more than twice as much as most countries.

I'm happy Asian cultures tend to be more on the vegetarian side or else we would probably be fucked by now as a human collective. Imagine India and China with those stats...

I'm really hoping lab grown beef works out.

There are options between "All out beef" and "All out vegetarian" (poultry, fish, lamb, etc.)

It's not even cows though, cows are a fraction of other anthropogenically caused carbon emissions.

Soft corals like this Toadstool may just adapt. They're not as reliant on dissolved calcium and alkalinity since they don't need to build a skeleton to support themselves. Also, toadstool corals are extremely prolific in captivity and it's unlikely that they'll ever go extinct as long as humans are keeping saltwater aquariums.

They are still dependent on stable pH and with more CO2 there is an increased amount of acidity in the ocean.

Oh without a doubt, I didn't mean to make it sound like they're safe, or even close to it as far as the wild is concerned. But if any coral can adapt to low PH it will almost certainly be soft corals like these.

Leather corals are less demanding and more tolerant to a degree. I have been scuba diving all over the Bahamas and parts of the Caribbean for years and have seen multiple problems killing corals. Ocean acidification, increased fertilizer use, reduction of plant life on land eroding soils into the ocean, development, and even the amount of sunscreen on tourists causing a film that smothers coral. Any one of these could be overcome but the real problems are when there are too many and the corals cannot recover. In my opinion the reefs are doomed to political inaction and like hundreds of thousands other species before them they are doomed by the ignorance of a small number of people who directly benefit from behavior that kills the planet.

Thats great to hear actually. I love the ocean and that comment was typed out in a sad voice in my head.

Thus begins my research into soft corals, thanks man!

Everybody is the same person.

I'd like to be the obligatory "Not a real phobia but just a natural reaction humans have to things that look parasitic" comment

I'd like to be the, "why is this one not real but arachnophobia is perfectly fine, or why doesn't specific phobia not cover this" comment then.

Seriously, you can have a fear of sharks, bears, death...lots of natural things to fear.

Not a psychologist, but I think it's only a phobia if it's debilitating or completely irrational or something. Like seeing a spider and feeling "ugh, spider" or flinching when one gets near you isn't arachnophobia, arachnophobia is when you see a spider and hyperventilate or become paralyzed, and seeing a picture of a spider online is enough to cause an anxiety attack.

So I'd say that trypophobia isn't like seeing a picture of maggot infested meat with a bunch of gross holes in it and thinking, "ew, gross"; trypophobia would be more like being physically unable to touch a kitchen sponge due to overwhelming irrational fear.

What if a tiny bit of pee comes out but otherwise you're ok?

3 drips max. Anything more a single squeak toot also signifies a phobia.

Squeak Toot is a good band name if the lead plays a pan flute by farting

And when you have a phobia, you actively do things that are done to avoid the thing. So, if you're afraid of spiders, you go out of your way not to be where they are. Depending on the phobia, it can really fuck you up.

While I totally agree with you, it always irks me that people claim it "isn't a real phobia" because I do have a debilitating and irrational reaction to things like that. I couldn't calm down for 20 minutes after seeing a picture of a lotus pod (crying, hyperventilating, the works). To me, and I'm sure to a lot of people, it is a real phobia.

How well/poorly have you been dealing with this coral bloom?

I closed it at lightning speed, barely saw it, but I did get up and pace a little bit while focusing on my breathing (& scratching at my arms).

I might be a different sort of case, though. I already have some pretty severe issues with anxiety, so that (and not the phobia itself) could be the cause of my reactions.

This gif is probably worse than you think.

I can see how these things make people uncomfortable, but I'm usually okay with them. However, this damn video just kept going... And growing.

Fuck. I regret being curious enough to google what lotus pod is. The name doesn't even sound as bad as it looks.

I get anxious around walls with texture of holes in tight formation. I get instant wish to get away from certain household items. I freaked out my girlfriend by freaking out over a patch of her skin having an indentation from the clothes she was wearing.

I've seen much milder reactions from people with different phobias. There are many items I will not go near and will refuse to use. It might not be a phobia but sure as fuck I experience very phobia-like symptoms.

so how come i dont have that reaction at all?

You're assuming people who have the reaction have a phobia. They don't, they just feel like it's icky.

For instance, some people can handle spiders, some people are kind of scared of them. Neither of those people have arachnophobia either. Arachnophobes would pretty much die at the sight of a spider, trypophobes would drop dead at the sight of a kitchen sponge and so far that's never been recorded as happening.

Yea i dont get it either

If it's any consolation, this is how coral eats, kind of. Coral is composed of two elements: the polyp, which is related to jellyfish and resembles a sea anemone, and the symbiotic algae that live in the polyps' body and arms, called the zooxanthellae.

The zooxanthellae, being photosynthetic, absorb sunlight and convert it into sugar and give it to the polyp. The polyp in turn filter feeds food from the water using its tiny tentacles and gives the nutrients to the algae.

In this GIF, the individual polyps stick their bodies out at night to begin snatching food particles that float by. A single colony of coral consists of many small polyps anchored in a chalk base/skeleton that holds them next to each other, covered in a layer of soft tissue. The combined skeletons made of chalk is all that is left when a colony dies, which is the coral that most people find washed up on the sea shore.

I also forgot to mention that it's territorial, and if two colonies grow too close, they will begin secreting digestive juices and ejecting their stomachs to war with the enemy colony, attempting to digest its enemy alive!

Yeah it's pretty easy to remember. Its my birth month multipled to the power of the number of cousins i have, then multipled by the population of the town i was born in, plus the number of planets in the milkyway. I then added 5 digits to the front based on the square root of my height in microinches and took away the speed of sound in water.

Are they related to Xenias? I we had some pink grabby corals kind of like that growing up but the base was less defined and they couldn't retract like that...

They're both soft corals but look pretty different. Xenias grow as a lot of fairly large individual polyps. Toadstools have a lot of tiny polyps all attached to a single mushroom shaped base. Neither has a hard skeleton though.
