I have tried my hardest to get into 3DS hacking, and I have to say I have never had a harder time tolerating any homebrew community. No help, no support, aside from one thread you quarantine people into. Not a single person has been able to give a direct answer to several common questions, such as blocking Nintendo updates without the use of third-party business softwear, and an obnoxious obsession with using lingo, regardless of the fact that this community is too remote for anyone to care about learning what you people are referring to ahead of time (yet, the thread asking about the Circle Pad Pro is confusing). It's like a GameFAQs answer thread.

I hope you get your act together, or get ruined by whatever Nintendo chooses to do to you now that they use the internet more freely. Nintendo banning dumbasses for using leaked copies of Sun and Moon was a great step.

PS: Feel free to ban me like a bunch of little crybabies for not giving your sub more bland, safe posts.

First of all, I'm sorry to hear you're dissatisfied with /r/3dshacks. Note that this post is my personal stance on your critique; I'm not speaking for the entire moderation team here.

No help, no support, aside from one thread you quarantine people into.

The subreddit would become, effectively, support valley if we did not keep a thread dedicated to questions. This would just lead to less people participating in the subreddit -- people who are here for news and developments would have an awful time.

In a survey from about five months ago, a vast majority of people agreed with the notion of a Q&A thread, yet support for a dedicated subreddit for questions was mostly thrown out by the community. As such, I see no reason to change the current system.

We do, however, have a help vampire problem, there's no real solution. I can't make the guides containing answers to fairly frequent questions any more prevalent.

I see no Q&A question at a glance about that. Was there a specific instance where someone said "use specific commercial software X"? Basically, it should just boil down to do a DNS block for the update servers using whatever your current infra is -- router settings; if you run a DNS server yourself, just override it there; and so on. I don't know the exact domains, but I do believe that doing some research yourself is part of the process.

The 3DS scene, like any other scene, develops terms to refer to specific things. How would you refer to arm9loaderhax without calling it arm9loaderhax?

Plailect's guide tries to abstract away most of the technical things into a series of steps where you don't really have to understand much of what you're doing, at least.

I blame OP assuming "CPP" doesn't mean "C++" or "C preprocessor" and that everyone would get the idea it's Circle Pad Pro. That said, nobody has even answered there, which is hardly surprising, given that /r/3dshacks is just not very into hardware. However, if nobody has answered, how can it be confusing to you already?

Anyways, I'd like to say that I found this community extremely helpful and well receiving. The "one thread you quarantine people into" has helped me on more than one occasion, and when it doesn't I just go to gbatemp. If you're easily upset by not being able to understand lingo, just google it, thats what most of us did.

P.S I also enjoyed how you didn't have the guts to post this on your main reddit account, and had to make a throwaway just to do it ;) Can't lose that precious Karma.

Actually you're right on the GBATemp thing, I didn't get an answer for a recent issue I've caused to myself here, but the GBATemp people were most helpful. People have more than one option, if it's not GBATemp, then here, and vice versa, really showing how there is help out there, not really any dicks here about it. Moreso on GBATemp, but that's another story.

Not exactly. You can effectively shadowban someone from a subreddit by making Automoderator delete any posts from them, but it's not a "true shadowban."

The community has been rather helpful in my (short) experience. However, coming from the PSP scene where everything was relatively clear-cut, the lingo is a pita to get around. I'm gathering that that's due to the nature of the ds's history.

Basically, nobody ever released a consolidated be-all-end-all solution, so people just kept building more historical cruft on top of each other for compatibility reasons and the like.

I think SALT was trying to avoid that with the Wii U, but then the RedNAND dam broke early and now they're heading into a similar mess over there.

I've seen some large companies with real paid customer support, (funded by our purchases) with far much less documentation, and helpful guides than the 3ds hacking scene.

You gotta keep something in mind. There are a LOT of people here. Most questions you probably ask, have been answered NUMEROUS times before. Ctrl+f goes a long way.

Came to sub, opened side bar, hacked 2 3ds's and downgraded from 11.2 with no issues ever. Seen a lot of people's posts answered and a lot of comments answered in the support thread.

This sub is easier to find info on than GBAtemp, at least to me.

The sidebar helps, and really should be read for every sub you use.

I've found this community to be absolutely nothing but helpful. Then again, I was able to follow the guide and get myself set up fairly well without much help needed.

I can see where being too simple-minded to be able to follow simple well written instructions would be a challenge though. You should realize that that's YOUR problem and no fault of this community however.

I've only one comment (everyone else addressed the other points). Anyone who plays a game before the release date is asking for it. It happens everywhere else too. The exceptions, of course, are those authorized to do so like reviewers that get review copies.

Dont forget, even the review units are given with explicit instructions to not use the online features. The people who went online before the release date-- whether it was a legit copy that broke street date, or a pirated one--were just asking to be banned.

Meh. I've been (mostly lurking) on this subreddit for a while and so far I've had the exactly opposite experience. This community has been pretty helpful and dedicated, and "quarantining" all common questions into a single thread is good, or else this subreddit would become nothing but common support questions. This way, instead, one can find or ask newbie questions in a single thread and get all the news on their front page, which is way better.

If you took some time to read the rules you'd know that banning people who played the leaked version of Sun/Moon wouldn't change a thing for this subreddit due to rule 3. We're discussing homebrew here - not piracy - and saying that you got the game early was pretty much openly admitting to piracy (sure, some people got the actual cart early due to their store breaking day one, but they only got it one or two days before the release day. Most people that got banned, howerer, played the leaked version around a week before day one, which is a whole different story.)

I came into the Homebrew world just as newbie as anyone else and I figured things out by educating myself on the terms and using the search function of sites like GBATemp and r/3dshacks. I've only bothered making posts or asking for help in chats when searching didn't yield me relevant results. If you don't understand enough about using the internet that you can't spend 5-10 minutes on Google and find a solution, you really shouldn't be hacking consoles.

I came here knowing nothing of the 3ds in the aim to buy and hack a 3ds. I must admit at first glance there was a lot to be learned. I spent time studying the tutorial here and learning the lingo (google was very helpful). And the things I couldn't find on google I asked here and received helpful replies. I see no problem with this community.

Add my two cents here. I had maybe three questions that the guide hadn't covered or I was possibly just being obtuse that day. You all were quick and helpful and I had basically a painless al9h install. This is the homebrew scene that has their shit together the most of any I've seen outside the PSP, though I haven't seen many, admittedly.

Eh, aside from the sub being kind of confusing and hard to find specific info I'm not finding it to bad. I'm still hunting around for the method I heard about that would let me use PKHEX on 11.2 on a non hacked system that doesn't currently have homebrew installed (I hear it is possible but every method I find, such as the JKSaveManager one, involves homebrew at some point which I can't do).

Really though the whole "hacking 3DS thing" is a bit of a mess when you look outside of this sub, a lot of other places expect you to miraculously know what you are doing :/ (JKSaves is a.CIA whatever that is...so I had to find out how to install a .CIA first which led me to something called NASA so I had to find out how to installed that and I found FBI and...you get the idea) Doesn't help that I find Github to be one of the most useless and annoying sites to find info on. Probably cos I'm not used to it and not completely confident in how to explore the maze of info it seems to have.

I've found the opposite - this subreddit is actually the reason I got into using Reddit itself. I'm now subbed to about 20 different subreddits and it's all because of how helpful and friendly I've found 3dshacks.

I've had a little trouble with asking questions myself, so I used the 3dshacks discord channel, and it helped me massively. The people there are very kind and helpful. Not that the community here on reddit isn't, it's just easier when you're having an actual conversation with someone.

This site doesn't represent the community. The actual community is at two specific forums which I can't link because the moderator bot automatically deletes any mention of these forums as piracy. Use this site as a news outlet, not a support site.

Just last night I hacked my 6th 3DS console in 3 weeks and I was starting with absolutely zero knowledge of anything. Seek out the forums I mentioned because those contributors were fantastic and I could have never achieved the results I did without their help and support.

Thanks to this community, a vast majority of YouTube videos, and hours of research I did on my own. I was able to do numerous things with my 3ds that i would of never thought to do otherwise. (Wont go into detail) I have found this community to be just peachy. The Q/A + People have answered everything I needed to know. Sorry op had a bad experience, but don't dismiss a while community for not holding your hand. Sorry not sorry : )
