Basically have you ever played a game so good that it made others in the genre seem boring or stale?
I've been thinking about this because of the recent influx of some really good multiplayer FPS titles. Games like Titanfall 2, Battlefield 1 and Overwatch are all critically acclaimed and regarded as being fantastic multiplayer shooters. However, I've found myself thinking the same thing whilst playing each one: "I wish I was playing Halo 5". I can see that they're games I'd really enjoy if it weren't for the fact that I've already played H5. However, whilst playing I can't help but compare them to Halo, none of them give me that same level of satisfaction in getting a kill. Because of this Halo 5 has effectively ruined multiplayer FPS games for me, they all just feel boring in comparison. I've actually avoided picking up the newer titles because I know I'll just come back to Halo.
So I'm wondering, has anyone else experienced this feeling before and for what games/genres? What about that game made it so much better to you?
Bonus question: Has there been a game which has surpassed it?
The Steam equivalent of the drunk friend who keeps offering to pay your tab all night.

no. I judge games on their own merits, even sequels.
Im also a big fan of change in general, so even if it turns out bad, I just shrug and go "well, it is what it is" instead of "it should have been like the 5 before it!"

Took me awhile to play another non-Mario game after Mario Galaxy.
Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends sat for years.

Xenogears ruined JRPG stories for years for me. Even now I need to hold games to a different standard because nothing compares.
Dota 2 has ruined other mobas for me
Except Vainglory

Witcher 3.
Older puzzle games really pale in comparison to some of the ones in the last couple years.
Most TPS games feel pretty clunky after the Phantom Pain - I don't know if I'd say ruined, but I'm more aware of short-comings.
Bloodborne ruined multiple genres for me
this. and to be honest, the melee combat of witcher 3 has ruined melee combat for me in any other game. I always find myself playing the game just to cut through some bandits. I 100% believe it has the best action combat in a western RPG... nothing else comes close. if we are talking jrpg, then you have games like KH: BBS and the soul's games.Originally Posted by Permanently A

also, any game that tries to do stealth action after MGSV.

The Last of Us made ruined cinematic, story driven games for me.
Finally bought a new PSP, but then pushed the demon onto someone else. Jesus.

Vanquish (Platinum Games), from a player control standpoint. No TPS compares.
Counter-Strike basically ruined all modern realistic FPS games for me outside large scale games like a Battlefield. Between the original beta, CSS and CSGO i have been playing it for 16-17 years and it still feels as fresh and amazing as the first day i played it.
Overwatch has the same effect as Counter-Strike in that i can't even go back to TF2, it's perfected the hero shooter genre.

Top Spin 4 was so good that modern Virtua Tennis turned blergh.
Vanquish, any other TPS or FPS single player is boring as fuck in comparison
And every time I play a TPS I think about how I would rather be playing RE4 or Vanquish. Mikami is a genius

Bloodborne. Combat never feels the same for me anymore on other games.
ICO and Shadow of the Colossus deadass ruined Zelda for me. Never looked at it the same way again.
I probably would have found more enjoyment in The Elder Scrolls Online and Fallout 4 if not for The Witcher III
Yeah, Witcher 3 really made badly designed open world games and their sidequests pretty tough to enjoy.
Bloodborne for sure. Several genres.
Nothing completely. Virtua Fighter 4 and 5 Quest modes along with it's decent AI did raise my standards for quality single player fighting options that no one's really matched even since. I still get by playing newer titkes with basic Arcade modes (unless your SFV and dont even have that) but I just can't help wish it became a standard rather then a one off.
No and for God's sake please when this happens to me I will have truly lost my soul to the devil so you can kill me then and there or risk my becoming of a demon so evil I will destroy all goty games ever made.
Not "a" game, but in terms of game series, it's really difficult for me to enjoy platformers that aren't Mario or adventure games that aren't Zelda.
I mean, I can still enjoy them and think they're great. But I can't think of any that have made me think they're better than games from those series.

Not forever, but definitely for long stretches.
Resident Evil 4 set a precedent for third-person action games I didn't feel was dethroned until Uncharted 2, for example.
But I still haven't completely come out of the shadow of Last of Us and Bloodborne. It's hard to enjoy other games at all now.

any third person action game is booty after Souls.
funny this comes up because i just logged out of Rise of the Tomb raider because i kept trying to roll away from the enemies

Oh absolutely. MGSV has the most flawless, addictive stealth gameplay ever made.this. and to be honest, the melee combat of witcher 3 has ruined melee combat for me in any other game. Souls series ruined melee combat in every other game
There are features and atmospheric touches in Sleeping Dogs that still make other open-world games feel antiquated to me. Something as simple as tying L3 to a cycle through all available mission points, it's such an obvious improvement on a major irritation - and nobody else has touched it. So few games try to immerse players in foreign cultures, or replicate real-world locations outside of a few safe zones.
Additionally, Hitman has ruined countless other games for me. Playing through Dishonored 2 and realizing each target only has one scripted execution plan.. it seems like a tremendous wasted opportunity. Hitman made me question why game design is willing to settle for a single resolution to missions.

It looks like RE 4 is going to kill survival horror for me. Already I'm starting to see how oversensitive Dead Space's controls are.
A case can be made that WoW has objectively ruined the MMO genre because all anyone has tried to do since is copy it.
Xenoblade Chronicles X ruined open world games for me.
